Kerala Police and Palakkad district officials rescued almost 600 children being transported into the state from Bihar and Jharkhand on the pretext of sending them to orphanages. Officials, however, fear this to be a clear case of child trafficking.

On May 24, the authorities rescued 456 children, who were being transported from Bihar and Jharkhand. On May 25, 123 boys were rescued from another train at Palakkad railway station.

The authorities rescued the children following tips from Railway Police.

Eight people among the 43 who were escorting the children who were rescued on May 24 have been arrested. Of the 43 adults, 10 were women who had 10 infants with them, 8 boys and 2 girls.

The children, between the ages of 6 and 14, were packed in 3 unreserved compartments of the Patna-Ernakulam Express.

All that the children know is that they have been sent from home to an unknown place in Kerala to a so-called shelter home which would give them food and education. But is that what lies in store for them? The children were accompanied by 43 adults, who claimed to be their caretakers.

Palakkad district collector K. Ramachandran said, "Based on a tip-off, we found that 456 children were being transported to Kerala. We rescued the children who were being brought from Bihar and Jharkhand. Many of the kids are between the age of 6 to 14. They speak Hindi and they were told that they are going to be given food and education."

The children were apparently being taken to a shelter home, the Moiuddin Poya Haji Memorial Home in Kozhikode, north Kerala. V. Beeran, the manager of the shelter home, said, "For the last few years, we haven't been getting any children in our home. So we got these children so that we can take care of needy children. There is no exploitation here."

The police are yet to ascertain whether the children were being brought to the shelter home or were being brought to be trafficked. As of now, 156 children (88 boys and 68 girls) have been housed in the government shelter in Palakkad after the child welfare committee took down their statements.

Another 124 boys have been shifted to Pezhumkara government home and 175 kids, 161 girls and 14 infant boys, have been shifted to Providence home, a home for the destitute run by nuns in Malampuzha.

Father Jose, chairperson, Child Welfare committee, Palakkad, said, "We have requested that the police investigate the matter. We are in touch with the police in the states these children belong. We are trying to get the addresses so that we can help trace their homes."

Obviously, there is more than what meets the eye.

The 123 boys, who were intercepted at Palakkad railway station, have been housed in the government boys' home in Malappuram. These children also were carrying ID cards of an orphanage in Malappuram. Investigations are on to confirm the veracity of the orphanage.

The collector added, "We are trying to trace where the children were actually being taken."

He has issued orders that until the probe has not been completed, the children will be taken care of by the government.

Kerala Police has filed an FIR under the Juvenile Justice Act and begun investigations. The collector is now seeking Chief Minister Oommen Chandy's intervention in rehabilitating these children back to their homes.

There was a recent big conspiracy unearthed by authorities that involved 'secular' political parties of the state hand in glove with such activities.

I don't know what is going on there but if that is to be true, we really have something dangerous.

Child trafficking is the worst thing that can happen to any society. It must be seriously taken an ruthlessly dealt with.

It is all about money and cheating the Govt of Kerala.More than that a possible scenario for terrorist supporting and child labour. Our social welfare minister
lighten a law for favouring this type of nasty jobs.
Due to drastic contraction of population among Keralites,Orphanages dont have enough childrens for moving forward. If they dont have childrens they dont get grants and money from govt and support from wealthy NRI's.Not only Muslims Christian orphange also follow this method.but they are within the law.
But some Muslims orphanges seems used unlawful methods.Agents in Jharkand and other places trafficked childrens from most poverty stricken by giving promises to their parents to make their children as engineers or doctors .And that poor people painfully gave them 1500rs
But dont know what is happening to them after that.It is shameful experience to Kerala

We are not Thailand and do not wish to be............Child trafficking is such a serious offense and has penetrated deeply into our society .

Ironically, a most progressive environment for care of children without parents, or children from extremely poor homes, has fallen flat on its face due to the twin effects of a declining population and of government pressure to show performance through numbers. The so-called child trafficking is a direct result of the pressure on orphanages to show numbers, and these numbers have been dropping.

A question for our members: is it a bad thing if children from poor areas are re-located to more prosperous areas? And looked after and introduced into society as educated, well-read adults?

That is indeed a good thing.. But there are allegations that these kids are used for organ harvestation and sex labour.. This indeed have to investigated.. Already no of organisations are putting pressure on government to withdraw FIR.. If they have nothing to afraid of then why this outcry?

It is good if they well educated but it dont seem like that.Because most of them dont get real modern education ,only madrassa education. It is good if it dont seed extremists values .But none get high skilled jobs due to that.

Secular parties and secular people are trafficking Muslim kids from Bangladesh in large quanities to local Orphanages. This happened in my friggin town . They are trying to change the demographics of Kerala

@Tshering22 this recent big conspiracy was also unearthed by the police which is governed by your so called " secular" government.. So give it a rest on blaming everything on secularism!!

It certainly needs investigation, in the first instance, AND it also needs close social and police supervision of the institutions they are going to. That goes without saying.

My question was independent of the facts and circumstances of the present case.

This is just shocking but poverty and neglect will lead to these types of social problems. Govt should invest more in education and family planning.

Well you dont know the malayalis. That tactics will not work here.Best example is this case. Now all that privileges and nasty jobs will come to an end.I dont like our home minister when he say he is secular. But now I like him ,he took action against them even if there is a pressure from IUML.
Good job Kerala media. It is not instant inflammatory national media. They taught this case very well.

Yes, its indeed a good move if there is no harm happens to that kids.. Government is giving these orphanages grants and there kids can have a better life here. As @sreekumar mentioned, if these kids are from most poverty stricken areas then its better for them to relocate.. I understand that its hard for them to be separated from their parents but they atleast get food at regular intervals..
