30 Filipino police commandos killed in clash with rebels

MILF rebs to get pardon
By MST News | Feb. 01, 2015 at 12:01am

THE government admitted on Saturday that the agreement it signed with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front on Friday includes a pardon and amnesty provision that may include guerillas who were behind the killing of 44 police commandos who were out to arrest Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir.

MILF rebs to get pardon - Manila Standard Today

So i heard from Japanese military sources that there was a "bounty" on the head of the Malaysian vermin named Zulfkifli bin Hir. Was it not worth some $5-20 million ? Was this the reason why Manila dispatched the PNP to 'arrest' this man? And this man was killed in the shooting , afterall. Is this the reason why Purisima left for Saipan this week? To collect the bounty?

If this is truth to this rumor , then there needs to be radical organizational change. First of all, why send the PNP to do the Army's work. Afterall, Maguindanao is close to the 1st Infantry Division of the Philippine Army. They should have been sent rather than civilian PNP forces. Secondarily, this incident reveals a clear weak coordination between branches of the military. These PNP personnel should have been given air support, provided support by mechanized infantry.

That's my own opinion, which reflects a considerable amount of what is being discussed in Japanese defense forums.

And SHTF.... it appears to be a three-sided gunfight

Ampatuan private army took part in Mamasapano clash – MILF commander
February 3, 2015 10:49pm

The Ampatuan family's private army also took part in the Mamasapano clash in Maguindanao, where 44 Special Action Force commandos were killed, an MILF commander has claimed.

In a Tuesday report on GMA 7 news program “24 Oras”, the MILF commander, whose identity was hidden, said it was the Ampatuan's privately armed group (PAG) that used a .30 caliber machinegun on the police officers.

"'Yung PAGs na kasama doon, identified talaga. 'Yung isa pangalan Kagi Saudi Ampatuan, kaparyente 'yan ng mga Ampatuan, kapatid ng dating mayor ng Sheriff Aguak," said the commander.

["The PAG (Private Armed Groups) that were involved there were easily identified. One of them who is named Kagi Saudi Ampatuan is a blood-relative of the Ampatuan (clan); he is a sibling of the former mayor of Sheriff Aguak."]

The MILF commander also said that it was the private army who stole the SAF's weapons. "Mismo, nakita namin na 'yung Bushmaster na nakuha nila, apat tapos tatlong Glock," he added.
["In fact, we saw the Bushmaster (rifle) they have acquired, four them at least along with three Glock (pistols)"]

The Ampatuans have become infamous for the November 2009 Maguindanao massacre, in which 58 people, including 32 journalists, were executed.

At least 198 people, including primary suspect Andal Ampatuan Jr., are currently being tried for the massacre.

MILF main force

Mamasapano Mayor Benzar Ampatuan has denied that his family was responsible for the Mamasapano clash.

"Ang pagkakaalam ko, MILF 'yung main force na talagang nakalaban ng blocking force natin," Ampatuan said.
["As far as I know, it is the MILF's main force that our blocking force encountered and clashed with."]

He added that his family was not in good terms with the MILF.

Nevertheless, Maguindanao 2nd Disctrict Representative Zajid Mangudadatu wanted private armies investigated for the Mamasapano clash.

"'Yung sa ganyan klaseng pagpatay, brutal, pwede ho nating sabihin na 'yan 'yung mga walang ideology na mga tao. Kasi kung sa MILF may ideology din 'yan, kahit papaano. Pero ganitong brutal, iimbestigahang mabuti kung meron pa bang sangkot na ibang grupo sa pagpatay sa ating mga kapulisan," Mangudadatu explained.
[That kind of method of killing is brutal, we can say that they are the kind who has no ideology backing because even the MILF has some ideology backing. But this kind of brutality, we should carefully investigate if there were other groups invoved in killing our police."]

The solon has thus filed House Resolution No. 1871, which calls for the investigation of Maguindanao's local government officials over their private armed groups. Trisha Macas/DVM, GMA News

Possibly the objective was simply "capture and extract" as it was done in the dark.

Ampatuans , again ? You guys need to take care of these brigands.

Political patronage is the main issue why Ampatuans, or for that matter political clans across the country will never disappear.

In some ways, some provinces can resemble feudal system as the political clans act as the "kings and lords" of a province, like the Ampatuan.

At the same time, this family should be punished severely for their involvement.

Yup and in fact, it is four years overdue.

And seeing the incident, I really believe that we should consider this vehicle

The Stridsvagn 103

or at least similar vehicle to it.

It's low profile is very useful and it uses 105mm gun, I am pretty sure we could acquire HE shells for this gun which can be useful for fire support (I have little faith on the low-velocity 76mm gun that would be mounted on top of the M113)

Philippine Marines and the Philippine Scout Ranger Battalion should be unleashed on this MILF 'force'. Send them out silently.

Trillanes: Marwan death ‘absolves’ Aquino
11:13 AM | Thursday, February 5th, 2015

MANILA, Philippines — President Benigno Aquino III should be “absolved” from any liability now that Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias “Marwan” has been confirmed dead after a bloody encounter in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last January 25, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said on Thursday.

“Assuming the President gave the go signal, tama ‘yung ginawang go signal (it was the right go signal)…” Trillanes, a former Navy officer, said at a weekly forum in the Senate.

“In my opinion that absolves the President as far as this operation is concerned,” he added.

Trillanes said even suspended Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Alan Purisima had no liability over the death of 44 PNP-Special Action Force who went to the area to serve the warrants of arrest on Manwar and Filipino terrorist Abdul Basit Usman.

