Police said the couple came under assault near TSC intersection at Dhaka University around 9:30pm on Thursday.

Witnesses said they were on a rickshaw returning from the Amar Ekushey Book Fair when two attackers stopped it, dragged them onto the footpath and started hacking them.

They were rushed to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared Avijit dead during an emergency surgery, its police outpost Inspector Mozzamel Haque told bdnews24.com.

DMCH casualty department’s Residential Surgeon Riaz Morshed also confirmed bdnews24.com about Avijit Roy’s death.

Islamist zealots have been threatening Avijit, a bioengineer and a naturalised US citizen, for his active campaign against Islamist radicals.

Avijit has been a regular bdnews24.com columnist and the founder of popular blog Mukto-mona.

He is the son of well-known physicist Ajay Roy who has taught at Dhaka University for a long time.

Avijit had suffered a deep gash on his head during the assault and Banna lost a finger and suffered cut wounds.

She was still under treatment at DMCH.
Two machetes, Banna’s severed finger and a bag that possibly belonged to the assailants were recovered from the scene, Shahbagh police Sub-Inspector Sohel Rana said.

He told bdnews24.com: “We found some old folded newspapers inside the bag along with some other things. It seems the machetes were wrapped with the newspapers.”

CID officials collected the evidence from the crime scene, he added.

One of the witnesses, a teashop owner in that area, told bdnews24.com that both assailants after carrying out the attack had dumped their weapons at the scene.
Then one of them ran towards TSC and the other Suhrawardy Udyan, according to the witness.

Avijit's blogger friends say he was possibly trapped – some bloggers had invited him to a book fair event.

Police are investigating the lead to track down the culprits.

Avijit Roy is well known for his books ‘Biswaser Virus’ (Virus of Faith) and ‘Sunyo theke Mahabiswa’ (From Vacuum to the Great World).

Two of his recent titles had been launched at the ongoing Ekushey Book Fair.

His writing and blogging had evoked the ire of fanatics and he had been regularly threatened.

Thursday’s attack bore a striking similarity to the one on legendary writer Humayun Azad in February 2004.

Azad was also returning to home from the Ekushey Book Fair when he was hacked with machetes by radical militants. He later died in Germany while undergoing treatment.

Militants also hacked blogger Ahmed Rajib Haider to death in a similar attack near his home at Dhaka’s Mirpur in February 2013.

That was barely 10 days after the secular platform Ganajagaran Mancha started its Shahbagh-based agitation.

Islamist radicals had attacked other secular bloggers like Ashraful Alam and Asif Mohiuddin after the Shahbagh agitation polarised opinions in Bangladesh.

They were demanding capital punishment for war criminals and a ban on communal parties like the Jamaat-e-Islami.

Fanatic blogger Farabi Shafiur Rahman had issued death threats demanding that Rokomari.com, an online shopping portal, stop selling books of Avijit Roy.

Police had arrested Farabi in connection with Rajib Haider’s murder, but he managed to secure bail later.

Blogger Avijit Roy was hacked to death by unidentified persons on Dhaka University campus at about 9:30pm on Thursday.

Attackers also hacked and wounded Avijit’s wife Rafida Ahmed Banya who was accompanying him at the time of attack.

Police said a group of men attacked the couple and hacked them with cleavers at TSC’s Bat Tala area. It was reported that attackers mostly hit on their heads.

Seriously wounded, they were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Avijit, who is also a photojournalist, died at 10:30pm, confirmed DMCH police outpost in charge inspector Mozammel Haque.

DMCH emergency unit duty doctor Sohel Ahmed told NTV Online that excessive blood loss and internal brain injury caused death of Avijit. ‘There were at least nine signs of stab on his head,’ he added.

He also said that Rafida Ahmed’s condition was stable.

Avijit is the founder of Bangla blog ‘Mukto Mona’ and is a writer. He is the son of former Dhaka University physics professor Ajoy Roy. The professor visited DMCH after the incident.

Dhaka University acting proctor Amzad Ali, during his visit at DMCH, said they had come to know that the writer used to receive threats from different quarters for his write-ups.

‘He might have been killed for the write-ups,’ he said and suspected that the killers of popular writer Humayun Azad might have been from same quarter.

During a visit, it was found that the police officials and Criminal Investigation Department officials was securing the crime scene.

While contacted, Ramna Division police assistant commissioner Shibli Noman said they were suspecting that the blogger might have been killed for his write-ups in blogs against militancy groups.

‘There are similarities between the case of Humayun Azad and blogger Rajib killing with this case. We have recovered two cleavers and a bag from the spot,’ he said.

The official however said that the police was yet to arrest any suspects in connection with the killing.

