Qatar, a major supporter of rebels in Syria’s civil war, suggested it could intervene militarily following Russia’s intervention in support of President Bashar al-Assad but said it still preferred a political solution to the crisis.

The comments by Qatar’s foreign minister, made in a CNN interview on Wednesday, drew a swift reply from Assad’s government with a senior official warning that Damascus would respond harshly to such “direct aggression”.

Gulf Arab backers of Syrian rebels such as Qatar have been unsettled by Russia’s three-week-old air strike campaign that has allowed Assad’s forces to wrest back some territory to help secure his strongholds in western Syria.

Qatar has been a leading supporter of anti-Assad rebel groups, providing arms and financial and political backing.

Asked by CNN if Qatar supported the Saudi position that does not rule out a military option in Syria as a result of Russia’s intervention, Foreign Minister Khalid al-Attiyah said: “Anything that protects the Syrian people and Syria from partition, we will not spare any effort to carry it out with our Saudi and Turkish brothers, no matter what this is.

“If a military intervention will protect the Syrian people from the brutality of the regime, we will do it,” he added, according to a text in Arabic carried by Qatar’s state news agency QNA.

His comments were also carried on CNN’s Arabic website.

In response, Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad was quoted by Lebanon-based al-Mayadeen television as saying: “If Qatar carries out its threat to militarily intervene in Syria, then we will consider this a direct aggression ... Our response will be very harsh.”

Attiyah also said Qatar preferred to solve regional crises through direct political dialogue.

“We do not fear any confrontation, and thus we will call for dialogue from a position of strength because we believe in peace and the shortest path to peace is through direct dialogue.”

Qatar is a small but wealthy gas exporter that played a major role in supporting Islamist opposition groups during Arab Spring uprisings in 2011 in Libya and Syria.

For Turkish posters; :D

Qatari Army has 8500 military personnel..... Nusra has 10750 militants. I think Qatari Forces would be wiped out by ISIS before they can confront SAA.

qatari military was a major terrorist in nato's libya campaign.

let's see now, qatari military on one side vs syrian military, russian military and aliies on the other.

Qatar has as it stands like 8000 soldiers and 14 Mirages? Why was this threat even taken seriously?

To be honest, Qatar has the manpower and equipment to cause serious damage to Assad and his friends. Couple of Russian tanks and Russian jets won't be much if Qatar provides key equipment to the Syrian rebels. Personally I think it would be a good development since the Russians are working together with ISIS to destroy the Syrian rebels. Russia just set food in Afghanistan 2.0. They are always chosing the wrong side. Unfortunately for Russia the majority of Syrians are not pro-Assad. They made the wrong calculation... again.

remember, qatari military generally went to libya within a alliance of 40+ nato militaries and that too after their qaeda/taliban/ikhwaan etc friends had softened-up the place, though yes, some qatari commanders operated with the terrorists long before nato planes and rockets landed.

when will we see you in syria??

since the Russians are working together with ISIS to destroy the Syrian rebels.

Russia just set food in Afghanistan 2.0.

yeah, russia set food to attract the rats and then exterminate them.

Unfortunately for Russia the majority of Syrians are not pro-Assad.

no doubt the syrians told you that.

Syrian war front is getting bigger and more messy with every passing day

Oh great that's exactly what Syria needed. Another country with it's military force entering the country under the pretext of peace.

Iran and Russia are supporting their friend assad which means that Russia will make sure that Assad stays in power which means that if Qatar intervenes militarily with its entire 8000 army then Russia and iran will arm Assad's forces and Russia may even run sorties against Qatar's bases in Syria.

Anyway this is basically a more talk than walk. Qatar does not have the military strength to launch such a strong operation. They will however strengthen their support for the Syrian rebels since Assad's army is starting to fight back with Russian support.

Syria has become a mess with various factions fighting amongst each other whilst being supported by their masters...
