Casualties in troops-BIFF clash climb to 9 | Nation, News, The Philippine Star | philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines - A female civilian was among those who were killed during the encounter between the military and rogue Moro rebels in Maguindanao last Tuesday.

Army reports said a certain Baikong Mohammad Mala was killed in the crossfire during the clash between state forces and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Datu Saudi Ampatuan town.

Mala is the ninth fatality of the gun battle, which also left eight members of the BIFF dead.

Col. Dickson Hermoso, spokesman of the Army’s 6th division, said police investigations had revealed that the bullet that hit the victim came from the side of the rebels.

The local government and the Army are now providing assistance to the victim's family.

Hermoso said the situation in Maguindanao has returned to normal save for the floods caused by heavy rains.

“Perhaps they (BIFF) are resting and are licking their wounds. But they may attack again in a few days,” he said.

The military has deployed additional troops to secure the national roads, vital installations and civilian communities in the area.

The Office of Civil Defense - Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao said the firefight displaced an undetermined number of residents in Guindulungan town. Local disaster management offices are still assessing the extent of damage and losses due to the incident.

Eight BIFF members were killed in a clash with state forces last Tuesday after the rebels tried to seize a cargo truck and petroleum tanker in Guindulungan

A certain Edgardo Gamalo, the driver of the tanker, was hurt during the hour-long encounter.

The rebels reportedly blocked a part of the Cotabato-General Santos Highway going through Guindulungan and planted improvised explosive devices along the road.

Authorities said the explosives were meant to pressure businessmen who refuse to give in to the BIFF’s extortion demands.

Security forces are now conducting pursuit operations against the rebels.

The BIFF broke away from the MILF due to differences over the peace talks with the government.

The BIFF has criticized the MILF leadership for supposedly abandoning its original stance of independence. Officials said the BIFF”s recent activities were attempts to sabotage the peace talks.

Gov’t forces repel Moro rebel attack in North Cotabato

KIDAPAWAN CITY, North Cotabato—Moro rebels attacked a government-backed militia detachment in Midsayap, North Cotabato, on Wednesday but withdrew when Army soldiers and police arrived to reinforce the beleaguered militiamen who had engaged the rebels in an hour-long firefight.
Midsayap police chief Superintendent Reynante de los Reyes said a 50-strong band of Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters attacked the militia detachment in Barangay (village) Baliki with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades but the outnumbered militiamen fought back and exchanged fire with the attackers for about an hour until the Army soldiers and police arrived past 9 p.m.
No casualties were reported on either side.
Barangay Baliki is the last village of Midsayap before the municipality of Datu Piang in Maguindanao. Datu Piang and Midsayap are separated by the Rio Grande de Mindanao, which the rebels used in attacking farmers in Barangay Baliki.
As members of the Midsayap PNP and elements of the Army’s 40th Infantry Battalion arrived in Barangay Baliki, the BIFF rebels fled aboard motorboats and crossed toward Datu Piang.
It was the second such attack on Barangay Baliki by members of the BIFF since Monday, when they fired on militiamen and farmers but withdrew quickly when government forces arrived.
In last Monday’s attack, as the rebels fled Barangay Baliki, they stormed Barangay Polomoguin, also in Midsayap, killing one farmer and taking away eight carabaos and two motorbikes from farmers.
The rebels also left one improvised explosive device.
Abu Misry Mama, speaking for the BIFF, a breakaway faction of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, admitted their group was involved in the Barangay Baliki attacks which he said were in retaliation for alleged harassment by militiamen.
The Midsayap incident came a day after more than 100 BIFF forces fired on a fuel tanker and harassed an Army camp in Datu Piang, triggering a battle in which eight BIFF guerrillas were reportedly killed.
The fighting forced the Army to shut down portions of the Cotabato-Isulan highway as soldiers cleared the roadside of bombs left by the armed men.
Delos Reyes urged people living between the towns of Midsayap and Datu Piang to remain vigilant. He urged them to quickly inform the police about the presence of armed men in the area to prevent a repeat of Monday’s and Wednesday’s attacks.

