NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party was set for a resounding victory but a reduced majority at elections in the country’s most populous state Uttar Pradesh, exit polls forecast on Monday.

Exit polls are not always reliable in India, but an average of four indicated that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), led in the state by firebrand monk Yogi Adityanath, would win 240 seats — more than enough for a majority in the 403-seat assembly.

The official results for the bellwether state, which is home to more than 200 million people, will be announced on Thursday.

Voting took place over several weeks in different rounds, the last of which was on Monday.

The BJP won by a landslide in the previous state election in 2017, sweeping 312 seats in the state, which sends more lawmakers to the national parliament than any other.

The BJP’s main rival Samajwadi (Socialist) Party, which has been seeking to tap into discontent over job losses and rising prices, was predicted to finish second with 150 seats.

Experts say the result in Uttar Pradesh will be viewed as a referendum on Modi, who was re-elected in 2019 and could seek a third term in 2024. Results are also due in four other states that have voted.

A monk known for his incendiary anti-Muslim rhetoric leads the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) into elections in India's most populous state on Thursday, where a strong win could put him in pole position to succeed Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Yogi Adityanath, 49, has stirred controversy since his surprise appointment in 2017 as chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, a state in northern India home to over 200 million people.

Office has done nothing to temper his views, and as he seeks a second term he is exhorting Hindu voters to back the BJP while riding roughshod over Muslims who make up one-fifth of the state's population.

A hardline protege of Modi, Adityanath has soared in popularity beyond Uttar Pradesh, thanks to his fiery speeches and projection as a tough, no-nonsense administrator.

“He is brazenly open about his Hindu politics and ideology ... He has projected himself as a Hindu leader and that's what brings him crowds and votes,” said journalist and political commentator Sunita Aron.

“When he does Muslim-bashing, he grabs eyeballs and audiences,” she told AFP.
In the run-up to the bellwether polls this week, the saffron-clad monk did not mince his words, saying it would be a fight between “80 per cent and 20pc”, referring to the state's demographic split on religion.

Crowds thronged one rally for a glimpse of the ascetic, despite coronavirus restrictions, cheering loudly each time he made a mocking reference to Muslim voters.

“They are worshippers of Jinnah,” he tweeted last month.

“Pakistan is dear to them, we sacrifice our life for Maa Bharati (Mother India).”

Demolition of BSP show near complete consolidation of Dalit voters towards BJP. It's a big misconception that BJP is a party upper castes if it was it would never have achieved the electoral victories they had in last decade. In reality it's the Dalits and other backward castes that keeps BJP in power. This lower caste vote consolidation is what make Modis BJP different from that of Vajpayee's era.

Everyone knew BJP would win UP

Why create a thread for it?

When is Yogi becoming the PM?

He has credible achievements.....I know you don't care for those.

Not just credible but incredible achievements I say : Hate speeches long ago which added to the current atmosphere of lynch mobbing, then the "Anti-Romeo Squad" basically meaning harassing and extorting from love couples or just passing male-female friends, then becoming Bulldozer Baba, not saving people from oxygen shortage deaths, then from COVID, then the current election fraud, then pasting his name on projects initiated by the previous SP government, etc. Incredible achievements.

Uttar Pradesh is the (almost) the same (population) size of Pakistan. He did major improvements (changes) in the last 5 years in terms of law and order and other similar.

Despite what you (intend / want) to believe, muslim leadership in India is not at all forward looking, which is the source of all problems for that community. Traditionally, they are just interested in identity / communcal politics. Just as any other country, forward looking leaders in Indian muslim community have never been able to lead them (such leaders were always side-lined).

Despite what you want to believe, there is no discrimination in distribution of welfare schemes and other govt programmes in UP. sabka saath, sabka vikas. This time, significant sections of Muslim women (are assumed to have) voted for BJP.

Thank you for the certificate. It was much needed, to counter the propaganda by some who claimed to have suffered from the erratic government of this lunatic. It was so good that someone gave us the true picture.

What is the relevance of this remark?

We have been through this before, and discussed it threadbare. It is impertinent to call his murderous vigilante actions 'improvements in law and order'.
