You were expecting to travel with a sword in your cabin baggage.. Please tell me this was a sarcastic post (though I fail to see the pun) :azn:

No. Real. I got back from Turkey with that Ottoman relic in my little bag. It wasn't a weapon. I even think there wasn't even a sharp blade. It was meant to be a showpiece. But it was made of metal, which made it go bleep.

"What is your last name?"

"Khan"

"Please step aside for random security screening."

True story.

For all these instances, and generally for immigration checks, please remember that the officials are just trying to do their jobs. Being adversarial never helps. Put yourselves in their position and see how difficult it really is to differentiate the nutcases from the regular folks. With that in mind, being courteous, short and to the point with "yes", "no" and "correct" being most of the limited answers (or simple, short sentences) will make everything quite smooth.

Please ignore these comments if you do not agree with them.

Excellent advise to the point. I hope people will follow it to have a pleasant experience while travelling through different interantional airports. One should also take into account their own body language when talking to immigration officers and try to read their body language as well. They are trained in this field to separate from liars and truthfull speaking individuals.

sounds frustrating...actually i was expecting similar treatment from US immigration when i came to the States...luckily i was spared for the most part. They did ask me what I was doing in Pakistan --i just told them ''hello....i lived there. I intend to study here in the US and have the papers to prove it. I look forward to my stay in the US'' and we both just smiled, stamped, and i was on my way.

regardless of who they are, just always answer the questions honestly and be direct. Dont say too much or too little. Look them in the eye, and look cooperative.

there would be no reason for them to act unprofessionally. And if they do act unprofessionally, take their badge ID number and find out where you can file complaints. For whatever its worth, that's the best way to approach it.

I think the trick is to seem indifferent. Look them right in the eye if they ask you a question. Don't act shifty.

Once while boarding a flight from Dubai to Manchester, an immigration officer (Indian origin) stopped me and after looking at my passport color. Asked me some very ridiculous questions like what is the purpose of your visit, when were you there last time, where would you stay. The questions were even more irritating because he could see my student visa very clearly.

I got so irritated and shouted "I know why are you questioning me; You being an Indian couldn't let go this opportunity"

And guess what, He was shocked and embarassed

Here you were totally wrong and you should learn that.. I being Hindu (No religious issue), Software professional (thousands fly everyday in US) and being on H1B have to answer all the qns you mentioned above. This is routine checkup and you should simply reply those rather than blaming on ethnicity.

in any country, such a situation does justify a check and some questioning....relics or contemporary, doesnt make a difference. If it can be perceived as a weapon, you would be questioned.

you arent banned from transporting such things, however they must be declared and there is certain protocol involved

best way to humiliate him is to expose how stupid he is, for over-looking things he is supposed to see on his own (without you having to remind him)

next time, also take his name and badge number (or other credential).... :)

I would strongly urge NOT to do these things, except making a note of name/badge ONLY if needed. Being adversarial or trying to establish superiority never helps.

The rest is up to you guys/gals. :)

Happens to me all the time , and I told that f er , you holding me because of my religious name aren't ya

good and coopetative behaviour with imigration officials always pays.
once i was stopped by an indian babu i/ trinidad. he was cheif of imigration there and wont lre me go....i was on a transit to florida and had two days stay in trinidad..but the babu wont beleive me on anything..not even my visa..
i did not argue with him..kept my cool and reied to all his questions honestly and with documentary proof..
i was escorted out of the airport by a more sensible official when the babu went for his break.
this nice official also an ethnic indian was there all the time listening to the rediculous questions his boss was asking me..and my good answers...
he got fed up and helped me out of the airport on his responsibility.
so good behaviour pays.

How many of these security experts can differentiate a Sikh from a Muslim ?

i think you should have your eyes checked....sikh wear the turban 24/7 they also wear this small turban which has a smalle grenade on top.....muslims hardly wear turban....other thing is beard....muslims dont have their board going all over...they have a code to follow the moustache shoudlnt touch the upper lip and stufff.......sikhs on the other hand never shave or cut ther hairs....including underarms and private parts
