Famous French author, poet and Politician, Alphonse Marie Lamartine, in his well-known work of 1854, Histoire de la Turquie, observes: “if greatness of purpose, smallness of means, and astounding results are the three criteria of human genius, who could dare to compare any great man in modern history with Muhammad? The most famous men created arms, laws and empires only. They founded, if anything at all, no more than material powers which often crumbled away before their eyes. This man moved not only armies, legislations, empires, peoples and dynasties, but millions of men in one-third of the then inhabited world; and more than that, he moved the altars, the gods, the religions, the ideas, the beliefs and the souls. On the basis of a Book, every letter of which has become law, he created a spiritual nationality which blended together peoples of every tongue and of every race. Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational beliefs, a founder of twenty terrestrial empires and one spiritual empire. Of all standards by which human greatness can be measured, we may well ask ... is there any man greater than Mohammed?”
It was about four thousand years ago, Prophet of Allah, Abraham and Ismael (PBUT) worked day and night to rebuild the holy Kabah, the house of Almighty God. During this construction, they humbly requested the Almighty to accept their service and submitted as glorious Quran narrates in Sura Al-Baqra, ‘Our Lord accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing. Our Lord, make us Muslims [in submission] to You and from our descendants a Muslim nation [in submission] to You. And show us our rites and accept our repentance. Indeed, You are the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.’ Quran Sura AlBaqra 127-129.
Over two millenniums after this prayer, travelers from Macca met an eremite in the desert. Eremites were considered to be judicious and the Arabs often asked their counsel. The Traveler from Macca stopped to speak with him. The eremite asked where the origin of the travelers. When they replied that they were from Macca, he told them that God would soon send a prophet, who would be from amongst them. Maccians asked the name of this prophet and the eremite responded that he would be called Muhammad (PBUH) and that he would be leader to a new way of life.
In the meantime, in Macca, Aminah (PBUH), although distressed by the death of her husband, was waiting the birth of her child. She had some splendid dreams during the period of her pregnancy. On one occurrence it was as if a great light were shining out of her, and on another she heard a voice telling her that she would have a boy and that his name would be Muhammad. She never forgot that voice but she told no one about it.
On Monday,year 570 A.D, the twelfth day of Rabi ul-Awal, Aminah (PBUH) gave birth to a son. Allah sends mankind various cyphers when one of His chosen Prophets is born. On that twelfth day of Rabi ul-Awal many such cyphers were witnessed. Some were seen by the Jewish scholars who had read in their scriptures of a coming Prophet. One of these learned Jewish men in Yasrab (Madina), saw an appearance of a dazzling new star on horizon which he had never seen before. He gathered the people and while indicating at the star, expressed that a Prophet must have been born. That same night another Jew was passing by theDarulnadvah, the meeting place of the leaders of Quraish in Macca. He asked them if a baby boy had just been born and told them that if this was true, this would be the Prophet of the Arab nation.
Both Muslim and Christian scholars agree that the Prophet Muhammed’s life and accomplishments, beginning with his birth in Mecca around 570 AD, are the foundation of the entire Muslim epoch. His experiences and achievements shape the spiritual, political and ethical vision of the Muslims and constitute a symbol enlightening the meaning of existence itself.
Renowned American Philosopher, Scientist and Historian, John William Draper in his well-known book of 1863, A History of the Intellectual Development of Europe, observes: “Four years after the death of Justinian, 569 A.D., was born at Makkah, in Arabia, the man who, of all men, has exercised the greatest influence upon the human race.” Sir William Muir, a Scottish Orientalist and a colonial administrator in his controversial book, Life of Mahomit adds: “Our authorities, all agree in ascribing to the youth of Mohammad a modesty of deportment and purity of manners rare among the people of Makkah... The fair character and honorable bearing of the unobtrusive youth won the approbation of his fellow-citizens; and he received the title, by common consent, of Al-Ameen, the Trustworthy.”
Almighty Allah narrates in glorious Quran about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in the following words in Sura Al-Anbiya verse, "Wama arsalnaka illa rahmatal lil Aalameen" translation ‘And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the universe’. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) did not voice or campaign the cause of any specific race or ethnicity, but stood up for the whole humanity irrespective of caste, creed, race, color, language or geographical barriers. The divine Message he preached was universal, transgressing all obstacles whether artificial or otherwise. A Message so comprehensive and wide-ranging that it not only transformed the era in which it was asserted, but even today its eternal beauty has lost none of the unique charisma and continues its thoughtful appeal to the human mind. George Bernard Shaw an Irish writer and a co-founder of the London School of Economics said about him in 1936: “He must be called the Savior of Humanity. I believe that if a man like him were to assume the sovereignty of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems in a way that would bring it much needed peace and happiness”.
What can a meek writer like me can write about a personality who altered the fate of the biosphere and saved the mankind. He was indeed a perfect man, so comprehensive that even his hecklers and opponents could not find the smallest flaw in his radiant personality. He was by far the most remarkable man that ever set foot on this earth. He discoursed a religion, originated a state, built a nation, laid down an ethical code, and initiated numerous social and political reforms. He established a powerful and dynamic society to practice and represent his teachings and completely transformed the domains of human thought and behavior for all times to come.
