What's new

Replacing Pakistan Navy's Westland Sea King helicopters.

The merlin was pitched to the PN back in the early 2000s... but it was declined as it was deemed too big to fit on any future PN surface combatant. The PN has selected the Z-9 for its shipbased AsHW asset so what is left is a shore based long ranged SAR/ASW helicopter. The S-70 may be an attractive option based on the T-70.. but the presence of US engines and associated headaches may push the PN towards an Italian or Chinese system. The newer Z-18 has been pitched but its too early to speculate on it. Budgets are thin and right now the PN would prefer the most effective force multiplier.

Well, first need to get ships to land those choppers on. Any news on new ships?

Not yet.... UUVs, Subs and Network centric development has priority for Naval projects.

UUVs...>?.... ignorance..

Pakistan Navy bought Westland Sea King helicopters in mid 70s for ASW and SAR roles. These helis are getting close to their retirement age. Discuss in this thread the potential candidates for replacing these old workhorses.

@Rashid Mahmood @Neptune @Penguin @SvenSvensonov and others.

If the Price is the main factor than, we should decide for the upgraded Mi-14.

What is the main role of this Sea-King Helicp in Pakistan Navy ? Pakistan should try to buy the Mi-14, we already have the experience and the structure for operating russian MIL-Helicopters.

depends on the tecnology on offer.....PN is usually biased towards french and UK war materials. off late the chinese have joined in. according to PN officers, they are reluctant to opt for US made systems.

PN has to learn from the past ^^ see what happen to the Sea-Lynx Helicopters, which were from UK ! Than even the Z-9 option is the best, price and the structure should be critical-points.

Can Russian Mi-38 fulfill that SAR/ASW role of PN? if yes it will be better as PA may also like to purchase some as Mi-17 is already operated by them.

I will ask again, from where this Sea-King Helicopters are operating from ship or Land, if from ship than the size of the Helicopter is important, here again the Z-9 would ideal.

Based in Karachi (PNS Mehran). These are the ones that have to operate from our old Tye 21 frigates when on active duty at sea but there home base is PNS Mehran and they operate from there. Earlier, the Type 21 were equipped with Lynx which are not active any more so that gap is filled by these Sea King helicopters.
The Sea King is mainly shore based but can operate from the Navy destroyers and larger frigates. Primarily deployed in anti submarine role with dipping sonar and ability to carry up to 4 Torpedo, these can also play an active role in anti ship warfare with 5 choppers reportedly modified to carry AM39 Exocet missiles as well.

I would prefer S 70 B. Longer endurance, better airframe, reliable ASW suites are some notable leading edges that this beautiful bird offers. I m unable to understand why deal could not materialize with OHPs. The aircraft has proved itself in multiple navies so is expected in PN
