Turkey has cancelled a multi-billion-dollar deal with China to build its first anti- missile system that had alarmed Ankara's allies in NATO, a Turkish official said on Sunday.

"The deal was cancelled," the official from Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu's office told AFP.

"One of the main reasons is that we will launch our own national missile project," added the official.

The news came as Turkey hosted key Western allies including US President Barack Obama but also Chinese leader Xi Jinping for the summit of G20 top economies in the Mediterranean resort of Antalya. Turkey entered negotiations in 2013 with the China Precision Machinery Export-Import Corporation (CPMIEC) to finalise a contract worth $3.4 billion (3 billion euros).

French-Italian consortium Eurosam and US-listed Raytheon Co had also submitted offers but the government had prioritised talks with the Chinese company, which raised serious concerns over the compatibility of CPMIEC's systems with NATO missile defences.

NATO has said missile systems within the alliance must be compatible with each other while calling on Turkey to take this factor into account. Turkish government sources said an official announcement was expected next week.

A wise choice, in my personal humble opinion.
medium range missile =/= long-range national missile defense system ... shorter than HQ-9 200km effective range.

Anyways that's a good news for borth us, China really unnecessary to do such deal against our interest in Middle-East, especially no need support enemy's friend.

Turkey is no enemy, the Republic of Turkey is a partner for peace. There may be some cells in Turkey that contribute to radicalism, but that is given considering the border Turkey shares with Lebanon, Syria, and the rest of the Middle East. One should differentiate small cells from the entire Government of Turkey, my friend.

Turkey is not an 'enemy' of China. The bilateral trade between Turkey and China exceeds $25 Billion. Quite substantial, actually.

Let's remain practical and pragmatic, my friend.

Of course, Turkey is not Japan's enemy ... coz XinJiang is not in Japan. But China has different interest when deal with Turkey. I remember the HQ-9 deal with Turkey just price several billion USD, i don't think China really lack such money to sell our interest out. Now Turkey cancelled the deal indeed a good news for both us, no risk to each other.

Hmm, if Turkey was given technical details in this process, then they win. Since they had gained access to technical data on the HQ-9. Strategically speaking, a victory to the Turks. We cannot blame them, as you know and i know that both Chinese and Japanese do the same.

Aselsan and Roketsan will handle it perfectly, I believe.

No, they didn't get anything about HQ-9 from China ... coz this is not the medium-range missile in their hands.
