Pakistan Navy has had the VTOL UAV requirement since 1997! At that time only Boeing had an experimental platform. However in present day and age longer range, smaller fixed wing UAV (like the Scan Eagle) can do a better job from a ship compared to a VTOL. Bureaucrats at the NHQ need to upgrade their in-house operational requirements keeping in view matured UAV technologies available around the world, rather invest the same money in developing the capable UAV technology inside Pakistan.

Successful maiden flight of MUSECO VTOL UAV with combat proven Ground Control Station

April 08, 2010

In a joint effort Swiss UAV and EMT Penzberg successfully flew the first fully automated mission on the combat proven EMT LUNA Ground Control Station with its MUSECO VTOL UAV.

The flights are the result of joint integration efforts during the last months by Swiss UAV and EMT Penzberg, an aviation expert and supplier of the LUNA unmanned system to the German Armed Forces. The vertical takeoff and landing capabilities of the NEO S-300 are now part of the LUNA fixed-wing unmanned system family. MUSECO is a combination of Swiss UAV's NEO S-300 air vehicle with its vertical take-off and landing capability and parts of the LUNA UAV avionics, e.g. data link and electro optical day and night sensors. MUSECO is an abbreviation for Multi Sensor Copter.

During the flights MUSECO was controlled through the combat proven LUNA Ground Control Station and fully integrated the LUNA Command & Control communications links. The system demonstrated an automatic waypoint flight and in-flight deviations due to mission changes during its maiden flight. It submitted online crisp-clear LUNA payload images at all times.

An excellent article by ARMADA INTERNATIONAL on VTOL's. Look at page 32

http://www.armada.ch/Flip/issue6_2010/pageflip.html

It seems that the French Navy, the first interested user of VTOL's from Frigates, is now looking beyond 2012 to induct the platform. Also, currently most of the VTOL's tested are of Jet Fuel version which is difficult & highly & dangerously inflammable to carry on board a frigate. Looks like everyone is waiting for a diesel engine version in VTOL. So the experimentation on Maritime VTOL continues!

Interestingly! One of the stipulated tender conditions by the Navy is as follows.

CUSTOMER BASE
The Seller is to provide a list of main customers to whom such range of equipment was sold/supplied during last ten years. At-least 10 units of proposed system shall be in use with different customers and supplier should provide a reference list.

The supplier shall furnish, along with the offer, a certificate of satisfaction from at least one of the reputable customers preferably from Navy. The certificate should clearly indicate the in-service quality/reliability of equipment against the specifications.

None of the offered UAV's are fully compliant to this criteria!

The required Technical Specifications are as follows.

MAIN CHARACTERISTICS

Main characteristics should include:

Maximum Speed > 60 kts
Endurance 5-6 hours(essential)
Range 40 NM or more.
Payload 50 Kgs or more.
Operating temperature -40 to +55 deg C
Guidance Autonomous/manual and way point navigation.
Launch/recover Fully autonomous.

Ive got a few in mind that might just be perfect for the Pakistan Navy... so who do I contact?

Singapore Airshow: China Promoting New VTOL UAV - Defense News

Singapore - China is promoting exports of a new vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) at the 2010 Singapore Airshow.

China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) provided brochures for the first time on the U8E VTOL UAV.

CATIC did not exhibit a model or the actual aircraft, but was more than willing to provide new data on a platform that has remained a mystery to many analysts.

The U8E is a light multi-role UAV with some impressive specifications:

■ Maximum takeoff weight of 220 kg

■ Maximum speed of 150km/hour

■ Cruise speed of 120 km/h

■ Ceiling of 3,500 m

■ Range of 150 km

■ Maximum Endurance of four hours

■ Maximum Payload of 40 kg

"With EO [electro-optical] and multi-function payload, U8E can play a very important role both in civil and military operations. Using U8E is the best solution for surveillance operations and anti-terrorism action," said a CATIC press release.

The aircraft has a helicopter configuration with a wingspan of 3.86 meters, fuselage width of 1 meter, length at 3.738 meters and a height of 1.47 meters.

CATIC also showed off a model of ASN-209 tactical UAV system. The 209 is a medium altitude and medium endurance (MAME) multi-role fixed wing aircraft with systems that include a direct line-of-sight (LOS) data link, UAV airborne data relay used for beyond LOS missions and a ground-based data relay for beyond LOS missions. It can be fitted with a synthetic aperture radar, EO payload and multi-function payload.

The 209 mission capabilities include a 200 km range, 180 km/h maximum speed, 50 kg payload and a 5,000 meter operational ceiling. Configurations include ground moving target indication (GMTI), electronic intelligence, electronic warfare, ground target designation (GTD) and communications relay.

What is your email address? Message it to me.

I don't wanna give my email address away on here, is there any other way? and who should I talk to about the VTOL UAVs that fit Pak Navy requirements.

I guess u should go to the PN official website or contact their official spokesperson...:coffee:

Indian Navy Commissions Second UAV Squadron at Porbander, Gujarat | India Defence

Indian Navy Commissions Second UAV Squadron at Porbander, Gujarat
2011-01-17

The second Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) squadron of the Indian Navy was commissioned by Gujarat Governor Dr Kamla at Porbander Naval base. The squadron whose primary objective is to carry out maritime surveys and reconnaissance, will have two types of UAVs which include Israeli-made Searcher and Heron.

The commissioning of Navy squadron in Porbander becomes important as the coastal town has a proximity with Pakistan. Porbander also houses a naval base and a airstrip. Indian Navy is amongst the few elite forces in the world to have deployed such squadrons for maritime surveillance.

"Each UAV will carry a payload in the form of radar, cameras, communication and intelligence equipments, based on the nature of the Aerial survey that is to be carried out across the coast of Gujarat," a Naval spokesperson told reporters.

When the UAV is airborne it would be controlled by controller sitting on the shore, he said, adding that all the data including pictures, sounds, audio and others would be relayed directly to the shore where the control panel is located.

Based on the data sent by the UAV, the Navy would react after analyzing the sensitivity of the matter, he added.

Indians are using reliable platforms (fixed wing long range) while we are uselessly dabbling in inducting untested VTOL platforms!!!

PN is so lazy when it comes to deals ,we saw U-214 deal resulting into lingering issue,no submarine has decided yet even after years , now since how long we are listening about VTOL UAV's still nothing materialized .they have to keep in mind the pace with which IN is moving on ,though we can't match their budget but still we should go for the things we need as soon as possible like Subs and UAV's etc

Not only lazy but they also have a funding problem. Last year NHQ got the lion's share of funds to purchase major items for a value of up to US$70 million!! Therefore and keeping in view the severe shortage of funding, its highly unlikely that purchase of a UAV system and especially VTOL will go through. They will again end up buying the UQAB Fixed Wing UAV from NDC for something around US$3 million or so!! The VTOL UAV system, keeping in view the PN requirement and conditions of the tender, will not be less than US$10-12 million!!!

Do note that Pakistan Army has already rejected the VTOL UAV's and is going to buy the UQAB UAV and Shahpar UAV (both fixed wings) made locally by NDC and PAC this year!
