GWADAR: Prime Minister Imran Khan Friday launched work on New Gwadar International Airport (NGIAP) and announced various other development schemes for the city, what he believed would become an engine of growth for Pakistan.

“What a pleasure it is to be in Gwadar. Insha Allah, in coming months, years, Gwadar would be, I see, as engine of growth for Pakistan,” he said addressing the ground breaking ceremony of the airport.

The event was attended by federal ministers, Balochistan chief minister, parliamentarians, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Chinese Ambassador in Pakistan Yao Jing besides huge number of Chinese workers and government officials.

The airport was included among Early Harvest High Priority Project of China Pakistan Economic Corridor in January 2014. The Chinese government would assist Pakistan for construction of the airport under Chinese Grant Assistance.

The project is part of overall infrastructure development of Balochistan. It would be developed as a green-field facility with all modern facilities for safe operation.

The new Gwadar airport would be able to accommodate large aircraft such as A380. The project would comprise a modern terminal building with cargo terminal having initial handling capacity of 30,000 tons per year.

On this occasion, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed for construction of Pakistan and China Vocational Training Institute and Pak-China Friendship Hospital.

The prime minister, who earlier unveiled the plaque of the project, thanked Chinese ambassador for the grant given by the Chinese government for the airport.

He welcomed the participants of the expo and said the event would grow with each coming year.

He assured the fishermen not to worry about their sustenance owing to the construction of the highway as special bridges would be built to facilitate them.

The Prime Minister categorically said any development would be of no use unless it benefited the local people.

He said in the past, the locals were ignored while executing the development projects in Balochistan.

Imran Khan said gas worth billions of rupees was extracted from Sui but it could not change the living standard of the local people.

He said it was pleasing that the capacity of the hospital in Gwadar would be enhanced and a vocational training institute would also help create employment opportunities.

The prime minister announced to launch Insaf Sehat Card to provide health insurance cover worth Rs720,000 to every family.

He said previously power was being transmitted from Iran, but now the government had decided to link the area with national grid.

A desalination plant would also be set up in the city and under Clean and Green Pakistan, one million saplings would be planted. Besides, a solid waste management system would also be established to protect the area from pollution.

He said following the models of Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, the government had decided to recycle water in Gwadar to water the plants.

Khan told the gathering that Gwadar and Quetta would be linked through railways as it was the best travel mode but unfortunately Pakistan had been lagging behind in this sector.

He said Chinese support was being sought for up-gradation of the railways system as the country had the most advanced rail system. He said one could travel from Karachi to Lahore within four hours if you take Chinese train.

Imran said having located at an ideal location and being well connected, Gwadar’s development would be the development of whole of Pakistan.

Prime Minister Khan said he was looking forward to extending bilateral cooperation with China during his upcoming visit in late April in various fields like train technology, agriculture and cage fishery.

Commended the work of the Chinese workers in Gwadar, he said soon a cargo and passenger ferry service would also be launched from Gwadar to Karachi that would later be extended to Qatar.

GWADAR, Pakistan, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan broke ground for the construction of the China-funded New Gwadar International Airport on Friday, which would link Pakistan's fast-rising southwest Gwadar port city with the rest of the world.

According to the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform, the 230 million U.S. dollar project fully funded by the Chinese government under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) would be completed in a period of three years, which is located in Gurandani area, some 26 km northeast of Gwadar city of Balochistan province.

The construction of the new airport would be managed by the China Airport Construction Group and it would be capable of handling a combination of ATR 72, Airbus A-380, Boeing B-737 and Boeing B-747 for domestic and international routes.

Covering an area of 18 square km, the new airport would be the second largest airport in Pakistan.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who performed the groundbreaking at a ceremony, appreciated the speedy and quality work by the Chinese companies and individuals in Gwadar, adding that Gwadar has become an engine of growth for the whole country.

Khan said that he is looking forward to seeking cooperation from the Chinese government in a number of fields, including railways, agriculture and fishing.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing said under CPEC and the Belt and Road Initiative, the long term friendship and cooperation between China and Pakistan has entered into a new form and new dimension.

