Indian fisherman shot dead by Sri Lankan navy

Indian Coast Guard has to give an befitting response to SL Navy. What gives it power to attack fishermen from their vessels? India has to give warnings and ensure those behind it are punished. This is peacetime for God's sake.

There have been several incidents of armed Indian fishermen attacking Sri Lankan fishermen and the navy has hardened their stance

The northern fishermen claimed that three fishermen were injured and fishing nets and a boat damaged when Indian fishermen threw petrol bombs, pelted stones and sharp objects. The incident took place off the Vadamarachchi coast. The Indian Consular General A. Nadaraja told the Sunday Times he was willing to meet the fishermen and had been informed about the incident by TNA Parliamentarian Suresh Premachandran.

The incident, the most serious during the past one year, came a day after Mr. Nadaraja hosted a dinner for nine leaders of fisheries federations in the north at a private hotel. A.J. Edward, the leader of St Mary’s fisheries federation of Kaddaikadu said they were still vulnerable to the ongoing poaching by Indian fishermen and the authorities had failed to protect them when they were attacked.

On Thursday around 10.00 a.m. the hour-long clash between the fishermen of the two countries erupted in the mid sea when the Indian fishermen were engaged in fishing off Kaddaikadu on Jaffna’s Vadamarachchi coastline. Kaddaikadu fishermen claimed that the Indian fishermen attacked them with firearms, sharp objects, stones and petrol bombs when they went to recover their fishing nets that had been taken by the Indians. The hour-long confrontation left three fishermen injured and their boats partly damaged.

Jamis Vengislaz, a father of three and one of the three fishermen who were injured in the attack said his fishing net worth about Rs. 500,000 was damaged by the Indian fishermen. ”When we went there to get our fishing nets they surrounded us in trawlers and started to throw petrol bombs. We brought stones with us too. It went on for about one hour and the boats were damaged. I was injured in the leg and we had to return,” he said.

How?
It is mostly Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan waters. SL fishermen rarely if ever come to Indian waters.

Now Indian are crying!!! Sri Lanka gave the response which Indian understand. We know very well how you do monkey dance for BSF when they kill any unarmed civilian in BD border. Now same hypocrite are crying for getting what they cheer for others. @Bilal9 bhai look at these looser crybaby.

In the fertile mind of Indians their country is the undisputed invincible entity in Asia. Even fishermen from India are 'invincible'.

In reality however the position of India on most societal, health and life aspects in (simply) South Asia is the most pitiful.

I am not going to go into a diatribe about how pathetic their poor (fishermen included) fare against poor in even other countries in South Asia, for which middle and upper-class Indians themselves bear most of the responsibility (unequal social development). The proof is legion from all UN based organizations, and not just in BIMARU states. Nowhere in South Asia do you see as many poverty-stricken farmers embracing suicide as in India. No one gives a rats a$$ about poor folks in India.

What non-indians in South Asia would like to see is less blathering and chest-beating about Indian 'supa-pawa' status, and more actual *work* toward uplifting their poor and their social condition, in place of the miserable mess it is currently. In other words - take some responsibility, a rarity in India.

Crying about taking 'badla' for deaths of fishermen is hypocritical - when the main reasons these poor slobs were stealing fish from Sri Lanka is the poverty in their own country, caused by selfish Indians themselves, somehow more fortunate than these fishermen.

Hey, these are Tamil Nadu fishermen from South. The Hindi politicians who rule India do not give a crap for Tami Nadu fishermen as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister pointed out. See my earlier post on this thread (#12).

People of Tamil Nadu has nothing against Pak or Bangla. If you have problem that is with the ruling Hindi politicians.

I hardly believe Indian media, especially news that come from TN. Has Indian government made any official statement regarding this?

SLN does not shoot Indian fishermen who cross the boundary, if it does we will have to kill at least 1000 per day.
Give a proper source and has even indian government made a statement?

Sri Lanka Navy denies shooting Indian fisherman
March 7, 2017 08:55 am

Sri Lanka Navy today rejected the Indian media reports alleging that a 22-year-old Indian fisherman was shot dead by its personnel on Monday while he was fishing in a mechanised boat at a short distance off Katchatheevu islet.
“The incident occurred in the evening when Bridgo, from Thangachimadam in central Rameswaram of Tamil Nadu, was fishing near the islet along with others and the Sri Lankan naval personnel arrived at the spot and opened fire,” Fisheries Department Assistant Director Kulanchinathan was quoted as saying by PTI.
Bridgo was shot in the neck and died on the spot, he said.
He added that another fisherman, Saravanan (22), suffered injuries in his leg in the firing while others who went along with them escaped unhurt and returned to the shore at 12:30 am.
Rameswaram Fishermen Association President P Sesuraja told PTI that more than 2,000 fishermen were fishing well within Indian waters when the Sri Lankan naval personnel came to the spot taking them by surprise.
The Lankan navy officials did not even fire a warning shot, he alleged.
Kulanchinathan said the body has been brought to the Rameswaram hospital and a case has been registered at the Jetty police station.
Meanwhile, tension prevailed in the area as fishermen from Thangachimadam coastal hamlet gathered in front of the hospital to protest the firing by the Sri Lankan navy.
However, the Navy spokesperson Lieutenant Commander Chaminda Walakuluge, speaking to Ada Derana, rejected the allegations and denied any such shooting had occurred in the area.

