Is NATO Expansion Good? Any Impact for Pakistan

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a military alliance that consists of 28 member states from North America and Europe. It was established at the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on 4 April 1949. Article Five of the treaty states that if an armed attack occurs against one of the member states, it should be considered an attack against all members, and other members shall assist the attacked member, with armed forces if necessary.

Of the 28 members of NATO, two are North American countries (Canada & United States) and 26 are European countries. All members have militaries, although Iceland does not have a normal army (it does, however, have a military coast guard and a small unit of soldiers for peacekeeping operations). Three of NATO's members have nuclear weapons: United Kingdom, France & United States.

Major non-NATO ally (MNNA) is a designation given by the United States government to exceptionally close allies who have close strategic working relationships with US armed forces but are not members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. While the MNNA status does not automatically include a mutual defense pact with the United States, it does confer a variety of military and financial advantages that otherwise are not obtainable by non-NATO countries.

Nations named as major non-NATO allies are eligible for the following benefits:

Entry into cooperative research and development projects with the Department of Defense (DoD) on a shared-cost basis
Participation in certain counter-terrorism initiatives
Purchase of depleted uranium anti-tank rounds
Priority delivery of military surplus (ranging from rations to ships)
Possession of War Reserve Stocks of DoD-owned equipment that are kept outside of American military bases
Loans of equipment and materials for cooperative research and Development projects and evaluations
Permission to use American financing for the purchase or lease of certain defense equipment
Reciprocal training
Expedited export processing of space technology
Permission for the country's corporations to bid on certain DoD Contracts for the repair and maintenance of military equipment outside the United States

NATO expansion will ultimately lead to disintegration of UN. Then what will follow God knows.

USA Arms Sales are propping up Pakistan as a Regional Challenger

The American ambassador in Islamabad has said that the US Defence Department is considering the sale of 12 unarmed drones to Pakistan.

A few months ago, Air Chief Marshal Rao Quamar Suleman, Chief of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), had accepted the first F-16 Block 52 aircraft on behalf of his nation at the Lockheed Martin facility at Fort Worth, Texas. The remaining aircraft will be delivered in 2010. The total order, worth US$5.1 billion, is for 12 F-16Cs and six F-16Ds. When this transfer is completed, it will raise the total number of F-16s in service with the PAF to 54.

Earlier, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency had notified Congress of a Foreign Military Sale to Pakistan of 115 M109A5 155mm self-propelled howitzers as well as associated equipment and services. The total value, if all options are exercised by Pakistan, could be as high as $56 million.

The USA designation of Pakistan as a Major Non-NATO Ally (MNNA) in March 2004.

The sale of Orion maritime surveillance aircrafts, the Phalanx gun systems and the 2000 TOW anti-tank-cum-bunker busting missiles falls in this category.

USA design to engage the Pakistan Navy in joint reconnaissance and patrolling of the sea lanes in the Gulf region by bolstering its capability.

USA is planning to cooperate with Pakistan Navy through its Central Command.
