• China has realised universal power access by connecting the last remote group of 39,800 people in two villages to its national grid.
• At the end of 2012, China had 2.73 million people without electricity.
• Gomang and Changjiang villages were the last group nationwide without modern lighting.

BEIJING: In a significant achievement, China has realised universal power access by connecting the last remote group of 39,800 people in two villages to its national grid.

The lights came on Wednesday in Gomang and Changjiang villages in Qinghai province, the last group nationwide without modern lighting.

The 9,614 households are at an average altitude of more than 4,000 meters in the remote hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Shi Xueqian, Communist Party chief of Qinghai Power Company said.

The company spent 2.1 billion yuan ($324 million) and more than 5,000 workers were involved in the operation.

"This means Qinghai has provided power access to its whole population and China has fulfilled its goal of providing electricity to all people without power set out in the 12th five-year plan," Tan Rongchun, a senior official of the National Energy Administration (NEA) said.

At the end of 2012, China had 2.73 million people without electricity mainly in Xinjiang, Sichuan, Tibet, Qinghai, Gansu and Inner Mongolia.

Qinghai had about 470,000 people without power.

After a three-year action plan of the NEA, the 39,800 people in Qinghai became the last without power.

I am also surprised why it took so long... But, when I start to think historically, and look where China was in 1990 and 2000 vis-a-vis, say, Taiwan province, then I can comprehend the huge progress been made.

But this is still a strong reminder of the fact that China is still a developing nation.

Two rules of thumb:

1. It is not a big charity (or savior of the world)
2. It is not a push-over

God, can't imagine the life without electronic power in 21-century ... really cost 60-year to solve this problem in China.

Great achievement. It took a while...and I'm sure kids will be puzzled when their parents tell them they didn't have electricity growing up. Next up...hot/cold water you can drink straight out of any faucet without worry. You'll find it hard to imagine how people people could live without it.

China only provide cold water in the water pipe, hot water to buy a electric kettle from the shop.

Ofcourse, critics always like to bash China for being backward. No country and i literately mean no other other country has accomplished this feat other than China. China is a continent size country with unimaginable amount of mountains, very desolated areas and looking at the photos you can imagine the harsh conditions these workers had to face. That is why criticis from developed countries would not understand the greatness of China. The speed of Chinese workers are just mind boggling.

Well it is up to individual buildings to heat the water. They only have a cold water main leading into them. I was talking more about not needing to boil/treat water that comes out of that cold water main before being able to drink it.

You are lucky you have modern machinery to help. Other countries had to do it before even the car/truck was invented.:o:
