Within hours of releasing 10 U.S. sailors who apparently had drifted into their territorial waters, the Iranian government was using footage from the incident as a propaganda tool – including images of sailors on their knees with their hands behind their heads and a video showing a sailor apologizing.

“It was a mistake. That was our fault. And we apologize for our mistake,” the sailor said, in a brief state TV clip posted on Twitter by a journalist with Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.

Secretary of State John Kerry and others have cited the peaceful resolution as a “testament” to diplomacy and the new U.S.-Iran relationship, as they welcome Iran into the “community of nations.”

But the various images and clips of the sailors since circulated by Iranian media could prove embarrassing.

Images purported to show the sailors with their hands over their heads when they were arrested, and Iranian officials boarding their ships.

In the video clip of the apology, a sailor identified as the “commander” is being interviewed about his team’s actions. He apologizes, and also seems to acknowledge they drifted into Iranian territorial waters.

In response, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Wednesday that the department would assess whether the video is authentic. He noted images of prisoners are not supposed to be shown under the terms of the Geneva Convention.

But Toner said the initial assessment is that the sailors were treated well.

There were earlier indications such a video might exist.

Speaking with Fox News earlier Wednesday, a U.S. defense official could not completely rule out an apology at lower levels.

“If I say no and some iPhone video emerges from Iran with a 20-year-old sailor apologizing, I will look silly,” the official said.

However, a senior State Department official told Fox News that there was “no apology from Kerry” to the Iranians.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest also said Wednesday that a formal apology never occurred, and he wasn’t aware that one was ever even discussed.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., a Marine veteran, warned about the implications of the video apology from the sailor, though.

“In the Marine Corps, we were lectured about the strategic corporal—meaning any American can have an impact on American foreign policy. This apology—regardless of context—is going to be misused to diminish American power in the world and to bolster the terrorist state of Iran,” he told Fox News.

U.S. military officials at the Pentagon said the State Department was in the lead on negotiations with Iranians.

A Pentagon statement said the Navy would "investigate the circumstances that led to the Sailors' presence in Iran."

Officials are still uncertain of how Iranian forces managed to commandeer the two boats. A U.S. official told Fox News that a mechanical problem on at least one of the boats could not be ruled out, but could not explain how both boats were able to get underway in such a short time if one did have a propulsion issue, which would have caused it to stop running and drift into Iranian territorial waters.

According to a senior State Department official, the department first learned of the incident Tuesday at noon. Kerry spoke at least five times with his Iranian counterpart to secure the release of the crew.

According to the official, Kerry told the foreign minister, “If we were able to do this, we will make this into a good story.”

The U.S. Navy actually has come to the aid of Iranians in the Gulf before; in 2012, a Navy destroyer rescued an Iranian fishing boat taken over by suspected pirates.

Fox News’ Lucas Tomlinson and Jennifer Griffin contributed to this report.

footage from the incident as a propaganda tool

If Iranian sailors were arrested and its footage was shown in U.S media, it would be just different channels reporting a news and nothing else. If Iran shows the same footage, suddenly it's solely for propaganda.

Fox News, what else do you expect?

Valid point. Fox News essentially defines narrow minded, jingoistic journalism.

Same matter different narratives? Not a surprise. For news like ChemChina to acquire German machinery maker for $1b - Business - Chinadaily.com.cn I expect:

Background for another country to do this is called "surplus capital", for China is called "slowing economy".

Process for another country is called "acquisition", for China it's called "capital outflow".

Motive for another country to do this is called "strategic investment", for China it's called "stealing technology".

Result for another country when deals are done is called "globalized assets footprint", the same for China is called "collapse".

It is propaganda, the same when Iran captured the British sailors and held them for weeks, they would be released straight away or not even captured and as such no news story would ever come from it if it wasnt for propaganda purposes.

Still, tough shit really, sail in someone elses waters then tough luck.

The American soldiers were correct to apologize , that shows the respect they feel toward Iran, for drifting in her water..Their is nothing wrong with that...Just news like fox try to up the ante due to their pro Israel and anti Obama stand on the Iranian nuclear deal. Iran treated honorably the american sailors, if it was Iranian sailors that drifted in American waters, I doubt if they would have received in the same way...at least not the first hour..

