Pakistan Navy has floated tenders to international companies for invitation of bids for both VTOL Shipborne and Fixed Wing Long Endurance UAV's. A total of 4 UAV's with 4 ground control stations for each type has been invited. Navy has already trialed & evaluated Camcopter S-100, APID and Falco UAV systems in the past. Naval HQ had purchased the locally made Uqab Fixed Wing UAV System from GIDS last year for US$3 million! The tender is scheduled to be opened by the Directorate of Purchase (Navy) on 22 November 2010. Navy has budgeted around US$10 million for the VTOL and around US$5 million for the fixed wing UAV types.

However & according to the current financial crunch in Pakistan, it is highly unlikely that the budget allocation for these purchases will be approved by the Ministry of Defense!

S-100 Produced by the Austrian company Schiebel, it was developed from 2003 to 2005. With a maximum take-off weight (MTOW) of 200 kilograms (440 lb), its endurance is 6 hours. It has a maximum speed of 220 kilometres per hour (140 mph) and a ceiling of 18,000 feet (5,500 m). It is powered by a 55 horsepower Diamond engine and can carry various payloads, such as electro-optics and infrared sensors.

The launch customer for the S-100 was the UAE Army, which ordered 40 aircraft with an option for 40 more. The aircraft was ordered by three more undisclosed nations, with total orders reaching 200.

Recently,[when?] the Pakistan Navy tested the Camcopter S-100 from one of its ships in the Arabian Sea, followed by the French Navy on October 9–10, 2008, while the Montcalm destroyer was in movement.
The German Navy has ordered a first batch of 6 modified Camcopter S-100 with improved sensors for the use on the Braunschweig class corvettes. Also the German Army plans to purchase the Camcopter S-100 for land-based missions

The camcopter episode took place nearly 2 years ago..
There was an indigenous offer for a locally built system.. and the navy had an in house program as well.. but both lacked loiter time and very little useful payload.

VTOL's have a serious drawback. They have too many moving parts in-flight therefore very high chances of breakdowns in a tough environment such as that of the Arabian Sea! The APID UAV had crashed during Pakistan Navy trials in 2008 because of this very reason. Also you need to have high level of educated trainees to operate a VTOL system, which essentially PN lacks!

Fixed wing UAV's glide ability and piston engine with small propellers give them higher endurance and lower attrition rates.

This is the reason that no Navy in the world has inducted a VTOL UAV at this point and they are only testing with the technology. Most Navies around the world are using fixed wing long endurance UAV's (such as the Scan Eagle) to obtain endurance of up to 20 hours!!

Ship launched/ Recoverable Scan Eagle under FMS is the best choice for Pakistan Navy compared to what they have already tested, i.e S-100, APID and FALCO!

There was a locally built autogyro offered too.. had a good loiter time... good payload.. and speed..
but the PN was interested in something that could land on its deck in pitched seas..

Should buy Pakistani systems... saves money and are equally effective.

It will be the best for PN when the UAV will be ordered from a relyable Supplier, Turkey is a relyable Supplier and can offer a Range of fixed and VTOL UAV under TOT Agreement. The UAV can be produced in Pakistan with some indigenous Hardware. For a VTOL UAV Malazgirt will be a good Choice !

Awsome news ... lets see if the funds get released and second who is the winner to be .

I have no trust in Nauman Bashir.
Unarguably.... he can be termed as the biggest looser chief in history of Pak navy.
He lost Uboat and milgem.

he lost nothing - the GoP did not allocate the funds as it did not have them

The u-boat deal was funded and financed by the germans on some very favourable terms.

noman Bashir is indeed an idiot.

The non avalibality of funds for naval uav (if true) is a blessing in disguise for our local uav industry.

Sir, being the head of an institution he had to fight for it.
He gave in without any struggle, while whole Pakistan knows our govt. is controlled from Dehli.

I agree to fieldmarshal Germans were financing the U boat deal.
While our govt. never mind in taking high interest loans spending millions on foreign trips.

We also paid 78million to 30 years old frigates but never declined Turkish offer of new boats.

Present govt. is clearly moving to distance Pakistan from all friends and opportunities.

Baykar Makina does not have a Maritime tested UAV system either in VTOL or fixed wing category! Their mini-UAV systems are primarily for land ops and in use with the Turkish armed forces only! Their VTOL's are also under development and yet to be inducted in service
