What's new

Pakistan will launch a two-seater version of JF-17 - Induction of JF-17B in 2017

Hi,

Why has Paf the dual seater F16?

And what is export market of JF-17 B? The 3rd world countries whose primary concern is cost effective solution and their immediate neighbors doesn't have Hi-Tech airforces like India

Hi,

Even those poor countries don't want to be left behind. They want a piece of the pie as well---and they will pay for it.

What are the target countries for the JF-17? What do the neighbours/potential adversaries operate?

Zimbabwe has South Africa (Gripens), Botswana (Gripens and/or KIA FA-50), Angola (Su-30), Namibia (negotiating for J-10s).

Tanzania has Kenya (test flown F-16 and maybe go for F-15s to counter Uganda (Su-30MKK).

Well why would customer buy a 25-30 million dual seater JF-17B and spend more on it to maintain it when he can buy a 10-15 million JL-10. Practice A-2-A, A-2-G combats. Will cost less to maintain JL-10 and then pilot can transition on to single seater JF-17 ?
Because It will be able to field it as a fully capable multirole fighter in a conflict. As a fighter, JF-17B is as capable as a single-seat JF-17 with the added bonus of another seat.

Fundamentals of selling any thing lies
1. Market research (3rd Word countries/Poor infrastructure/lack technical skills)
2. Understanding the needs/Wants for customer (Needs an aeroplane that is cost effective / Can fire BVR`s /drop precision bombs / No strings attached / Training requirements )
3. Positioning of product (JF17 position it self modern day fighter that can fire BVR/Carry precision bombs / Easy to fly / No political strings attached).
4. Product offering (low cost solutions /Trainer version (as multiple platforms they cant afford price sensitive issues .

This is a dilemma we faced all day as professional ,Its not I/we (Vendor) its Them/There (Customer) requirement ,JF17B is developed strictly on basis of customer needs .
A two-seat variant of the Chengdu/Pakistan Aeronautical Complex JF-17 Thunder fighter is under development, with a first flight planned for late 2016.An official with the programme confirms that the variant will be designated JF-17B. It is being developed in response to customer requirements for a combat-capable trainer variant of the aircraft.

As for capability it will be unfair to compare JL10 /KA-50 LIFT trainers with JF17B as later can go into this market but former can`t and inducting JL10 means new chain of suppliers (Engine) also damages JF17 product, its just like the message we send when we look for F16 against JF17

From a capability point of view

A defense official working on the JF-17B program emphasized that there will be “no loss in combat capability with the addition of the extra seat.”

I hope they also work on the design to make it look a bit prettier :) its one of ugliest planes!

I think You are not correct: the JL-10 is a trainer - in the current JL-10-form not even a supersonic one at least not comparable to the JF-17 - its weapons load is smaller, has less range and I'm sure since it is a dedicated trainer at first, flight performance is at least different - IMO surely not on par - with the performance a JF-17 has. Also the PESA has only a small diameter, so radar performance shouldn't be comparable.

It surely has its pros - esp. price - for many coulntries ... but it is surely not a dedicated multirole fighter like the JF-17.

Just my 2 cents,
Deino

Not to mention the fact that the primary reason behind the request for the dual seater is to be able train the pilots on that very aircraft. Otherwise, trainers are a plenty to chose from.

That is philosophy the PAF now believes in and so does the USAF. However, not all the air forces have come around yet.

Nice ... the modified the JF-17B's design a bit ...

The box on the horizontal tail is back. This was missing in earlier mockups which agreed with the lower height of the B model floating all over the Internet. Now I wonder if the actual aircraft will have it or not.

Also this one is certainly longer (and therefore less chubby and prettier).

Wisely i comment that pakistan will invset on 5 th generation jets.....as the top command knows that the era for un stealthy aircraft is gone.....and more preference will be the availability of a EW capable aircraft with strong endurance in form of JF 17 twin seater.

Pakistan and China should jointly develop an engine like the M88

Those poor countries mostly either don't need new fighters, and they will go for better options if the situation is so urgent. The JF-17 is a tricky plane to sell, but it's good for us and that's what matters most.

Hi,
