only a few MAA-1A were purchased/evaluated.
PAF decided better to wait for the new variant

Why didn't pakistan go for Chinese WVR missile such as PL9?

Why didn't pakistan go for Chinese WVR missile such as PL9?

The PL-9 is a short-range,
infrared-homing air-to-air
missile (AAM) developed by
the People's Republic of China .
china have SD-10 in service currently as BVR..
in WVR category we have more trusted anericans weapon systems and i suppose PAF don't want to put it all eggs in one basket..
soo this time we are not completely counting on single natiin...

As someone correctly pointed out, Without any HMD, MAA-1B potential will be wasted. Plus A-Darter will be put into serial production next year, what's the point of purchasing MAA-1B Pirahana than?

Pakistan to order Brazilian MAA-1B air-to-air missiles, AIR-TO-AIR

Pakistan will procure Brazilian-made Mectron MAA-1B Piranha 2 short-range infrared-guided air-to-air missiles to arm its Chinese-made JF-17 fighters, according to Pakistani press reports on 5 November. The procurement is reportedly for 100 missiles at a cost of USD108 million.

Pakistan had taken delivery of the MAA-1A Piranha 1 version of this missile in 2010 and had signed a letter of intent to order the more advanced MAA-1B. The reported order would be the first known export sale for the MAA-1B, currently planned to enter service with the Brazilian Air Force in 2012.

pl-9c already in active service, can be used with JFT if required, standard missile is PL-5EII which has similar performance but a better seeker.

Source for PL9c in PAF? Source for Pl5EII being standard missile for JF17?

When it comes to purchasing weapons from China, Pakistan can get anything it wants.

Consider the CM400AKG-carrier killer missile. So if PAF deems it needs PL-9, it will get it.

Right now PAF is awaiting completion of delivery for 500 AIM120Cs and SD-10A/Bs. So any missile that is deemed necessary, we will get it.