The sacked SAF head, Director Getulio Napeñas, admitted that he was reporting to the suspended PNP chief while planning the operation against the two terrorists.

Trillanes said the buck stops with Napeñas, who he said should have reported directly to PNP officer-in-charge Deputy Director Genera Leonardo Espina.

I don't see the logic of Sen. Trillanes. Pnoy is still accountable for the death of 44 PNP-SAF. Death of Marwan doesn't absolves Pnoy.

Battalion chief confirms SAF member in Mamasapano video
Published 3:46 PM, Feb 11, 2015

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Police Chief Inspector Reynaldo Ariño, commander of the 5th Special Action Battalion, confirmed Wednesday, February 11, that the armed officer shot twice in a purported video of the Mamasapano clash circulating online is a member of the Special Action Force.

"Yes, it's a SAF officer assigned in the 55th company," Ariño told the joint House public order and peace committee hearing on the deadly clash.

As agreed upon by congressmen, Ariño did not identify who the SAF trooper was.

The first few minutes of the video showed a SAF officer on the ground, still moving, when another armed individual shot him twice at close range.

During the hearing, lawmakers engaged in a heated argument on whether to show the video or not.

(Rappler is using select screenshots of the viral video confirmed by SAF officials as authentic. We are doing so out of respect for the dead men and their families. As a matter of editorial policy, we do not show video depicting moment of death. – Editors)

Zamboanga City Representative Celso Lobregat brought up the existence of the video after an emotional OIC Philippine National Police Director General Leonardo Espina revealed in the hearing that the medico-legal report of fallen SAF members showed they were shot in close range.

Cebu Representative Gwen Garcia issued a motion to show the video during the hearing, which is being aired live over several television states and news websites.

Maguindanao Representative Bai Sandra Sema blocked the motion as she shed tears.

"We are here in Manila. Most of the people here have not experienced war. It's easy to call for war," Sema said.

"May I ask for reconsideration that the video not be shown?" she added.

Davao City Representative Karlo Nograles argued the video should be shown so lawmakers can "ask the right questions."

Another Mindanao lawmaker issued a counter-argument. Deputy Speaker Pangalian Balindong said the focus of the discussions should be how to push the peace process forward, and showing the video would not help.

Sulu Representative Tupay Loong, a former Moro National Liberation Front combatant, said the committee should not highlight one side of the conflict alone.

"If you are crying for justice for the SAF, we are also crying for justice for the civilians killed," Loong said.

Caloocan City Representative Edgar Erice also argued against showing the video, saying that it has yet to be verified.

While the argument was ongoing, a female representative was heard shouting from the background.

In the end, the chairperson, Negros Occidental Representative Jeffrey Ferrer, ruled that the video would not be shown. Instead, the police was asked to confirm the authenticity of the video.

Police Director Benjamin Magalong, chair of the Board of Inquiry, begged off from answering the question due to the ongoing investigation.

"I would not deny that I was able to watch the video yesterday. But as head of the BOI, with all due respect, I would rather refrain from giving out any comment," Magalong said.

Sacked PNP-SAF chief Getulio Napeñas said the video was also sent to him, but he has yet to view it. Napeñas instead asked Ariño to confirm who the personnel shown in the first part of the video was.

Abu Misri Mama, spokesperson of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighter, said of the video: "No one can really prove what specific group did that if ever it is true. That will be very difficult. Who will prove if it is genuine or not? Who is the source?"

The Moro Islamic Liberation Front has yet to issue a comment.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima agreed it was an “overkill” after watching a 6-minute video clip purportedly showing the execution of the SAF commandos.

She immediately ordered the National Bureau of Investigation to validate the video. If proven authentic, it can used as evidence against those who were involved in the clash.

The NBI ’s cybercrime division has the capability to trace the source of the video, and, eventually, the gunman and the victim shown in it, she said.

“These are really barbaric acts. We shouldn’t let those responsible for this to get away…. Even if there is war, or even if there is armed conflict, there are rules of conduct, war conduct,” De Lima said in a mix of English and Filipino. – with a report from Karlos Manlupig/Rappler.com

PNP hurting as alleged video of SAF shooting spreads online
12:10 PM | Wednesday, February 11th, 2015

MANILA, Philippines–The Philippine National Police was “hurt” after an alleged video of the Mamasapano encounter where 44 Special Action Force troopers were brutally killed by rebels made the rounds on the internet.

“Masakit at malungkot ‘yung video kung confirmed na part ito ng Mamasapano incident at kung ang subject ng video ay miyembro ng SAF,” PNP spokesperson Chief Superintendent Generoso Cerbo Jr. said in an interview Wednesday.

(It’s painful and sad if the video is confirmed to be a part of the Mamasapano incident and if the subject of the video is indeed a member of the SAF.)

The six-minute video spreading on social media showed a man fighting for his life being finished off with two gun shots in the chest and head near a cornfield in broad daylight.

After the man shot the officer in uniform, he ran through the cornfield and took the battle gear of another slain officer. The man taking the video was speaking in the vernacular.

It is time to stop talking to the MILF and start shooting them along with the BIFF and ASG with everything and I don't give a crap if we have to go as far as break some rules just to exterminate them.

We should ask the United States gov't to include the MILF in the list of terror organization. Malaysia should stop funding and arming the MILF. Filipinos should unite. Yang mga peacenik ang magpapahamak sa atin. Ka-level nila si Pnoy. Ipapahamak ni Pnoy ang bansa natin dahil dyan sa BBL.