That CM Jayalalithaa you quoted was a hardcore Indian nationalist(and also had soft Hindutva tendencies). You would have known that if you weren't a Pakistani troll. Btw, Tamil Nadu was the state that gave the most war time donations during the Kargil War....Once again you would have known that if you weren't a Pakistani troll. Tamil pesuviyaada nee?

Also, for you: http://www.thehindu.com/thehindu/2003/07/30/stories/2003073004561100.htm

I agree that she was not a Tamil nationalist like Karunanidhi. When someone like her say say, “Even attacks on fishermen belonging to Tamil Nadu in the Palk Bay by Sri Lanka are not looked upon as acts of aggression against India. This issue is merely looked upon as a minor problem concerning Tamil Nadu alone. The Centre seems to think that the lives of fishermen belonging to Tamil Nadu are worthless and do not call for any potent action.” (The Hindu (online edition); October 22, 2011),

then you can be sure Inda does not give a dAMN about Tamil lives. That is the point. Understand?

Tamil Nadu was the state that gave the most war time donations during the Kargil War

Unfortunately Tamil people are severely brain washed. Sothey do stupid things like giving money to Indian military.

These guys have a habit of saying that fishermen died after SLN fired a few warning shots only to be proven false later

Some people here always talk about the rights of Sri lankan tamils but has no issue when Indians come with Mechanized trawlers and steal fish from the SL Tamils :P

Karunanidhi is a Tamil nationalist? It was during his time that the most number of fishermen were killed and he stayed silent. He is hated the most in TN. Your first mistake was calling him a Tamil nationalist.

then you can be sure Inda does not give a dAMN about Tamil lives. That is the point. Understand?

You as a Pakistani, can shut up. That is the point. Puriyudhaa?

Unfortunately Tamil people are severely brain washed. Sothey do stupid things like giving money to Indian military.

Or they are severely patriotic. So you end up with becoming a failed troll getting exposed by actual residents of Tamil nadu like me on this forum.

I like Tamil people and I am sorry for this loss of human life.My response was for those Indian mainly from Hindi-BJP belt who cheer for killing of civilian people in the border. No man,no matter how much crime they commit, they should not be just shot without any trial. We give the benefit of self defence even for the mass murderer in the court. Are these poor fisherman or cow smuggler or those who trespass border knowingly or unknowingly more evil than those mass murderer? But many bhakts/sanghis justify the indiscriminate killing in the border when it is the non-indian. Perhaps that's why Sri Lanka wanted to give the response in a language which they understand?

the same indians were happy with mistreatment of pakistani fishermen because they could be terrorists... well tamils were terrorists too.. and you never know what they are upto. Surely lankans have same right to be rough with them?

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday expressed its concern to the Sri Lankan government over the killing of an Indian fisherman, allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy on Monday.

"Government of India is deeply concerned at the killing of an Indian fisherman. Our High Commissioner to Sri Lanka has taken up the matter with the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka," highly placed sources in the government told TOI.

The source added that Sri Lankan Navy has promised a full and thorough investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, protests erupted in Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram after 22-year-old Britso, a fisherman from Thangachimadam, was shot dead on Monday, allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy personnel while he was fishing in a mechanised boat at a short distance off Katchatheevu islet. Two more fishermen reportedly suffered injuries in the firing.

Hundreds of fishermen staged a demonstration at Thangachimadam, demanding the arrest of the of the Lankan navy men involved in the incident.

The protesting fishermen also refused to accept Britso's body unless foreign minister Sushma Swaraj visits the island and gives them assurance that such incidents will not happen in the future.

Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced Rs 5 lakh ex gratia for the victim's family and Rs 1 lakh for the fishermen injured in the shooting.

In a statement, the chief minister said the fishermen set out for fishing on Monday morning in a mechanised boat from Rameswaram fishing base. The Lankan Navy opened fire on the innocent fishermen, without any warning or provocation, at 9.30 AM.

"I am deeply saddened by the death of Britso of Thangachimadam, who died on the spot. Saron is getting treatment at Ramanathapuram government hospital. I have ordered the district administration to offer high class treatment to him," Palaniswami said in a statement.

DMK president MK Stalin also condemned the killing of the fisherman and urged Centre to take strong action.

"It's high time the Central Government reacts strongly to this problem. The Central Government cannot be a mute spectator. It should take up this issue with Indian ambassador in Sri Lanka or the High Commission of Sri Lanka in India," Stalin said.

A group of Indian poachers have assaulted 6 Sri Lankan fishermen while they were engaged in deep sea fishing within Sri Lankan maritime waters off Kankasanturai.

Police stated that the Indian poachers approached in two fishing boats on Sunday with the intention of attacking and robbing the catch and the fishing gear.

Police said the value of the catch and the fishing gear amounts to approximately 1.7 million rupees.

The Sri Lankan fishermen who are from Hambantota have filed a complaint with Kankasanturai police.

In addition, the Fisheries Ministry reported another similar assault by a group of Indian poachers.

One fisherman has been reported missing in that incident.

Meanwhile fishermen in the North staged a protest against the Indian fishing encroachers and handed over a letter of protest yesterday to the Jaffna based Consular office of the Indian High Commission.

Responding to the protesters, India’s Assistant High Commissioner in Jaffna, A. Natarajan stated that his government has taken several steps to prevent Indian fishermen from encroaching into Sri Lankan waters.

consequent to such measures, poaching by Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan maritime waters has declined significantly.
