Pakistan Didn't Pay a Penny for South Asia University; India Stops Midway

Rubbish

India is our enemy, we should have no dealings with them whatsoever

SAARC is a useless organisation

Pakistan shouldn't pay a penny towards anything in india let alone a university

Horus, you are now digressing into the old ways of thinking, my friend. Start thinking about the new Pakistan you want to have, new ways of ensuring stability and a comeback of the progressive Pakistan we had chatted about.

The PM of India is not going to issue rape or kill orders on these students. India is very big into promoting soft power as you know. If anything, I will bet you that he will use this university as a model to show the world of India's largesse.

Try something different my friend, the status quo is not working for anyone.

Every decision comes from a historic context. No where did i say that Modi will 'order' the murder of Pakistani exchange students etc. The Indians expressed no outrage when a Pakistani exchange student was tortured in India last year.

Would Pakistan be even interested in such a project????
They have already shown their disinterest in connecting SAARC countries via road and rail (while interestingly agreeing to the pact about energy).
Had they been development minded then they would not have shown such brusque attitude during SAARC summit 2014.
The first line of the second paragraph got me ROFLing....and thats ostensibly true too.

But what surprises me is that AFGHANISTAN which is the poorest country among other SAARC nations has been regularly paying its share,a feat that even India could not achieve. It shows the changed attitude of Afghanistan, that country has ditched its vapid policies something which its neighboring countries should take a leaf from .,..or may be an entire page.

I hope the campus is completed by 2017 ...Inshaallah!!

To all Pakistanis - If you are so against the payment for a university in India why did your govt agree in the first place for that?

Pakistan should be booted out from this venture, lmao.Pakistan has already made some payments in previous years which will go down the drain(for them)after we boot them out.Typical Baniya move,:D

There was a lot of outrage. Some of the news channels carried the story for two days which, unfortunately, is a lot more than what they usually devote to students being bullied and tortured. There is no systematic hatred for Pakistanis here, and certainly none for Pakistani students. There will be problems, but then Indian students have a had a lot of problems in Australia.

The campus is being constructed right now in Delhi. They are functioning out of a temporary campus. The university isn't functioning well at all, partly because the Indian government has mismanaged it and partly because it's hard to run something when you require consensus form seven countries.

In my discipline, economics, they have very, very mediocre faculty. The faculty have also been fighting each other- the last Dean of economics had a public spat with the Vice Chancellor. He also accused one other faculty member of taking sexual favours from students. This is all quite sad because it pays better than other Indian universities and could attract good faculty from all over South Asia. They need to hire good faculty and give them autonomy to run the place. Unfortunately, like I said, the Indian government has done a bad job so far. Things are likely to change under this government though. They will probably see this as a 'prestige' project.
What are you studying in economics?

What are you studying in economics?

I finished studying a few years ago. I specialised in Macroeconomics in my PhD, but now I work for an international development finance organisation- so, basically, I'll never end up looking at Macro again!

Bed for the future of education between SAARC

South Asia University ! :o:

I haven't heard of this before; but sounds like a good initiative as long as its something concrete and not just for photo-op purposes.

NEW DELHI: The Parliamentary standing committee on external affairs has asked the ministry to “pursue” Pakistan’s failure to contribute a single penny towards the running of South Asian University since its inception. The agreed formula was that India would contribute 51.8 per cent towards the operational costs, with Pakistan having the next highest share at 11.83 per cent.

Pakistan has the unique distinction among all SAARC members of never paying its contribution ever for the University. Starting from 2010, Pakistan owes a grand total of $7.8 million (Rs 49.5 crore) towards the project.

The external affairs ministry standing committee, specifically asked the ministry to pursue the matter of Pakistan’s non-contribution “at the SAARC forum and emphasize the need for timely contribution by each of the member states”.

In the first two years of 2010 and 2011, India promptly paid up its dues which were $756,000 (`4.7 crore) and $3 million (`19 crore), respectively. The problem started from 2012, when India paid its dues but fell short of $193.566 (`1.2 crore). The figures furnished by the MEA to the committee show that in 2013, India failed to pay the entire amount of $10.19 million (`64.6 crore). The quantum for contributions received this year also remains zero for India, so far. It has to contribute an enhanced amount of $14.3 million (`90.7 crore) in 2014. India has been facing a deficit problem for the last 2-3 years which have seen cuts across ministries. The ministry told the panel that the enhanced allocation towards the university will be not just towards the commencement of the construction, but also towards its share of operational contribution.

Besides India and Pakistan, the only other country who has not paid their contribution for 2013 and 2014 is Maldives. Afghanistan, the poorest country in South Asia, has dutifully given its contribution for last four years – but has yet to send its allocation for 2014. All the other SAARC members, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Sri Lanka have made their payments.

The new timeline for setting up the campus is 2017. The cost of the construction has been revised to `334 crore from the initial `204.2 crore. MEA reiterated that “government is committed to bear 100 per cent capital costs towards the establishment of the university”.

Just throw them our of SAARC this will be better for future of SAARC.

A commitment is a commitment. If Pakistan agreed to pay 11.83 per cent of the operational costs, then it should be held to that commitment. A sovereign nation upholds it agreements, always.

This has got to be the first time I've agreed with you on something; maybe this a portent for the world's ending ! :(

If someone can convince me that the benefits of paying for a University in India outweigh the benefits of building a University in Pakistan with that money, i'm willing to say amen to this Uni.
I cannot believe I have to tell educated members how Governments and agreements work. This is not about you saying amen or not.

If Pakistani Govt deems that it is not benefited by this University, it should WALK OUT.

What Pakistan is doing now is signing to the agreement, agree'ing to pay and then DEFAULTING.

What part of this is hard to comprehend?

With a nation which just 'elected' a leader with thousands of dead Muslims under his belt? -Do give me an idea.
The neighbour of a nation founded by a leader with thousands of dead Hindus and Sikhs under his belt. Should be clear enough?
