12 Megaprojects to Go Live in Three Months (Bengali Video)

Inauguration of country's first elevated expressway on Saturday | Dhaka Elevated Expressway to open tomorrow Experts believe that two to three thousand crore rupees will be saved in a year if the elevated expressway is partially opened. On the one hand, new roads are being built, on the other hand, working hours will be saved, fuel will be saved. All in all, they don't see the impact of this eleven kilometers at all. Apart from this, communication experts believe that if a section is elevated, the lower road will also be relieved.

I am happy that these projects are being implemented in Bangladesh. But I am worried about the project cost. It is prohibitively high.

They are prohibitively high because we use foreign contractors (some from Japan and Korea), who, while having very high construction standards (much higher than practiced in the subcontinent) are also magnitudes more expensive.

And of course there is corruption.

We have no alternative option about project costs being high or even about corruption (until Hasina is unseated and more discipline comes into govt.). All we hope is they pick high quality implementers and the projects are executed with high standards so bridges don't collapse and roads don't get washed away.

Corruption is going to be endemic to Bangladesh (even to the subcontinent in general) until people are prosecuted and the rate of corruption (harir loot) is lessened. What is important is that projects (while expensive) do not have compromises made in terms of design, build quality or sub-par materials used.

Examples are legion in the subcontinent (primary cause is corruption and shoddy substandard construction which follows),

Latest is this one just a week or so ago,

Let's not forget some of our own,

The thing is - when the pace of progress and development quickens, there will be scumbags who pounce on the opportunity and try to make money from it. It is incumbent on govts. to come up with mechanisms which halt shoddy construction, which is a lot easier than stopping corruption altogether.

Now that the first phase of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway (Skyway) has been inaugurated (which will bring down traffic jams by about 40%), there are other skyway projects in the cards. Apart from Dhaka Elevated Expressway, two more elevated expressways are being constructed in Chittagong and Ashulia. Several non-elevated expressways have also already been constructed. The government plans to build 8 more expressways by 2041. In that case, cities in the entire country will come to the expressway network in the future. Although sadly - a lot of these expressways will only be to help Indian transit, which will not benefit us at all.

Bangladesh PM inaugurates Dhaka Elevated Expressway (Skyway). While it extends from Hazrat Shahjalal Airport to Kutubkhali on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, the portion from Kawla Point (Airport area) to Farmgate Point was inaugurated on Saturday.

I liked the elevated expressway but did not like her speech against the opposition parties and development partners.:disagree:

Well she has to be good example to her party stalwarts and general field workers.

The hype has to be there - otherwise she loses credibility.

No opportunity lost without dragging the name of Zia and/or BNP through the mud.

Blaming them for everything under the sun including "dimer dorjon dersho taka".

Some reporter guy poked his head through the moonroof and rode the skyway. Fun times and excitement!

All we need is the van to brake hard and he will be ejected outside like a bullet...

BNP is continually scapegoated for the failures of Hasina/Awami League. Pathetic.
The reporter guy should get a bonus for risking his life:-)

Another discussion in Bengali on the positives and negatives of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway

I think more and more private cars will use the elevated expressway to escape from traffic jam. We need to give them some more time before they start using this huge structure.

Bangladeshis are a spendy bunch generally, there will be no shortage of takers - especially for Airport to Banani and then all the way to Farmgate.
