High Speed Trains in Pakistan

excellent post Kiyani Sahib

what is your point here in this thread? why did you make that comment?

That means you want Pakistanis to change, and deserve better! There is a lot of positivity hidden in what you said, you know.

why are you posting here? what is the point of your cost analysis for Pakistan and Pakistanis?

look at these indians. They are burning in jealousy.

Well its same thing you do on India related threads . And my analysis is just to show the OP that with current economic situation it is not feasible to even dream about High speed rail.

You don't know about the current economic situation of Pakistan.

You came here to troll, not to encourage Pakistanis, or give them good advice.

I think the confusion is because you have been keep switching between miles per hour and km per hour. 125 MPH is about 200 km/hr and 150 MPH is equal to 320 km/hr. I think you meant 125 km/hr which is doable with high power diesel locos and track upgrades.

You are dead wrong about that and just to be sure I went back and double checked my posts and I have consistently talked about the lower spectrum of high speed train at 125 MPH. I never said anywhere Trains at 125 KMPH ( that is not considered High Speed Train at that speed). Heck 125 KMPH is78 MPH. You call that High Speed Train... and no ourtracks don't need to be upgraded for 78 MPH....

I think I finally figured out your Problem. You Indians think in kilometers by default. Everytime I mentioned 125 MPH your mind read it as 125 Kilometres Per Hour. If you go back an read my posts you will find that I consistently am talking 125 MPH and Indians are consistently interpreting it as KPMH. How Funny is that ....

My research shows that up to 125 MPH you can upgrade existing tracks so the cost is not as steep as laying new tracks. At 125 MPH the 236 Miles distance between Islamabad and Lahore can be traversed in less than 2 hours. That means that a Businessman can go from Islamabad to Lahore, spend a work day of 8 hours and be home by night ( a total of 12 hour day trip ).

The cost of upgrading the existing legacy tracks is not that high. The cost of funding the project is not that high ( China has offered soft loans with interest rates as low as 1% ).

As for availability of Electricity, there will be a Surplus Electricity by the time this project ever materializes in 10 to 12 years.

P.S. No I never said anything but 125 MPH train. Do your damn HW before you start refuting my statements. Go back an read my previous Posts and show me where I mention anything about trains in KM.

125 KMPH is not High Speed train , Genious.

My countrymen underestimate themselves so much.
There is pessimism everywhere. This is not helpful.

Wadere hatane hon ge. TTP bhi wadere hain

that's incremental innovation. Why not revolutionary innovation. Why not replace the whole railway system?

Well not replace this fake democracy with a real one first? The one run by the vested interests of two families.

Well you don;t need to be Economist to know about Economic situation of Pakistan.

Well the only advice i would give is that pakistan should focus on existing Rail network and start their own locomotive industry .

high speed rail is a expensive endeavour for a country like pakistan.

look at these indians. They are burning in jealousy.

Why would anyone be jealous? About what exactly? You are just discussing it on an online forum. Most of us just gave you our opinion. There are threads about HSR in India and many members are not very keen on it, some of us think that India is not ready for HSR yet and the priority should be on many other things. Personally I think Pakistan should look to improve the existing infra structure and run trains like these which we have in India now. They are not high speed but, they do reach close to 100 mph, which is good enough for now. Also the interiors of these trains have also improved over the years.

i think Pakistan ha to move to electric trains, as diesel trains require maintenance much more than electric trains and poor maintaince in public sector wouldnt allow it

nope first improve railway and motorway and focus on DAMS.
if you still have money( after spending over 50 billions dollars on above!)
then spend another 50 billion dollars on education and engnr universities and if you still have money then why not?:D

Baby steps.

I've seen this high speed rail stuff too much on this forum. People need to realise the reality, we can't afford it, we can't afford t maintain it either. Our railways are already struggling as it is. Fix that before you move on t bigger things.

The economy is not at the stage of development where it needs high speed rail or could make most use of it.

Take for example here in the UK, there's a project called HS2 that's meant to link London to the Midlands/Birmingham. The benefit is clear, the people who will use this to most effect are businessmen who need to be in these economic hubs, people moving about. People who's hours of work are worth a lot in money. Saving time and adding convenience in this case will (should at least) add to economic activity on aggregate.

Now, I ask, can the average Pakistani afford the cost of travel for high speed rail? Is there a need for it? Is there any economic benefit in the long term?

They may look pretty here in the West, but the real reason they exist is because there is a need and the need can be fulfilled.
