What's new

Bangladesh GDP per capita hasn't crossed Pakistani GDP per capita

You don't know anything about rebasing. If you have 100rs today, it would suddenly go up to 150rs just because the country's statisticians rebased the year for calculating GDP growth rates. The only thing that will change is the per capita income at constant prices. For eg. Your 100rs today was 50rs in 2004-05 prices (excluding inflation) it will become 75rs at 2014-15 prices, if new base year is 2014-15.
Re basing of year has minimal effect on GDP at current market prices.

Kiddos telling me about rebasing???

If rebasing of GDP has minimal change on GDP than why Nigeria GDP increased 89% after rebasing?

Not yet but soon. Bangladesh is growing fast. Note that they are smaller nation with few resources. Still they have achieved a lot. While Pakistan is in debt trap.

How will our increased population after the new survey affect our GDP per capita? Any updates?

That's what happens when wannabes try to talk economics. Have you gone through the real reasons why Nigerian GDP increased by 90%, it has nothing to do with re-basing. The fact is, along with re-basing they added a lot of sectors which were earlier not accounted for while calculating GDP, such as movies, retail etc. So basically, Nigeria was calculating its GDP in a wrong way and under reporting it. That might be or might not be the case with Pakistan.

Current per capita which is $1629 is based on 200m population estimate. Per capita in $ also depend on exchange rate.

The increase in population will lower the GDP Per Capita unless Pakistans economy growth is higher than the population growth..... It is very likely that BD will cross Pakistans GDP PC very soon...

Could you please explain what debt-trap we are in?

India has double per capita debt than Pakistan.
India is almost shoulder to shoulder with Pakistan in public debt %age.
India has a higher government debt to GDP %age.

We are a developing country, building massive infrastructural and economic super projects. Of-course we are going to accumulate debt, just as the US did during the 1950's-1970's following 'borrowed-spending' doctrine; which as you can see today - has payed off for them.

Our media requires "siasi drama" for revenue. They jumped on this opportunity to gain attention and surge in viewership by over-exaggerating the increasing debt. Indian media closely followed behind. Reality is much different.

And no, Bangladesh will most likely never cross Pakistan's GDP per capita. Bringing in resources, dependency, projects, strategic location and etc... it does not seem likely at all.

Pakistan is maintaining an impressive 5.7% growth rate despite facing political instability, internal conflict, war on terrorism, energy crisis, and so many other issues.
As these issues are being tackled and defeated, our prosperity will surge. Pakistan is unpredictable and economic miracles are quite common there, all I can say is wait and watch.

Pakistan has a 40% undocumented economy, it's tax collection is always less than single digits, our economy lacks proper structure and organization. Re-basing and economic reforms in Pakistan could have similar results to Nigeria.

Numbers simply don't add up, I just came back from Pakistan this summer and it sure hell did not look like a $1600 per capita economy. I saw massive improvements, astonishing growth, people prospering, construction everywhere, much more cars and etc...

PPP

Pakistan $ 5100
BD $ 3700

Not sure about that .

Agree our per capita is more around $ 2500-2700 mark . We need to do what Nigeria did with its economy .

I see the same when I go to Pakistan and that's what really matters. If the majority of people are living good lives then who cares what foreigners especially our enemies think? I think Pakistan needs to concentrate more on the vulnerable of our society and try to reach the living standards of Iran or Turkey.

IMF hasn't updated our figures for 2017 but last time they calculated for 2016 BD was $100-150 behind . We are also using 2005 as base year

Its all about base year.
Currently, Pakistan is using 2005-2006 as base year, while India is using 2011-2012 as base year and here comes a vast difference in GDP growth.

Dont know about Bangladesh.

So if the base year is changed will Pak economy automatically surpass Indian?

of course, if you change base year of Pak and change base year of India to 1900 Pak would have crossed india in all metrics.