Both sides have decided to usher in the new stage of economic expansion under CPEC with cooperation in the industrialization and social sector by introducing new projects, said Yao, adding that the new airport is just the beginning of the new stage and more projects will come soon.

The ambassador said that China, as the traditional partner, firmly stands with Pakistan on the road towards development and stability and Chinese people are helping Pakistani people achieve their prosperity.

Chief Minister of Balochistan Jam Kamal Khan said that the transportation infrastructure projects under CPEC in Balochistan are reducing traveling time, uplifting socio-economic activity for the local population by providing direct and quick access to main markets.

"The things are progressing and people of my province are willing to have business to business cooperation with Chinese," said the chief minister, vowing to provide maximum facilitation to the investors who come to avail opportunities.

During the ceremony, the Chinese and Pakistani sides also signed memorandum of understanding regarding a vocational training institute and a friendship hospital.

didnt gawadar get a new airport 10 years ago.

also dont understand why they are making airport for A-380 and 747 when airlines are phasing these planes out and choosing smaller aircrafts.

realistically PIA should be investing money in the airport and making it a hid for all regional and international passengers, like how dubai is for emirates and abu dhabi for eithad, PIA should make gawdar its regional hub.

Also Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar are deserpatley in need of new world class airports.

Why do you as a foreigner care so much about Pakistan’s debt?
Why do you as a foreigner care so much about Pakistan’s debt?
Tell me why does a guy from Netherlands care what I think about Pakistan?

China’s has crippled its allies with dependancy look at Sri Lanka I care more about China here. It needs to treat it’s allies better and not just as parking spaces for money or potential debt trap prey. Truly sad that Sri Lanka had to give up its port to China is that Gwadar’s future?

It's a grant from China... Not a loan. Free airport.
Can you share a source? I’m very surprised because a few month ago when Pakistan approached China for help with financial crisis they said they would only loan money. In that case I think a loan with favourable rates towards Pakistan would have been okay, but I don’t think that China is in the business of simply handing out money.

And India blights everyone around it with its existence. Don't you wish you had the money and power to be a player, Pajeet? Keep your jealousy to yourself, the world is sick and tired of your whining.

Great. But not surprising.... all part of the Grand Blueprint.

Soon everyone shall begin to see Financial Infrastructure (PKR-RMB) to be developed for SEZs one of the key objectives of CPEC.

It is key to have such a financial infrastructure for Pak's integeration into geo-economics of Eurasia and NE Asia.

A more welcoming news is Chinese package for uplift of poverty in Balochistan and Pakistan... around a 1+ Bln. Focused on water, health and skills training.

No wonder the enemies of Sino-Pak Axis are dying to damange this deep socio-economic-financial-military relationship.

ISLAMABAD: The spadework for construction of Gwadar International Airport measuring 4,300 acres and costing $246 million has, now, been completed, and both the Pakistani and the Chinese authorities are currently engaged to sort out modalities to initiate construction work in April this year, sources told The News here on Sunday.

“Currently, the Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) comprising the Pakistani and the Chinese officials look forward to initiate work on the Gwadar Airport in March as the feasibility study of the project has been completed, reviewed and approved by the competent authorities,” the sources said.

According to the latest official record, the design and work plan has been approved and the construction work would be started in 1st quarter of 2019. The soil testing on the land that began in January 2018 has been completed through 300 boreholes made on various locations.

“The projects in Gwadar are conducted under a Framework agreement with NDRC and a MoU with MOFCOM and the Exim Bank. Unlike many of the other CPEC projects in Gwadar, the New Gwadar International Airport is not financed by a loan from China but through a Chinese Grant,” it said

LMAO Panjeet that’s some original content right there bro. it’s simple economics I wish China does invest in Pakistan, but Pakistanis also have to be sure the investment will pay off before the loan needs to be paid. It doesn’t seem like that’s always the case
