atleast 18 confirmed deaths....Sad day for all Indians!!!! and i dont want to say..but this has been a bad month for Indian armed forces...

Sad incident.

The explosions were pretty huge so probably there were weapons' explosions involved.

So now what are India's options

1. Increase the order for Scorpene's?
2. Tender out P75I?
3. Get another two Kilo from Russia?
4. Place an order for two U 214s?

You will see two submarines are out of action otherwise both the Defense Minister and Navy Chief would not be in Bombay. If I was ACNS Operations of PN I would be really happy today not because of the deaths but that two headaches to cater for in the present battle plan are not there for the next 10 years.

Sad incident.

The last explosion was the significant one as it was white in color which is usually missile fuel.

The submarine has suffered from two fire incidents, one in 2010 and another in August 2013. A fire broke out aboard INS Sindhurakshak while she was in Visakhapatnam in February 2010. One sailor was killed and two others injured.Bad in that safety, maintenance procedures not followed

All Navies face such calamities. Heck USA, Russia and China have lost submarines at sea unlike India. Malaysia is no better.

The initial fire could be due to any number of reasons and have nothing to do with Maintenance. USA nearly lost an Ohio Class submarine due to a defective Vacuum cleaner.

Hopefully the loss of Sindhurakshak will increase pressure over MDL to accelerate scorpene delivery and CCS to clear P75I . But in any case Indian navy's preparedness has suffered beyond repair till near future. Given the sad state of economy, purchase of new subs right now seems out of question. Economy is in dire straits as growth continues to slip. This accident has come at the worst time . Need to see assessment of exact magnitude of damage to other Sub. Navy will try its best to shield same for security purpose.

RIP to the dead and i hope they will rescue the trapped personal. Hopefully no more lives will be lost.

I hope they rescue trapped sailors

You will not even find the bodies of these sailors / officers. They would be ashes after the last explosion, which would have traveled like a fire ball through the submarine. The submarine would not have completely sunk if the aft hatches were closed and hence you can forget about survivors.

Actually 10-15 years ago both Indian Navy and Iranian Navy had a secret pact for this class of submarines including training.

Better to have a party on a military topic then on why a mediocre Indian Tennis Star married an equally mediocre Pakistani Cricketer as the trend has been here off late.

plz elaborate the bold part

On 14 August 2013, INS Sindhurakshak sank after an explosion took place when the submarine was docked at Mumbai. The fire, followed by a blast, occurred shortly after midnight. The fire was put out within two hours. It is unclear exactly what caused the explosion. Due to damage from the explosion, the submarine sank at her berth with only a portion visible above the water surface.[11][7][12] Sailors on board reportedly jumped off to safety. Navy divers were also brought in as there was a possibility that 18 personnel were trapped inside. India's defence minister confirmed that there were fatalities.[13]
Due to the explosion, the front section of the submarine was twisted, bent and crumpled, and water had entered the forward compartment. Another submarine, INS Sindhuratna, also sustained minor damage when the fire on Sindhurakshak caused her torpedoes to explode.[11][14] Defence minister A. K. Antony briefed the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the submarine accident, and would leave for Mumbai to visit the accident site.

Mumbai: Although the Indian Navy is yet to come out with an official statement, the fate of INS Sindhurakshak, the Indian submarine that was damaged after fire broke out onboard early Wednesday, remains uncertain.

Navy Chief Admiral DK Joshi is in Mumbai to personally take stock of the situation even as specially trained naval divers are trying their level best to save 18 sailors, including three officers, trapped inside the submarine. Defence Minister AK Antony will also visit Mumbai later today.

Importantly, it is not for the first time that INS Sindhurakshak has suffered damage. The submarine, which was commissioned in 1997, got damaged in February 2010 as well when a fire caused by an explosion in a battery compartment led to the death of one sailor. INS Sindhurakshak was docked at Vishakhapatnam at the time of the incident.

However, details about the nature of today’s explosions have yet to be ascertained. Some media reports claimed that the possibility of weapons having been damaged cannot be ruled out.

As per reports, the submarine has sunk with only a tiny portion of it visible over the surface.

After the 2010 fire, Sindhurakshak was sent to Russia for a costly refit. The ill-fated boat had returned to India on April 29.

As submarines are designed keeping in mind eventualities like the one that occurred today, the focus is on saving the lives of the sailors.

The damage to frontline submarine INS Sindhurakshak is undoubtedly a setback to naval security given India’s push to play a dominant role in the Indian Ocean region.

Navy Chief Admiral DK Joshi; has to rethink about the 6 Scorpions being build in India as they might took it to France again due to quality issues.
