What's new

12th Oct; Black day in Pakistan's political history !

Today on 12th october 1999, the military general pervaiz musharraf over threw the people's elected representative govt of Mian M. Nawaz Sharif and sat himself as the military dictator and ruled the country illegal and then rectified himself through the PCO order till was sent forcefully out by lawyer's movement.

his rule over the country, despite economic progress made under his dictatorship, is marked as dark period of the country, as dictators have always coup the elected governments in Pakistan by the force of military institution.

hoping for democracy to continue and the military to learn its lesson and donot repeat its mistakes and let the system run.[/QUOTE]

Probably that risk is less than ever before in Pakistan's history, and all thanks to Gen. Kiyani.
He has treated all the institutions in Pakistan with great respect, while working very hard to strengthen his own instititution; during a very difficult time. That will be his enduring legacy.

All news reports describe Gen.Kiyani to be a 'man of few words' to the point of being mono-syllabic. But undoubtedly he has been a man of some great thought.

Democracy doesnot harm, so yes death to dictators and their marshall laws.

The only traitors are Dictators who kept on destroying the STATE.

Death to dictators and their marshall laws.
Harm has mostly been caused by the politicians. Lets start with ZAB why he did not hand over power to Mujeeb? Had he agreed to the norms of democracy, may be BD would still have been part of Pakistan.

I've read the Pendulum thesis on Pakistani society. Great to know you've too.

There's one thing that is not registered and that's the mentality of the people. Our people are now much more aware of political environment and any breach on that would see street power. Secondly, the parties have also matured now, they do not want 100% power anymore as they did before. These two factors contribute to a more stabler political environment.

Why do you believe that ? it's just 5 year post mush ! Wait for 12-15 years then we can say that.

Agreed. Sadly our politicans think they're dictators by vote.

Agreed 100% Capt. Gen. Kiyani has been a great influence and he's handled the army in one of the toughest times on Pakistan.

As political activists, we from PTI, PMLN, PPP, ANP and MQM, all stand united against dictators from Pakistan military.

You are always united, bunch of uneducated, foreign agents, debt defaulter, tax evaders, extortionists, feudal, dual nationals......... thugs!

In a sense you agree to the fact that the weapon of these wadera come politicians to keep the masses uneducated was used against them.Had they did their homework.Or have they availed their chance to strengthen the democratic norms, develop the nation and educate them to strive for their right. It would've been another story for them.

i am talking about those who support military coup knowingly, without being able to contextualize their thought in a modern day world perspective, and without understanding what damage they do to the modern day State in the Int community, not talking about masses, but you are right in your point too, there is invasion only when there is space (power dynamics).

@jaibi; you know, I'd say that Gen.Kiyani has been one of Pakistan's greatest Democrats, and one that the Quaid-e-Azam would have been proud of. A leader who helped to bring Pakistan that much closer to the country that Jinnah dremed to create. The only pity is that it took so long to happen, but on the other hand is the beautiful irony that a 'man in uniform' worked towards making that happen.

I wonder what all our dear colleagues here who have shouted themselves hoarse to condemn Democracy will say about that, ehh?
:azn: ;)

Yahya.... the name is general yahya, dictator of the time, who backed Bhutto over Mujeeb and didnot call the session of assembly which led to confrontation between the mandate of the people of Pakistan with power hungry General !

had it not been stupid General Yahya and the criminal military operation, Bangladesh would have definitely been East Pakistan today !

They're a very real threat, Leader.

No they are not, not to the State. the only threat to the State of our size and power is external enemy likes of US designs, not their proxies or internal militant or rebellion challenges !

By treating the symptom disease cannot be cured. Similarly, one should not go by the face value of what happened; but look at the root cause. In this case instigators. History is witness that downfall of empires have taken place due to wrong suggestions by advisors and aides. More important is the role of opportunists who are always present with the ruler as their aides and advisors. Remember, countries are not run by single person. A whole hierarchy operates behind the scene. If one person could have been capable, there was no need to have structures in political, bureaucratic, judicial, administrative or military setups. Yahya could not have done anything alone, it was ZAB who enticed him into taking such decision.

What is democracy without democrats? There are no true democrats in Pakistan, why this hue and cry for a fake system which doesn't deliver.

dont forget ZAB, its bound to happen again?
dont tell me you are going to die for that?

Democracy was never given a proper chance.

You can't plant a trees and uproot them before they grow properly and then ask, why aren't they baring fruits yet?

Both have been given equal chance whether it is democracy or dictatorship during 66 years and unfortunately dictators have better served for people ................
