Why is JF-17 fighter China cheap but still dull?

(Soha.vn) - After a lot of effort to promote, present new Pakistan Air Force JF-17 officially on the payroll while other countries have proved to be very cold this aircraft. 04/04/2014

Fighter versatile seat 4th generation JF-17 (FC-1) is the product of cooperation China - Pakistan was designed as a combat aircraft that have lower costs can still meet the requirements of modern warfare. The goal when JF-17 production in China mainly directed at foreign markets to replace the J-7 basically has no export potential.

JF-17 is advertised quite advanced features: equipped aircraft engines RD-93 (variant of the RD-33 engines on the MiG-29) have thrust by burning extra fuel around 8,300 kg, help aircraft reach speeds of Mach 1.8; operating range of 3,000 km. KLJ-7 radar of JF-17 by the Institute of Electronics Technology Nanjing manufacturing can simultaneously track 10 targets and simultaneously destroy two targets, target detection range front is 75 km, rear is 35 km, target detection over 135 km from the sea. JF-17 with 7 pylons carry 3.6 tons of weapons on duty to control attack to destroy targets in the air, on land and at sea. In particular, relatively low-cost aircraft when compared to the multi-functional fighter other light.

However, after a lot of effort to promote introduction, only the current Pakistan Air Force JF-17 officially on the payroll while other countries have proved to be very cold this aircraft. Situations that may stem from the following reasons.

JF-17 can be regarded as a comprehensive upgrade technology combined with Asia - Europe aims to replace the MiG-21 was obsolete and expiring use in poor countries. JF-17 fighter of the line but versatile weapon carrying capability and range not more Mig-21 is included. Although billed as have a range of up to 3,000 km and a combat radius of 1,400 km, but this parameter causes huge doubt for professionals.

With a range like that, JF-17 is not inferior to the heavyweight fighter has great fuel compartment as the Su-30 or F-15 while it is a light combat aircraft size equivalent F-16, the only mounted engine of the MiG-29 - the famous line aircraft because of poor performance with the murky stream of black smoke. When carrying out comparisons with a light combat aircraft advanced China's J-10 has an operational radius of 550 km, you can see the number of views on the fly is too much exaggeration.
With the ability to carry weapons and range as above, to properly perform the functions of a versatile fighter, the JF-17 will have plenty offs, in other words if you want to carry more bombs or name fire for land / ship, it will have to give up other things at home. For air defense fighter mission, we can see quite clearly the limitations of the JF-17 as the aircraft's radar has a range of no greater than radar of Mig-21 upgrade is the community, more speed and climbing ability is inferior to MiG-21.

Meanwhile, the upgraded Block II JF-17 is now worth nearly $ 35 million ($ 15 million compared to the first version), it's never cheap price when compared to features that JF -17 fall into "not to high, not low finish." Poor countries or will try to upgrade, extend the service life of MiG-21 or will choose to buy an aircraft has been tested practical than buying a new airplane featuring old and had never experienced actual combat.

Another reason is also important is the origin of the equipment on the JF-17 as we always say is "5 3 mother father", this is really a nightmare when to conduct maintenance and repair treatment, to ensure sustained combat techniques especially when the country is poor reuse. Supply of spare parts of the JF-17 is also no guarantee will not always ready, can take the example of Russia has expressed vigilant and will not provide RD-93 engines for the JF-17 when the realize the export potential of its MiG-29 are affected. Also besides performance issues, RD-93 engines are also evaluated the reliability is not high, unsafe, just so fitting for 2 engine aircraft as a precaution Mig29/35 incident.

For some reasons, can see immediate JF-17 will also encounter numerous difficulties on the path to become fighter cheap popular around the world.

It does not matter who did this poor translation, the fact remains that unless and untill jf-17 comes with proven aesa radar ,ws-13 engine and bvr missile capable enough to stand agaist f-16 mk60, eurofighter, rafale, gripen or sukhoi-35 our thunder has no chance for sale out side Pakistan, except perhaps as a advance jet trainer.

the only issue regarding engine is that it being russian may have some implication if blocked. i dont think so the problem is performance.
jf-17 market is very limited. countries with money wll obviously go for proven aircrafts like gripen or f-16s.
country with ties with russia will go for mig29/su 30 mki.
the countries having ties with china are too poor to afford any fighter. they will either opt for k-8 or f-7s or frankly they wouldnt care about maintaing any air force.
ws-13a will bring alot to table especially it will attarct customers who might shy away due to uncertainity in russian behavoir regarding it supply.
anyway even if its not sold we should consider thunder a success, as it was primarily built for PAF not for expert.

If russians had to block they would have blocked it long ago it has been 13 years rd-93 is in use from prototype till date.

No poor country is going to buy Gripen or F-16 they are simply very expensive. JF-17's problem is engine is not ready without it how are you marketing that product with a third party engine it is bound to fail. F-7 assembly finally has shut down. The very last of mig-29 potential markets are egypt and iraq and perhaps serbia.

its about perception, even the slightest risk of say even 0.01% will offset potential sales.
second is that a poor country cant even afford jf-17, the reason for its failed potential sales( zimbabwae, srilanka and argentina)
poor countries want either f-7(closed) so they decided to searcch for any other old cheap thing in case of Argentina ie Israel made mirage 5
so basically,
  1. rich and intermediate countries will go for western gripens and older f-16s
  2. rich and intermediate with no USA access will go for mig29s and su 30s
  3. low end countries who previously got f-7s(Bangladesh) will either wait or will go for older plateforms just like Argentina(mirage 5)
  4. some countries will simply opt for K-8 as in some south american countries
having said that there is still some hope but the pitch that the aircraft is very cheap will not work as its not cheap(5-7 million of f-7 vs 25 million of thunder).
if some country can afford to buy 20 thunders, then they can also afford to buy 12 mig29s or 12 older f-16s..

thunder can beat su 30 or mig 29 only if it increase its performance and is not dependent in anyway on any other country.
countries like to buy a few knock down versions of mig29 or su 30 rather than building huge air forces like cold era days, the reason for mig 21 sucess!
potentials which i see

  1. Azerbaijan as it has limited acess to both russian and USA and has a conflict
  2. srilanka(depends upon there law and order situation too)
  3. argentina(now gone but may be later)
  4. eygpt(now gone due to saudi money)

China could not satisfy argentinian request first they must have pointed out to the russian engine and the current Chinese engine but in a long run JF-17 would have been a good deal compared to israeli Kfir block 60 by 2030 it would not be able to compete. An order for block 2 and later block 3 in numbers would have been a good step but they too did not invest time to think. I am not sure what would be the future of Kfir block 60 by 2030 compared to JF-17 later blocks that has alot of room for improvement and modernization and perhaps NG variant provided funds and sort of consortium.

100% biased!!! JF-17s are super machine... Its the Pakistani economy that is eating it up. GoP should give money for JF-17, K-8 and Super Mushak production...

Hi,

What difference the emittance of smoke going to play---none whatsoever----war is not about smog pollution---. The JF would meet the needs of most of the third world countries----. Mig29 is not the answer for most of these 3rd world countries---it is expensive to maintain and it does not offer anything more than this aircraft does.

The only problem with the JF is the time of marketing----now is not the moment to market it----. Now is the time to develop it----make something out of it that people want to come and be interested on their own.

Pakistan is too eager to offer and sell this aircraft---. There was no need for that----. It should not have been offered at a cheap price----. Pakistanis need to know that PRICE DOES NOT SELL---. FEATURES AND BENEFITS SELL----the equipment package sells----what the equipment does for you sells----after sales service sells---availability of accessories sells---no sanctions sells.

Eagerness does not sell----being truthfull does not sell---.

Pakistan is selling from a position of weakness----pakistan needs to sell from a position of strength. You never do good when your stance is weak.

Everyone knows pakistan does not have the money to build JF17's for itself---it needs to sell to build----. If pakistan was already into the second batch buildup and ordered the 3rd batch----the sale of this aircraft would have happened. This is one of the biggest hurdles in the sale of the aircraft----.

This is just a simple ABC of sales.

the risk of sanctions from an imported engine can be an issue.
it will get a boast if a chinese engine is made and used by either PAF or PLAAF
even then market isnt huge for thunder as countries are only worried about insurgency these days.

Well.... it does emit smoke which definitely is not a sell friendly trait.
That is not an important issue, considering latest video (from Dubai show). Besides I remember Pervez Shamim sb sharing a video of F-16 belching a lot of smoke. At some power settings an engine would produced more smoke.

The article has been written with a strong unfriedbly and overly critical bias coupled with incorrect information.

1. The article doubts if the range of JF-17 is much more than Mig 21. I bet the author does not know that the plane flew to Farnborough show a few years ago. It made stops along the way, but I doubt a short range fighter could even attempt to do so.

2. The writer says that the price has increased to 35 millions USD. How does he know? An addition of IFR and some upgrades does not double the price.

3. The article talks about difficult maintenance. WTH? One of the salient points about designing this plane was to ensure that it was easy to service / maintain / and turn around for next mission.

4. And of course the smoky engine thing is mentioned yet again. Even though this issue seems to have receded since at least last year, the author still makes it.

5. At this point it is difficult to form an opinion about export prospects. JF-17 has not yet come out with a production Block II. It is still a young program. Why fret?

The author makes tall claims without providing any reference. This is just a negative hit-job, that is all.

How so? and would like some proof, heard there was a problem with the intakes.

How so? and would like some proof, heard there was a problem with the intakes.

There is a difference in smokiness between the earlier videos/pics and the latest ones. Earlier prototypes did indeed have a lot of smoke. There is some residual effect that can still be observed. But basically it is not such an issue as before.

Vietnam and China are not the best friends... What do you expect from Viatnamese? It is like USA telling that PAKFA is super duper...

I feel that getting an Aircraft up in the air in such a small time ...is a great job !!
every platform will evolve so even though I am from the other side of the fence, I say that this is a fantastic war bird and it will evolve .... so look at a glass which is half full ....
