What's new

India left "disappointed" as US goes ahead with F-16 sale to Pakistan.

What else can India do except for crying & screaming.

I hope this is the last ever F16 purchase for us & we explore for good options without issues & restrictions. Of Course we will not get SU35 as Russia only uses such tactics to drag India in some deals, so Pakistan should try become part of Turkish 5th Generation fighter development & we should sign the recently offered deal by Ukraine as these moves will only enable our engg. to learn new techniques & methods.

I remember Pakistan trying Saab Griphen in Gen. Musharraf era but for some reason the deal didn't go through. So I hope Pakistan trues Saab griphen again & give it a thought as we should end this F16 fever once & for all.

gripen has many critical parts of US origin, I think thats why it was discarded.

The balance of power is already in India's favour why does the US still think that it can change the balance of power and why would US not want Pakistan to at least balance the conventional upper hand of India? Such an approach would at least put Pakistan off from the use of nuclear weapons because than we know we can deter India conventionally and dont need nukes for that specially tactical ones. Your take?
US shouldnt expect India to counter China and Pak to counter India at the same time

so usa offered f16 block60 with much advance avionics to india but even after 7 years, paf is still getting block52 :undecided:

Do you have any idea as why India didn't go for the F-16s.....and NO it wasn't that the F-16 didn't meet IAF specifications....had US agreed to the Indian demands, the Rafale would have been history....and look what psychological effect even the 8 aircraft can have on India......and not without reason. :fie:

India reacts strongly to US decision to sell 8 F-16 jets to Pakistan, summons envoy - Times of India

WASHINGTON: The Obama administration notified the Congress on Friday that it planned to sell eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan.

The proposed deal will now go through a 30-day notification period after which it will be finalised.

Earlier this week, the US State Department informed Congress that it was committed to improving Pakistan’s precision strike capability, which was seen as a veiled reference to F-16 fighter jets.

And on Thursday, a State Department spokesman, Mark Toner, said at a news briefing that US weapon sales to Pakistan contributed to the fight against terrorism and furthered America’s foreign policy interests.

The remarks followed a move by some US lawmakers and a campaign in the US media to stop the Obama administration from selling eight F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan.

Although Congress has delayed the proposed sale, the administration still seems interested in pushing it through, insisting that it’s in vital US interests to do so.

At the State Department news briefing, an Indian journalist asked spokesman Mark Toner if US Secretary of State John Kerry had received a letter Republican Senator Bob Corker sent to him on Tuesday, asking him to stop the proposed sale to Pakistan.

“As a matter of policy, we don’t comment on proposed arms sales or transfers or even our preliminary consultations with the Hill, with Capitol Hill, prior to any formal congressional notification,” Mr Toner replied.

But he offered to address the broader issue of US security assistance to Pakistan, saying: “We are committed to working with Congress to deliver security assistance to our partners and our allies that we believe furthers US foreign policy interests by building the capacity to meet shared security challenges.”

Responding to another question about terrorists using safe havens inside Pakistan to attack US troops in Afghanistan, Mr Toner said: “We believe US security assistance to Pakistan actually contributes to their counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations.”

Further explaining this point, he added that such operations “reduce the ability of militants to use Pakistani territory as a safe haven to carry out terrorist attacks and as a base of support for the insurgency in Afghanistan.”

That’s why, he said, the United States believes “these operations are in the interests of both Pakistan and the United States and in the interests of the region more broadly.”

Asked if he had any figures to back up the claim that US assistance to Pakistan had reduced terrorist activities, Mr Toner said he did not have such figures in front of him but noted that no country in the region had been more touched by terrorism than Pakistan.

“We believe it’s in our vital national security interests to support Pakistan in carrying out its efforts to destroy these terrorist networks, and we believe it’s an important partner in the region in achieving a stable and secure Afghanistan,” said the US official.

Mr Toner said the US also welcomed Pakistan’s efforts to support Afghan-led reconciliation talks. He noted that recently, Pakistan hosted the Heart of Asia ministerial and two of the first three meetings of the Quadrilateral Coordination Group.

“And they have carried out multiple operations against some of these terrorist networks that are operating on their soil,” he said.

“We believe that destroying, eliminating those networks is in our national security interests, as well as the security interests of the region,” he added.

As For US agreeing to Indian Demands Let see in Which Decade or century Pakistan can get deal like below

It should be a lesson to us we need to decrease our dependence on a million strings attached American arms for the future

@tarrar,

The testing of Gripen was to build the JF17.

As for the F16's price---as @Viper0011. has mentioned in one of has posts---it supposedly has 5 years maintenance equipment in the price as well.

This is not diplomacy, rather the reaction due to rattled nerves, .. do you ever hear Pakistan protesting in similar manner.....and talking about US offering to build Hornets in India, with the way the MMRCA deal blowing hot and cold....one shouldn't wash the soap before hands......there's an Indian national who actually sits in the Pentagon defence committee, he had virtually sworn to block this deal come what may.....i would really like to hear his side of story now.

I will bet that within or at the end of the two year period these F-16s are delivered, the PAF will order additional new-built F-16s. It'll either be through multiple incremental orders or through one final big batch.

How much of an improvement would the Gripen be over the JF-17?

In one of your article it was written that JF17 could get Italian avionics which would be great & an achievement for Pakistan. Lets see what happens.

As far as Griphens are concerned, I said it because I believe we will not get any more F16's in the future, but if that is not a concern then US restriction on usage of F16's & then spare parts are serious issues. So what I want to say is Pakistan should try to explore new options & Pakistan should end F16 fever once & for all.

Technically speaking IAF is way ahead of PAF in terms of quantity and quality of planes they have. I still don't understand why they are so worried about mere 8 planes...