(UPDATE) 6 killed, 25 wounded in Cotabato blast | Headlines, News, The Philippine Star | philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - At least six people, including a policeman, died and 25 others were wounded in a roadside blast in Cotabato City this afternoon, the military said.

The explosion occurred at around 4:15 p.m. at the corner of Maniara street and Sinsuat avenue, a busy residential and commercial area, in Cotaboto city. The bomb was placed in a motorycle that was parked at the commercial area, said Custodio Parcon, commander of the military's Marine Battalion Landing Team.

Parcon said the blast also damaged four vehicles and three motorcycles. The investigation is ongoing, and no suspects have been found, he added.

Meanwhile, spokesman of the 6th Infantry Division Dickson Hermoso said two vehicles caught fire after the explosion.

The explosion came after the US State Department issued a global travel advisory due to potential attacks by the Al Qaeda network and its affiliate groups.

On July 9, suspected members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement bombed a cafe along Sinsuat avenue, leaving the cafe's manager dead and three others injured.

Philippine Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma assured that the authorities will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

"We condemn the use of violence to hurt and kill our citizens who were just doing peacefully their daily activities," he said in a text message to reporters.

He said that the government will hold accountable those responsible in the criminal activity.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public affairs office chief Ramon Zagala said "We have deployed units to conduct area security and to cordon the periphery. We call on the people to stay calm and cooperate with the government authorities for the prevention of similar incidents."

"This bombing shows that terrorists have no respect to human life and property. The goal is to sow fear. We must come together as a people to collectively fight and condemn this act," Zagala added.

COTABATO CITY, Philippines—Around 2,000 people have fled their homes in North Cotabato following hostilities between government forces and members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, North Cotabato Governor Emmylou Mendoza said.
Mendoza said fighting has been going on in Barangay Pagangan in the municipality of Aleosan town since Friday night.
Mendoza said soldiers and policemen were securing the Aleosan portion of the Davao-Cotabato highway to ensure the safety of motorists.
BIFF forces are known to target motorists during clashes with the military.

Sporadic fighting in Southern Philippines continue

NORTH COTABATO (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 11, 2013) – Sporadic fighting continue in the southern Philippines between security and Moro rebel forces as the exodus of civilians fleeing the deadly clashes is also mounting.

At least 4 rebels from the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement and two soldiers were killed in the fighting over the weekend, according to Col. Dickson Hermoso, a spokesman for the 6th Infantry Division in central Mindanao.

He said the fighting erupted in North Cotabato’s Aleosan town after rebel forces attacked troops in the villages of Tubak and Pagangan.

“Our operations against the ATG continue to protect the civilians and communities from terrorism,” he told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

ATG is the acronym for Auxiliary Threat Group which refers to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement and its army of so-called freedom fighters.

According to the Mindanao Human Rights Action Center, most of those who fled their villages have sought safe refuge in government schools and other areas far away from the fighting.

It said village officials reported that cannon shells landed in civilian areas in the village of Lagunde in the neighboring town of Pikit.

The rebels were largely blamed for the spate of attacks and a recent roadside bombing that wounded 7 soldiers in the town of Shariff Saydona Mustapha in Maguindanao province.

The soldiers, who belong to the 2nd Mechanized Infantry Battalion, were in a truck and travelling in the village of Nabundas when the bomb went off.

The rebels were mostly former members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front fighting for independence in the troubled South. The MILF, the country’s largest Muslim rebel group is now negotiating peace with Manila in an effort to end decades of bloody fighting in Mindanao. (Mark Navales)

Mindanao has a serious problem with all these "militia" groups springing up. Basically the Philippine government armed Christian Filipino settlers with guns and allowed them to form these militia groups to allegedly "defend" themselves against Moro groups like MILF and MNLF. These militias operate out of government control and are autonomous. The only thing that this militia thing has helped grow, is more clashes and disputes between clans, more violence, more killing. Etc.

Basically, no peace deal is over going to happen, nor is the violence going to stop, since there are literally tons of militia factions, clan disputes, warring, unless someone is going to make them give up their weapons. Literally hundreds of clashes and killings occur every year between clan militias over disputes that would normally be settled in court in western countries.
