JALALABAD: A new bout of fighting erupted on Monday in a border area between Afghanistan and Pakistan, the latest indication of a sharp deterioration in relations between the important US allies.
Pakistan is seen as vital in bringing stability to Afghanistan as most Western forces prepare to withdraw by the end of next year.
The United States and other powers involved in Afghanistan have been trying to promote cooperation between the Asian neighbours, who have a history of mistrust.
Afghan officials said the clash on Monday erupted after Pakistani troops tried to repair a gate on the border, in the Afghan district of Goshta, where last week an Afghan border policeman was killed in an exchange of fire.
It is unclear if there were any casualties on Monday.
“This morning’s clash began after the Pakistani side continued to repair the gate, which was damaged in the previous fighting,” said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, a spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar province.
Afghanistan says the gate at Pakistan’s Gursal military post encroaches on its territory. The Nangarhar governor has spoken several times to Pakistani consular officials to tell them not to repair the gate, Abdulzai said.
Pakistani military spokespersons were not immediately available for comment.
Afghanistan and Pakistan have had testy relations since Pakistan was formed in 1947, at the end of British colonial rule over India. Afghanistan has never officially accepted the border between them.
Pakistan helped the Taliban take power in Afghanistan in the 1990s. Many Afghan leaders say Pakistan is still helping the militants, seeing them as a tool to counter the influence of its old rival, India, in Afghanistan.
Pakistan denies helping the Taliban and says it wants peace and stability in its western neighbour.
But in an indication of how bad ties have become, Afghan President Hamid Karzai, without naming Pakistan, last week called on the Taliban to fight Afghanistan’s neighbour, where, he said, plots were made against Afghanistan.
Earlier last week, troops from the two sides exchanged fire for about five hours.
Karzai has ordered officials to take “immediate action” to remove the gate and other Pakistani military installations near the Durand Line, the 1893 British-mandated border.
Afghanistan maintains that activity by either side along the Durand Line must be approved by both countries.

Afghan-Pakistani clashes flare for second time in days

JALALABAD: Cross-border clashes broke out Monday between Afghan and Pakistani security forces for the second time in days, escalating tensions between Kabul and Islamabad, officials said.

Ties between the fractious neighbours have become increasingly strained despite renewed efforts last month from US Secretary of State John Kerry to get them to work more closely on peace efforts in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are in dispute over a site where Pakistan has tried to construct a gate on what Afghan officials say is Afghan territory. Clashes last Wednesday in the same spot killed an Afghan guard and wounded two Pakistanis. The porous border is unmarked in places and a key battleground in the fight against Taliban violence plaguing both countries.

"Pakistan shamelessly, again today, tried to construct those buildings. This action led to fighting," said Ahmad Zia Abdulzai, spokesman for the government in eastern Afghan province Nangarhar.

Abdulzai said the fighting involved heavy and light weapons, but refused to say who started it, when asked.

A senior Afghan official in Kabul confirmed the incident.

Pakistani officials blamed Afghans for starting the clashes. "Afghan troops opened unprovoked fire from across the border at our post... They fired mortars and automatic weapons," one Pakistan official told AFP on condition of anonymity. "Our troops responded with retaliatory fire. There have not been reports of any casualties so far. The exchange of fire continues at intervals," a second official said, also speaking on condition of anonymity.

Afghanistan and Pakistan are both US allies in its war on terror. But Kabul accuses Islamabad of playing a double game in supporting Taliban insurgent attacks on US and Afghan troops.

Pakistan denies the allegations and is locked in its own battle against Pakistani Taliban. Pakistan, which backed Afghanistan's 1996-2001 Taliban regime, is seen by the West as having a central role in negotiating a political settlement with Taliban insurgents who shelter in Pakistan's border districts.

All thanks to Kiyani the gutless....i remember saying that about Kiyani some time back and a thinktank on defence.pk asked me "how is he gutless" that was before Salala attack If I remember correctly ....So I am sure that Kiyannis apologists have found their answers.

Pakistani President 'Asif Ali Zardari' don't mind. and neither does any political party!

I wonder does democracy means hate pak army jawans?

Can some one ask the popular democracy proponents, what will happen to civilians if Pak army stand down?

This is getting ridiculous now, these Afghans need to be put in their place...

A statement came from FO in the morning that Durand Line issue is finished and now they start attacking our posts, come on COAS, stop smoking cigars and give a reply...need to pound their ***** with jets and Cobras and teach them a lesson.

Afghan news channel are exaggerating the figure

The Afghan and Pakistani forces have resumed clashes in Ghosta district of eastern Nangarhar province early Monday, local officials said.

The clashes broke out today morning, when the Pakistani military forces tried to rebuild the gate of the check-post in Goshta district of Nangarhar, an Afghan border commander in eastern Afghanistan said.

Afghan border officials said that 30 Pakistani forces have been killed or wounded in the clashes. There are no exact figures of how many Pakistani forces were killed and how many got wounded.

The Afghan forces have destroyed a Pakistani military tank and removed two of Pakistani check-posts during the clashes, the Afghan commander said.

The fighting is still going on between the two sides in the area using heavy weapons.

Any casualty reported?

No casualty being reported anywhere, I checked as well, nothing except a few shrapnel injuries.

We all know how these Afghans manipulate figures.

How so??? :what: Pakistan should concentrate on bringing stability within its own country first, considering the instability reigning there at present, what with the TTP creating havoc and ethnic clashes on the rise.

Where did you see the joke?

So it wasn't a joke. You are a moderator. Normally, great wisdom is expected from people like you.

Please do not take it personal, but I find your comment very childish.

Pakistan is no position to go all out. The Durand line would be demolished which would be fatal. This is what Afghans want.

And Pakistan cannot exercise anything against the NATO forces.

There is already a commission on Kargil made by the President Asif ALi Zardari.
Why are you suggesting things which may will lead to another commission on Durrand line?
Let Asif Ali Zardari approve your proposed pounding, any action in absence of Asif Ali Zardari's approval may lead to arrest of Kiyani and all generals and officers involved.

Whereas, transit aid to Indian contractors in Afghanistan, clearly hints the official policy of Asif Ali zardari regime.
In circumstances like this only idiots would heed your advice of pounding without proper constitutional backing and elaborative description of such constitution by judiciary.

IMO, those attacks on Pak army can very well be the execution stage of what President Asif Ali Zardari, term as teaching Pak army a lesson.
We all know how main character Hussain Haqqani was protected by Pakistani courts and interior ministry.
