What's new

New tax in Pak could make screening of Indian films expensive

Say No to vulgarity-
Say No to Bollywood-

Its a good news for local drama market aswell-
Say No to Turkish serials-

You shall be proposing replacing Indian tv with Turkish... rather you propose to block Turkish TV just because you are hurt with taxes on Indian movies!

Migrateto Iran or India and you will start to value Pakistan.

Quadruple the Tax and solve the energy crisis through Bollywood.:D

Here comes the brigade.... why not keep the tax and allow quality hollywood instead?

IMO... Pakistanis who are not influenced by love of Iran shall boycott Indian movies.

And the point is. Oh bhai if you don't like PTI. Fine. But at least bring something better and logical to criticize PTI. Whatever you have said till now makes no sense whatsoever and to be hnest you are making a fun of yourself with such behavior.

Make a honest and logical allegation and we would try to answer it. We can't say anything about your lame conspiracy theories except feeling sorry for you.

Where does the PTI comes in.. appoligist?

read the links one by one... there are official complains launched by Afghanistan for delay in containers comming from India at two instances.

In Punjab, you can by clothes, utensils, auto parts, decoration, cosmetics, shampoos, tea, chemicals, pharmaceuticals.... all made in india.

Are they falling from sky?

My advice to Pakistan Government is to stop all trade with India and stop facilitating India's trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia. Pakistan has nothing to gain with this trade with India. Everything India has to offer, we can get cheaper and better quality from China. Trade with India and facilitation of Indian goods to Afghanistan and Central Asia is a LOSE-LOSE Proposition for Pakistan.

Pakistan is a very small market for Bollywood but never the less a market, taxes or no taxes.

Every thing is fine but stop supporting imports from any country... we shall support local industry local investors.

We are more rich in natural resources than Saudi Arabia, other naturally rich country is Afghanistan.

lol.. bollywood wont pay taxes, bollywood will take its cut as always, tax burden will be on cine going people.

The purpose of the taxes is to discourage cinemas in Pakistan from showing Bollywood films because they would then have to increase prices of their tickets and/or refreshments to make back the money they loose.

So if the average Pakistani is in the mood to watch a movie with friends or family in most cases they will opt for the cheaper ticket (i.e. the Pakistani film) which brings in increased revenue for our film industry encouraging them to produce more films. Depending on how far the government goes with taxes, imo I would prefer an all out ban on Bollywood, it could very well end the Indian presence in our media. The simple truth of it is we do not need Bollywood Hollywood, etc... because Pakistan can meet its own entertainment needs.

Furthermore, we also need to note that Bollywood films have been growing more vulgar every year with less of a focus on story lines and more on immorality (particularly sex and nudity) which does not comply with our culture and values.

Silly step by GoP that will ultimately only nnegatively afffect Pakistan's movie goers.

Islamabad: A new tax proposed by the Pakistan government could hit the import of films and television serials produced in India and increase the prices of tickets at cinema halls across the country.

While unveiling the budget for 2013-14 in parliament, Finance Minister Ishaq Dar proposed an “adjustable withholding tax” to be levied on all foreign films and television serials.

The tax on a foreign-produced film will be Rs 1 million while the tax for a foreign-produced television drama serial will be Rs 100,000 per episode.

In the case of foreign-produced television plays too, the tax will be Rs 100,000, Dar said. “The new adjustable withholding tax is being proposed for foreign-based films and dramas to make them competitive with the local film industry,” he announced during his budget speech.

Pakistan imports dozens of Bollywood and Hollywood films every year. A ban imposed on the import of Indian films after the 1965 war was partially eased during former military ruler Pervez Musharraf‘s regime.

The restrictions were further eased under the previous Pakistan Peoples Party-led government. Film distributors have credited the import of Bollywood films, which are popular with people across Pakistan, for the revival of cinema-going culture in the country.

Several multiplexes in cities like Karachi and Rawalpindi screen only Bollywood productions. The new tax is adjustable, meaning importers or cinema hall owners can claim refunds while filing annual returns.

Officials said the tax was proposed to keep track of imported films and serials and discourage the reckless import of movies.

However, the new tax could lead to an increase in prices of tickets at cinema halls and multiplexes. Analysts said the new tax could also hit the import of foreign serials aired on Pakistani channels and cable networks.

Besides Indian serials and soaps, Turkish serials dubbed in Urdu are very popular with Pakistanis.

Are u kidding urself, when the complete ban on Indian movies from 1965-2006 didn't stopped Pakistani from watching Bollywood, u believe some taxes will....

Allowing Bollywood movies was the main reason for revival of ur Cinemas.

n about vulgarity part, keep enjoying watching Punjabi Mujras in ur Lollywood movies...:D

Abb Altaf bhai ka kiya hoga?
His video calls from abroad will be taxed the same for his dramatic performances? :D

Pakistan is a very small market for Bollywood but never the less a market, taxes or no taxes.

Do you think you can export your cheap made Bollywood pictures elsewhere? so best solution is feeding your hungry people with your excellent Bollywood production....

The truth is the government cannot stop people from watching anything like any other government. However, through the strict enforcement of the law and handing down severe punishment to those who violate it they can greatly reduce if not almost eliminate the presence of Indian media.

In case of a ban, if someone really wanted to watch a particular movie, would either download/stream a pirated copy from the internet, assuming they had enough bandwidth to do, so or would purchase a pirated copy from a store. Aside from the movie loosing some of their box office revenues from the Pakistani ban even circulation of pirated copies can be greatly reduced simply by imposing harsh penalties on those caught selling them (like confiscation of their assets and imprisonment for a set number of years).

Whether the bans affect Bollywood or not is none of our concern (it could be they lose little revenue in the end because from my experience almost no one watches Indian movies people are usually watching the news, cricket or Pakistani dramas with English speakers preferring Hollywood anyways) the point is to encourage the growth of local industry to supplement the countries entertainment needs and try out best to eliminate morally corrupt media.

Furthermore, with increased investment (which would go towards better film making equipment and most importantly into great scripts) we can create a very dynamic film industry.

I have seen one or two Pakistani movies and they were pretty good with no vulgarity that I could remember. I wouldn't be surprised if there are some films that are morally corrupt and I suspect it is because film makers haven't realized that what makes a film great is a good story and script not partial nudity.

Personally I would like Pakistani directors and script writers working together to some degree with South Korean directors and script writers since the latters film industry imo is on par with Hollywood and may very well soon surpass it in terms of the quality of films they produce.

Still Indian films will do far better business the Pakistani films. :victory:
