What's new

Israel chose Italian M-346 over Korean T-50

Can you ask that dude in details how he became a Fighter jet pilot?
Really need this info thanx
He was qualified, healthy and able.

Not just anyone can become a Jet pilot, you need to ask the Turkish army for their qualifications.

Well, someone had to be angry
Well, kiss Iron Dome sales good buy. Sames goes for the Spike missile.

There were billions of dollars worth of purchases planned or in negotiation over the T-50 deal. That's all gone now. Those included

- Iron Dome
- Additional Spike NLOS
- Four tanker conversion work
- C-130s modified for Special Forces infiltration.
- Israeli parts and sub-systems for helicopters, T-50, and KFX
- New simulators.

All gone.

I doubt it, S. Korea is exactly the type of country that needs those. Especially Iron Dome.

I doubt it
Don't doubt it, they are all really gone.

The Iron Dome is useless against an NK type artillery force. The only effective solution is JDAM that bombs the point of attack origin. NK is no Hezbollah/Hamas.

The Iron Dome was only mentioned as a specific offset trade, not because Korea actually needed it.

So you are saying that SK is so desperate that is ready to trade its planes for systems it does not need? :undecided:

Artillery is useless at ranges over 30 km. Iron Dome can intercept rockets with range up to 70 km, it can protect sensitife facasilities like chemical industries. Furthmore the main component of Iron Dome is excellent artillery radar, which calculates location of enemy artillery and helps to destroy it.

To build the sales history before the all-important USAF T-X contest. Israeli Airforce was considered very important because of its status as a "high-end" airforce.

But this may not matter much now, because it's becoming clearer that the USAF wants a supersonic jet able to match the flying profile of an F-16 so that F-16s could be sent to front-line and not be used for training, and the only trainer able to do this is the T-50. T-50's only realistic competitors are US-developed models from Boeing and Northrop.

So can the Iron Dome intercept 100 shells per minute like North Koreans were firing during the shelling?

No need for it because the local artillery radar will enter production by 2016. Saab's ARTHUR will be license produced until the local model is ready.

There is very little that one can buy only from Israel.

You did not answer my question: why do u will to trade ur trainers for systems u dont need.

As I said long range rockets are not in big numbers, they also have bad accuracy. But even one such rocket falling on some chemical plant can cause very serious damage. So its better to protect them.

But Iron Dome dombines devense (interceptors) with offense (detecting the launch site).

Korea has a history of buying weapons it didn't need to close the deal it wanted. Like T-80 tanks, BMP-3, and Ilyushin Il-103 from Russia(KA-32 also was initially unwanted, but has since found a liking for it) to get tech transfers, CN-235 from Indonesia(Korea has piles of CN-235 because Korea bought some every time it sold weapons to Indonesia), etc. There is also a discussion to buy T-129 attack helicopter from Turkey to appease Turks in order to seal the deal on the KFX.

Korea was fully ready to buy the Iron Dome and other Israeli weapons didn't have an immediate need for in order to close the T-50 deal. Stopping the brute firepower of the NK artillery with the Iron Dome? Who would think of such a thing? At least not Koreans.

OK, understood. We have a different approach: we dont buy systems we dont need.

And Israel won't be making multi-billion dollar deals, because big deals require big offset trades.

What Israel specialize is a bunch of small deals like missiles and sub-systems. so offset trades may not matter.

We export 4 times more weapons than you, although ur population is 7 times bigger.
