Arguments of choosing JF-17 Thunder over JAS-39 Gripen

should we opt for the Saab gripen to counter it?

Well Gripen is a very potent and cost effective product, unfortunately it is no more required in PAF now. PAF has started work on JF-17 Block 2 and a duel seat JF-17b..

PAF can buy more F-16 block 50/52's and get some old ones and MLU those to take on the Rafales.

There is also an other issue still India has not completely shelved the MMRCA or has completely ordered 126 aircraft, so Saab is still a contender. The only thing this deal of 36 Rafales ends the Euro Fighter Typhoon dream.

The Overall deal costed them 130 Million + Per Piece !
And Gripan NG is something Really Awesome !
Its a True 4.5 Gen Fighter Jet along with the Avionics and Datalink one of Best in the world !

Grippen is out of the picture now----. first of all---we need to focus on getting the aesa on our aircraft. Secondly---we need to conside an air superiority fighter aircraft---A J 10B----J 11D and as one of our colleagues suggested Eurofighter---F 16 blk 60----regarless of what---something needs to be done---.
 
6 Years old thread...this particular topic has been discussed to death. Pakistan wanted once this particular platform but when US signed a contract with Pakistan to sell it's Block 52 Vipers, Pakistan dropped that option. Other major factors were the fantastic evolution of our Thunders, which has been the best thing ever happened with PAF, and many other choices from the Chinese origin opened up for us.
 
I'm amazed to see that f16 blk52s have 10200kg payload. Also its far cheaper n I prefer that PAF should order another 32-52 of them.
 
The politics and Pakistan overall image has to improve in order to even think about this
 
i think the PAF is saving funds

for Jf-17
as we need 250 or more of them. That is a huge cost

also they are more interested in getting the J-31 or paf name Jf-31

both Jf-17 and J-31 use the same engines

also india in the future has

Su-30MKI, Rafales, Mig-29IN, PAK-FA along side mirrage 2000's, mig-21 bisons.

so PAF needs a 5th gen aircraft.

the best bet is investing in the J-31 and Jf-17
we need huge funds for that so we cant waste more on other platforms like F-16's

the F-16s have more than serves the Paf since the 80;s

also F-16 production line closes if it dosnt get new orders.

even at an avg cost of 30million a piece for JF-17 block-2 / 3

250 aircrafts cost a whopping 7.5 billion dollars plus 3-4 billion for spares, missiles, equipements etc

First of all MLUed F-16s cost not more than 25 Million USD !
Secondly F-16s Block 52+ which are little Expensive are way more ahead in terms of Performance and capability as compared to Thunder and are the Main Front liners for PAF !
Even MLUed F-16 have the level of F-16 Block 50 !
Which in terms of Performance are better than JF-17 Thunder !
PAF should only Stop Inducting F-16s when they are sure that JF-17 Thunder has Surpassed Performance of F-16 Block 50 / F-16 Block 52+ !
Which ain't going to happen until the arrival of Block 3 which is expected to have AESA / Extra Hardpoints / upgraded Avionics / Carbon Composites addition to the Titanium Aluminium Alloy Air-frame/ More Payload and Range. . . . Hence an MMRCA !
When PAF gets sure that they have surpassed F-16s in MMRCA level considering JF-17 Thunder !
Only Then They Should Stop Inducting F-16s !
Else keep on Inducting F-16s !
 
JF-17 Block-3 will probably come in 2018 but rafale delivery will probably complete at the end of 2016. So there seems a gap of numbers for a period of more than 1.5 years. So its better to induct more mlu F-16s within this period
 
Check the Brazil deal to get the total acquisition cost.
The Brazil deal is not a good measure for acquisition cost as the contract comes with many agreements like TOT, license production, and 100% offset among other deals.

And 15 AH-1Z Viper Attack Helicopters, 32 T-700 GE 401C Engines (30 installed and 2 spares), 1000 AGM-114 R Hellfire II Missiles in containers, 36 H-1 Technical Refresh Mission computers, 17 AN/AAQ-30 Target Sight Systems, 30 629F-23 Ultra High Frequency/Very High Frequency Communication Systems, 19 H-764 Embedded Global Positioning System/Inertial Navigation Systems are not sanction prone like F-16s.
