India's Bollywood stars are big in Pakistan - but some feel they show too much flesh

Why is Pakistan's Geo TV being accused of being a traitor?

Pakistan loves Geo TV. At least, that's what the ratings say. Together with parent company Jang, it's the country's biggest media group.

But on social media, things look different. Since Monday, tens of thousands of Pakistanis have lambasted the channel on Twitter for showing Indian content, using hashtags like #BanGeo, #TraitorGeo and even #GeoIndianDog. Some refer to Indian TV shown on Geo as "soft ****" and complain Geo's news is pro-Indian.

Pakistan has a history of ambivalence towards TV, films and songs made in sworn enemy India. Conservative Pakistani voices deride the sexy songs and risque themes of Bollywood films and dramas, but they remain hugely popular with Pakistan audiences.

Some Twitter accounts using these hashtags have tweeted hundreds of times in a short space of time, and mostly about this issue - suggesting there is organised campaigning against Geo TV, alongside the genuine tweets,

The #TraitorGeo hashtag seems to have first been used by a Twitter user named Madeeha, who says she is a 19-year-old living in Islamabad. She told the BBC that Geo shows too much "nudeness" and "promotes Indian culture". But her objection goes beyond risque movies - she, like many others, complains of Geo TV's formal connections with India. In 2010, Geo created a joint peace initiative with the Times of India, an Indian media giant. It's called Aman Ki Asha - Hope for Peace - and organises initiatives to bring Pakistanis and Indians together across the border.

This project has "hit a nerve in Pakistan of people who I would call the hyper-nationalists," Beena Sarwar, editor of Aman Ki Asha, told the BBC. They've had insults like this right from the start, she says.

In recent months there have been several unsubstantiated allegations that Geo is linked to the Indian government and media - claims which Sarwar says are "preposterous". Just before the flurry of anti-Geo tweets, these allegations were repeated on a television talk show on a rival network in Pakistan. Geo TV have so far declined to comment to the BBC.

To create a good movie or drama, story should be powerful. But in india, public rates a movie because of vulgarity in it. The more vulgarity in movie, the more rating.

ambivalence
Ban Bollywood in Pakistan and let them hire some burqa ladies for replacement

Sir I have already said that to create a good movie or drama, story should be powerful. They were good movies and I support it but most of them are BS..

Bollywood movies, these days, are not very good.

In my opinion Kaho Na Pyar hai was the last superhit (real) as not only its songs bcame super popular but it rocked theaters for 25 weeks.

Bollywood movies of today, generally last for 1-2 weeks only; even considering that they are released in hundreds of theaters across India, one will agree that most bolly movies today are not good.

They lack not only good story but good songs too.

and now they have created some 100 crore club, 200 crore club....i mean wtf

Out of 10 movies that bollywood produces only 2 to 3 are worth watching. I hate the south Indian cinema influence in bollywood brought about by Salman Khan

Offcourse people will find many Bollywood movies trashy and immoral. I do so as well and will not watch movies with certain actors or actresses since I believe that these people usually act in soft **** Bollywood movies. But to cry foul simply because Geo is screening Bollywood movies which display too much of Indian culture is baffling.

You are reffering to Dabang, right?

But, yes, the current bolly movies are influenced by south indian movies and I hate this.

They show gundagiri, half naked girls and cheap south indian type songs

For example, 1234..hit on dance floor

Wish bolly makes movies like SH:Games of Shadows too.

If you don't like it, don't watch it.
Some want to watch it for story.

Some want to watch it for women.

You know who you are.

You have a choice.

Bang on.

The net too is full of **** yet ppl like us prefer to be on interactive sites like PDF even though we have a choice of watching other stuff.

I find these double standards funny - Dekhna bhi hai aur crib bhi karna hai ? !

It takes very little effort to switch channels with a remote - do it.

Yeah bollywood was picking up in 2008,09 and 10 with movies like taare zameen par, wake up sid, 3 idiots, all comedies by Priyadarshan, dhoom 2 etc, and in those days Salman was failing miserably but unfortunately, he came with a bang with South Indian remake of Wanted which was good but this encouraged him enough to produce the trend changer, Dabangg, That, unfortunately, though increased the net earning, flushed the quality down the drain.