Avijit Roy is used to live with his wife in the USA. He was popular for his widely read blog ‘Mukto Mona’ of which he was the founder too. There are about a dozen books written by him.

Earlier on February 27, 2004, Humayun Azad was killed by the assailants at DU area when he was going home after visiting Ekushey Book Fair.

Later on February 15, 2013, blogger Rajib Haider was killed in Pallabi on the same way allegedly for his write-ups in the blog.

Protesting the attack on the couple, Pragatishil Chhatra Jote, a union of left leaning student organisation have announced a gathering in front of Aparajeyo Bangla in Dhaka University at about 10:00 am on Friday.

Meanwhile, the teachers of the university will form a human chain in front of Central Shaheed MInar premises at about 11:00 am on Friday.

Bangladesh professor 'hacked to death' by suspected militants

  • Suspected Islamic militants have hacked to death a university professor in western Bangladesh, several years after he led a push to ban students wearing full-face veils, police said Sunday.

Police have arrested at least 20 people for questioning over the murder near Rajshahi University in the west of the Muslim-majority country where the victim was a professor of sociology, a senior officer said.

The victim, Shafiul Islam, followed the folk sect Baul, popular in parts of western Bangladesh, whose members call themselves followers of humanism rather than a particular religion.

The murder has triggered protests in the capital Dhaka and in Rajshahi where mainly students have marched through university campuses and boycotted classes since news of the killing broke on Saturday.

"We are working on several possible motives behind the killing," Rajshahi police commissioner Mahbubur Rahman told AFP, adding that the "leading" one was that the murder was carried out by Islamist militants.

He said some 20 people have been arrested but declined to say which religious or political groups they were connected to.

A previously unknown Islamist group calling itself the Ansar al Islam Bangladesh-2 claimed responsibility for the killing, after opening a Facebook page late on Saturday.

"Our Mujahideens have today murdered an apostate who had prohibited female students from wearing veils in his department and the classrooms," a posting said.

"Beware all the anti-Islamic apostates and atheists!"

The Facebook page quoted a local news report from 2010 saying the professor forced female students to remove their veils before entering his classroom, when he headed the sociology department.

Bangladesh is the world's third largest Muslim-majority nation with the vast majority following a moderate form of the religion. Hardline Islam has gained strength in recent years, but killings carried out in the name of Islam are rare.

Militant Islamists attacked a famous writer in 2004, and killed a well-known atheist blogger in February last year. In August, militants were accused of killing a moderate cleric who hosted popular shows on TV.

Sirajul Islam, also a sociology professor, said the slain teacher was not anti-Islam but was against full-face veils.

"He moved to ban full-face veils from the classrooms and examination halls. He thought full-face veils could be used to cheat in the examinations and it was impossible to identify a student who wears a full-face veil," he told AFP.

Rajshahi University had been a stronghold of the student activist wing of the country's largest Islamist party before police launched a crack down on the group, after the secular government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took over in 2009.

He was a self-confessed anti-Islamist/ anti-religion guy. In our society these thoughts hurt people - and some obviously loose control of their senses.BD is no place for nastiq atheists.

And then you get pissed with the Hindus get angry and attack any Muslim who offends them. :woot:

Since when did atheists attack you?

Anti-Islamist means those who are against radicals, which even the common Bangladeshis are (the non-Jamaati types).

bhai jaan, islam is not about prayers and rituals, and if any "muslim" wants to be obsessed with such things, he has hinduism to convert to.

Oh really! Then just stop being defensive about whether Al Qaeda, Taliban, Boko Haram, ISIS, etc. are true Islam or not, just declare that this is Islam for you and be done with it. Just end this duplicity.

Avijit Roy was not the first to be hacked down to death, and with this kind of mentality he won't be the last either.

Sorry to say, but the secular and liberal Bangladesh seems to be confined to an elite minority in the cities only, rests are just bloody savages.

Our pagan cousins from WB are talking as if they already unearthed who the assailants are.

Dhaka university is the backyard of awami chapati leaguers and not to mention presence of plain cloths intelligence units and huge multi-stage security around the book fair. Not to mention jungle law prevails in BD currently where awami chapati leaguers are above law. U need mutant X-men powers like awami chapti leaguers to go scot free after killing someone from such high security zones . Don't u think u WB pagans , given your bigoted views on muslims, r a little too ignorant to be commenting on BD matters? @The Unnamed @DRAY

I have no better word for those who keep hacking people to death and those who support or justify such dasterdly acts.

The R&AW station chief for Dhaka must be held accountable for this. He is in charge of the governance of Bangladesh and should have known about this attack. What measures were taken by R&AW to prevent this?
