Lockheed Martin (LMT) lost the first round of India's fighter jet competition to France's Dassault, but its F-16 is likely in India's cross hairs as New Delhi starts another acquisition program.

India is looking to buy single-engine fighters to replace some of its roughly 900 fighters, mostly Russian-built aircraft nearing the end of their service lives. The single-engine jets will replace Russian MiG 21 and MiG 27 aircraft.

"Some overseas participants" were invited to participle in the program, according to a Ministry of Defense official cited by Defense News Wednesday.

Saab's Gripen E is also expected to be in the running too, along with a Russian offering.

Lockheed Martin shares fell fractionally in early trading on the stock market today. The stock has fallen sharply since peaking on Aug. 15, with Lockheed undercutting its 200-day line last week.

Last month, India signed a deal worth nearly $9 billion for 36 Rafale fighter jets, rather than picking Boeing's F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet, Lockheed's F-16 or BAE's Eurofighter.

Analysts predicted that India would launch another acquisition, likely with in the year, because the deal was too small to make a dent in India's replacement needs.

Lockheed has offered attractive incentives to New Delhi. In August, Lockheed offered to move its F-16 manufacturing to India. During U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter's visit to India in April, he reportedly pushed for a Boeing (BA) or Lockheed buy.

Boeing shares fell 0.9% in morning trade.

No prize for guessing. LM is going to be new Reliance for BJP.the way LM senior mgmt is coming to India as and when, looks like they definitely looking for home for themselves as well.

I wonder what is Russia offering in the single engine category.

Why not go for more Rafale ? i mean you already put a lot of honey in Rafale than i don't see a logical reason to buy a new Platform with Support and Assembly plant .. I Personally think go for more Rafale with a continuation Order for another 36 after this will be a better way to move forward, i mean IAF must have been wondering to look for a 5th Gen Air craft right ? so why not Look for it ? Tejas will be replacing a chunck of your Old and outdated Fleet , your already have Su-30Mki which will be Upgraded to MKK standards, with Rafale , Mirage 2k , Tejas and Su30mkk , next Aircraft must be a next Gen one ..

by the way its just my opinion , so i hope people will counter it with logic not with troll :)

India is looking for 11 squadrons of fighter planes to replace Migs. It is obvious India cannot afford that many Rafale.

F16 will get orders soon. There is no reason for Parrikar to reject f16s, unless he asks full TOT which is not going to happen.

I believe there are talks about Rafale MII in India, even given that condition, we can at most induct 6-7 squadrons of Rafales over a decade of time. And we have more than 360 jets to be retired by 2020-22, only Rafale will not be adequate. And by 2025, we will have to think about replacing Mirages/Mig-29s/Jaguars, add another 200 jets into the equation.

Given that India spent nearly 1.5 billion USD for India specific modifications in Rafale, I doubt the number will be capped at only 36 jets.

Oh bhai , Who is asking you to Replace old fleet with Rafale ? there is a Reason your Govt start-up and keep Tejas Alive for all these years ...

Tejas man , for replacing a significant Fleet of MiG-21's .. and Possibly Jaguar based on future Upgrade on Tejan Mk1 ... no one is asking you to limit yourself on just Rafale and it will be stupid anyway, what i am saying buying another same generation Aircraft that is F-16's will not be a sensible idea, unless Indian Govt just make this decision to honey Trap, American Companies ...

I wont say or worry for now IAF be acquiring 6-7 Sqs , but lets just stay with another 36 after the first batch hits India ..

It is clear that IAF is not ready to make Tejas its backbone. India will have not more than 2 squadrons of Tejas. Until Tejas Mk1, it is clear that Tejas will not be mass produced to replace its aging fleet,

Had Tejas been ready and operating at the desired specifications, this tender won't have happened :-(

why not ??? your country will be dried by French if you actually planning on to replace all those 250+ Mig's with Rafale , and F-16 (even if you go for blk 52/60 ) it will be a 60mil a pop man ... a small Air force with better Equipped Aircrafts and at least 3 level Air Defense layers will be more than enough ..

And which single engine fighter would Russia offer?
A Su-35 with guarantees that only one engine will be functional at any specific time?
The competence of the journalist is questionable.

I doubt that an RFI has been sent out.
Not a word from SAABs Press Dept.
