basically a shock wave travels through the Prince Ruperts Drop and reaches the tail where it gets concentrated and initiates the crack in the lattice and the this failure travels to the head at a speed the speed of sound but it is much faster than the speed of the sound in air.

These are high speed cameras which are commercially available but I have used cameras with 10s of millions of frames per second but those are not available for commercial use.
