There is something seriously disturbing about villages in the Raichur district of Karnataka. As stunted and malnourished children cry in hunger pangs and helpless parents look for support from authorities, story of Raichur portrays India's endemic problem of hunger and deprivation.

Over 2,600 children under the age of 6 years have died of malnutrition in Raichur district of Karnataka during the past two years, as per data provided by women and child welfare department.

India stands bottom in the nutrition barometer and shares its position along with countries like Angola, Cameroon, Congo and Yemen.

Save the Children's Nutrition Barometer is a study of nutrition-specific commitments by 36 developing countries across the globe. The study finds India sharing space with two other countries at the bottom of the table.

Shocking Statistics

The study makes some shocking disclosures. According to the report, almost half of Indian children are underweight and stunted, and more than 70 per cent of women and kids have serious nutritional deficiencies such as anaemia.

Even in the wealthy families, one child in five is undernourished, says the study.

The number of Indian children dying before their fifth birthday declined from 12 million in 1990 to 6.9 million in 2011 globally, the data adds.

India's neighbours like Bangladesh, Pakistan and Nepal are also part of the report, but they fare better than the big brother in dealing with malnutrition, says the study.

Hunger: "National Shame"

Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has branded malnutrition among children a "national shame", after a report said nearly half of children under five in the country were underweight.

According to the report, 42 per cent of children in that age bracket are suffering from malnutrition.
Singh said the level of malnutrition in India was "unacceptably high".

The Hunger and Malnutrition Report also said that one in three malnourished children in the world is Indian.

Reasons behind malnourishment

One doesn't require opinion from experts to find out the reasons behind malnourishment. We all know, India is a country where more than half-of-its population are living below the poverty line. Acute poverty, unemployment, poor income and lack of health services coupled with government's apathy towards providing food for all has made hunger a "national disease" for underprivileged children.

Figures say that India hardly spends on health programmes. Only 1.67% of GDP has been earmarked in the 12th Plan for health.

Why its a matter of national shame...????Infact removing a hunger and providing healthcare and education are three milestones to cover. It may be matter of shame to the tea-party gossiping corrupt elites for others its matter of concern.

BTW 12th plan has 1.95 % of GDP earmarked for health care .

Even with soo many people, india is still a middle hdi country. With Pakistani and bangladesh in low hdi, competing with zimbabwe and somalia. India is doing fine and soon these people will join 350 million strong indian middle class..

Maybe the Indians can take a 5-minute break from China-bashing, in order to look at their own problems first?

I thought Indians were always claiming that they were "Aryans"?

How you different or claim to ridicule others when only 300 million out 1.6 billion han are in prosperity. was not your nation celebrating how an american gave food and water to your poor a few months back?

I'm not going to argue with this Indian "Aryan", so go back to posting anti-China threads.

Yet it is India that has more poverty/malnutrition than the entire continent of Africa?

Here is an idea.

It's a national shame because this is the 21st century and and half of all Indian children are starving and underweight while the Indian government is helping the rich rob the country's wealth. As part of the Indian grand strategy: keep the people ignorant and in perpetual poverty so you can control them like sheep. Seems to be working well.

India is about only 10 places ahead of Pakistan and BD in HDI. Pot calling the kettle black.

Just shut the phuck up, India is not a dictatorship, go and learn something about how India is run and what govt is doing. Indians are not controlled like sheep. India is a ddeveloping country and is developing but we need to increase the pace.

I would not call it a strategy or give any conspiracy angle, poverty is not something that easy to tackle, especially if you have billion plus people.

what do you base that India has more on? every stat you are fed is state driven in China. The same state that said there was no Sars case in China or only 1000 people died in earthquakes when in reality over 100,000 died.:undecided:

may be shame for you not for me.One can control people like sheep in dictatorship not when your vote chose them. And govt wont come and clean your house that you have to do it yourself.

Bringing them out of poverty if not the hard part. In canada they get welfare but canada doesn't want a space program, military program, build supercomputers, invest 100 billlion in power sector and do many other things India does.

We have to educate them in a sustainable way, so they can go ahead and take lead in the nation. This takes time but its happening.

Rise of dalit millionares from the bottom end of India proves that this is happening.