It is obviously a propaganda. US doesn't need to make any to prove its prowess. Though I must say, it is very well played by Iran. If it can get away with humiliating US soldiers like that by exploiting a simple mechanical malfunction, it will be a win for Iran, but I doubt it can. I mean let alone the Republicans, even the Democrats would have a hard time digesting such a humiliation in front of the whole World. So from now on Iran should better tread lightly and avoid giving them an excuse.

I feel like Iran/US are trolling the world, we've never seen any direct confrontation between the two. US handed Iraq to Iran on silver platter, there isn't any tension besides for domestic consumption/propaganda purposes against Arabs. Iran wants to appear anti-US to justify it's hatred/wars against Arabs. Even if tomorrow it becomes economic/security partner of US it will still be barking left and right that Arabs are dogs of USA and they're 'resisting US'.

The only country that ever had tension with US in the region was Iraq under Saddam.

And you guys were screaming few weeks ago about how you had right to shoot down Russian plane which violated your airspace for less than 10 seconds. Now Iran didn't act stupid like Erdogan, we did what every country would do, arresting perpetrators and releasing them after it was proved they mistakenly entered our waters and also apologized.

That's what you do when foreign soldiers violate your maritime borders. We could also act stupid like Erdogan and kill all the sailors for no reason, but unfortunately, we don't have NATO to hide behind like Turkey in such cases, so we act based on our interests.

About U.S, they won't do anything, John Kerry already thanked Iran for cooperation on sailors issue, they do it again, they will be arrested again and it will happen every single time.

Yes, the problem is, Americans have a superiority complex, and they think everyone should treat them differently and seeing an American soldier rightfully apologize for doing something wrong makes them feel humiliated.

An American soldier apologizing in front of camera is not something you see everyday, so it's natural to see all the warmongers, GOP nutjobs and others being infuriated and barking constantly.

Oh please stop acting like an inbred moron. How can you even compare them? The two events were not even remotely similar. Turkey shot down an aircraft when it violated Turkey's airspace while it was bombing Turkmen towns. It wasn't their first violation and it wasn't our first warning.

Russian warplane violates Turkish airspace

Find and read some of your fellow Iranians comments in there if you can. They are hilarious

Irony, isn't it? Because after you downed Russian jet, Turkmen militias are having their arses handed to them and they are being killed at a much higher rate in Latakia now. You can ask yourself, did it worth it? Russian bombing on their positions has increased by at least 5 times since then.
Not Turkmen towns, but positions of Nusra, Ahrar al-Sham, JMWA and other terrorist groups who also happen to have ethnic Turkmen terrorists. Stop acting like Turkey gives a shit about Turkmen civilians. Or maybe it cares, but only for those Salafi nutjob Turkmens who are fighting under Nusra flag. Iraqi Turkmens apparently were not humans in Turkey's eyes, because they were Shia.

When ISIS besieged Turkmen towns (primarily Amerli) with many women and children in Iraq last year to kill every last one of them, it was Iran that helped save them, while Erdogan was busy letting thousands of foreigners who were flooding Turkish border a pass to join ISIS.

You ain't fooling anyone buddy.

You are helping these:

No, it is not propaganda.

Even in the case of Royal Marines, it was the Marines who were eager to give themselves up to Iranian military. They themselves craved to surrender:

Actually we used to see it a lot when AQ or Taliban took them captive. Anyways these moves are funny. Iran is taking pride out of normal routine violations. And Shia's online are bragging about it on Al-Arabiya pages, lol. You guys try hard proving you are 'anti-US, anti-imperialist'. Doesn't work when you're cooperating in three countries and never got in direct confrontation. Again not that anyone wants that, we just want you to stop exaggerating things which you used to later bash Arabs as being 'US puppets'. Even though Arabs are only ones who ever got direct war with US in the region. :D

Come, talk to us when American or NATO forces surrender to those "puppet Arabs" you yourself mentioned. Bring in the evidence showing them kneeling, disarming and apologizing to those "puppet Arabs" of yours. Because till now what we have seen is that, the "puppet Arabs" of yours have had their behinds handed to them whenever they confronted US, NATO or Israel. In fact those "puppet Arabs" you mentioned hold the very unique distinction of being the first ever human beings who surrendered and submitted themselves to a robot. An American robot. Forget about real American soldiers.

Nowadays, these "puppet Arabs" of yours do not even feel the need for such glory. They have just accepted their fate and submitted themselves to the Master. Such is their story.

Look at the face of those american sailors  I always thought americans are mighty and going to kick asses, looks like they got humbled here.
