Indeed they should have launched it much earlier

Re. above beml giant truck, sales are booked for yrs. on end. PSU beml has the typical mentality of owning and abusing the market. No competition for all beml products, but instead of growing the market they dig waiting lists.

Here's 1 Co. that must go into a hyper drive re. Modi's coal and mineral auction, re. manufacturing, they have Global demand. Indian mine operators are dying for their stuff and delays are holding up the economy. Beml is so good they came out of nowhere to turn into 1 of the top metro coach suppliers in the world.

Over to Gujarat.

Gujarat’s Sanand India’s Detroit in the making

Gujarat’s Sanand, India’s Detroit in the making - The Economic Times

So approx. 35000 OEM'S jobs.

1 Cr. of input creates 1 IT job, or 3-5 semi skilled or semi literate types to work in supplier and contractor Co.'s plus the food, clothing and sales bazaar eco-system.

Easily 1 Lakh jobs.
I doubt if the local catchment can supply that.

As usual, the bottom of the pyramid will be packed by Biharis and Bhaiyyas, standard practice in sparsely populated and reasonably developed, business like western India.

The area is the world's lowest cost auto cluster and location is a killer app. for the African, Mid and Central Asian, South-East Asian and even Indian markets re. coastal shipping routes. Not to mention Af.-Pak. markets.

Re. Tata Nano, it's not that bad. Nano car brand maybe not, but the Nano platform's been a super hit for the Co. Nano platform based mini trucks and micro buses are the world's fastest selling models like the Tata Ace. They bought the parent Co. bumper profits in the $ Billions, no joke.

Detroit, by the way, is not what it used to be. The Detroit municipality is bankrupt and vast swathes of the city are burnt or boarded up. Hardly comparable to up & up aapro Amdavad.

When will this be launched?
Was contemplating buying XUV500 in July but this baby blows Mahindra out of the water.

It's concept, but I've seen an interview where they said it'll enter production by the end of 2015. I would expect the production model to be toned down a bit.

TATA also said all of it's newer production models will take a lot from it's new concepts, like the Hexa.

So no possibility in 2015.
Damn,stuck to XUV500 then.

Tata Jaguar, Land Rover and Mahindra Ssangyong even Hero or Bajaj integration is showing in the concepts.

Give it time, looks like desi Co.'s may offer their foreign buy-outs tech. at local prices.

If not, then go ahead and buy local Co.'s Global buy-outs products at foreign prices.

There's been a spate of car plant expansions.
Mega plants, new fund injections are turning said plants into world's top plants by size.

60-1 Lakh cars/per annum is standard local type plant. 1-2.5 Lakh cars is good regional or national plant. Above that is boom time, above average Global scale. Mass market Hyundai, Suzuki, Tata and Hero, Bajaj and TVS and some tractor makers or Enfield are easily pulling way above their weight. Local and export driven biz.

No fan of Congress party, but they did plan this a transportation manufacturing game and India's today Top 5 in end-to-end transportation biz. Think railways, trams, bendy and double deckers buses, moon rockets, pedal and auto-rickshaws and bullock carts. Only exception : Jumbo jets.
