Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby has said the United States had a "healthy military-to-military relationship with Pakistani armed forces", adding that "we have every expectation that will be able to continue to be the case".

The comments from the senior Pentagon official come two days after Shehbaz Sharif was elected as the prime minister of Pakistan, replacing Imran Khan who was ousted last week through a parliament vote.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Kirby said the US had shared interests with Pakistan with respect to security and stability in "that part of the world".

"We recognise that Pakistan plays a key role in the region. We recognise that Pakistan and the Pakistani people are, themselves, victims of terrorist attacks inside their own country," he added.

In response to a question about election of Shehbaz Sharif as the prime minister and allegations of the ousted premier Imran Khan against the US for its role in regime change, Kirby declined to offer a comment.

"I think you can understand that we're not going to comment about domestic politics inside Pakistan," he responded.

When asked whether the US was prepared in case Pakistan's military intervenes amid street protests organised by former prime minister Imran Khan "with his very large crowd of supporters", Kirby said he did not foresee any US military role there.

"And I'm certainly not going to, again, wade into internal domestic politics in Pakistan," he said.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki had earlier said that a democratic Pakistan was critical to US interests.

Ties between Islamabad and Washington touched a new low after former prime minister Imran Khan accused the US of conspiring to dislodge his government. He based his allegation on a diplomatic cable in which it was reportedly said that a State Department official had warned of consequences for bilateral ties if the no-confidence motion failed.

Washington has denied the allegation.

Mending fences with the US would be one of the top foreign policy priorities for the new government.

It does suggest the need to bring an end to Pentagon - Pakistan Army training courses / exchange of officers / training of officers in the USA? They potentially are trained to become a 5th column against the people of Pakistan and the country ?!? The Bajwa incident shows why the pentagon wants Pakistani Officers to be trained in the USA in the past given the up/downs in the relationship from before. They clearly are designed to serve the USA !!!

Legislate to make it illegal for Pakistani officers to attend any training in the USA ?

What more proof do we need? This is the USA basically showing a middle finger to the people of Pakistan. It is sadistically laughable though. The USA giving its approval to the Pakistani army. Isn't this the same country that couldn't stop blaming and hating the Pakistani army for every ill on the planet? Obviously, Bajwa threw PTI under the bus and is complicit in regime change. Hence US approval for Bajwa.

I have been proposing this for years. In the past I used to get deafening silence on PDF. I am glad that finally, people have started realising what a bad influence the USA is on the Pakistani army.

They only need relationship with the army or a bit with political stooges but hell no if the come up against some like IK. Then we do regime change.

This is the same country whose officials on the record have always denied that the US government always deals with civilian rulers before approaching the Pakistani army. This is very twisted. As long as Bajwa is at the helm, expect the US to behave irrationally. It is vital to remove Bajwa ASAP.

The Americans have the Pakistani army in their pocket. They have figured out their weaknesses. There is a reason why the Americans are hooked to Pakistan. They know that there is always something to be gained. So many sellouts are ready to offer their services. Hence US willingness to return despite public condemnations and refusal.

Washington and the Pentagon have always had deep relations with the Pakistani armed forces. Nothing new here

Its mutual, the Pakistani military and Americans both gained a lot from the relationship at the expense of Pakistani citizens.
