WASHINGTON: Dow graduate Dr Mohammad Mohiuddin’s groundbreaking research led to the first pig-to-human heart transplant in history and the heart is now beating normally in the body of a 57-year-old recipient, David Bennet Sr.
Doctors at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSM) said Mr Bennet had a life-threatening heart disease but did not specify his illness.
“We are all very excited to see this pig heart beating in this human. This pig heart has performed very well so far. Even beyond our expectations, since we have not seen any signs of rejection,” said Dr Mohiuddin in an interview released by the UMSM.
Doctors and surgeons at the UMSM told The New York Times (NYT) that the eight-hour operation took place in Baltimore on Friday, and the patient, a Maryland resident, was doing well on Monday.
“It creates the pulse, it creates the pressure, it is his heart,” said Dr Bartley Griffith, the director of the cardiac transplant programme at the medical centre, who performed the operation.
“It’s working and it looks normal. We are thrilled, but we don’t know what tomorrow will bring us. This has never been done before,” he told the NYT.
“It is the first successful transplant of a pig’s heart into a human being,” the newspaper noted. “The breakthrough may one day lead to new supplies of animal organs for transplant into human patients.”
Dr Mohiuddin is the director of the university’s xenotransplant programme. Taking a tissue or organ from a donor of a species and planting it in the body of another species is called xenotransplant or xenografting.
“We have modified ten genes in this pig heart, knocking out four genes. Three of those responsible for producing antibodies that cause rejection,” he explained. “And one gene was knocked out to control the growth of pig and its organs.”
Dr Mohiuddin said that hundreds of thousands of people across the globe needed organs and “unfortunately, like this patient, may not qualify for a transplant”.
So, “if xenografts become readily available, and are allowed to be put-in in these patients, all of them could receive hearts or any other organs from these modified pigs. And we would be able to save their lives”.
Declaring the process “a game changer”, Dr Mohiuddin said that if this transplant worked, “we will now have all these organs readily available. And I hope it will work”.
Dr Mohiuddin did his MBBS from the Dow Medical College, Karachi in 1989 and did his residency at the Civil Hospital Karachi in 1990 and 1991. Between 1991 and 1993, he did his fellowship in transplantation biology and immunology at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Pennsylvania Medical Centre.

Understanding the Quran and it's message should be a priority over memorising. Memorising should be in addition to, not vice versa.
Absolutely correct. I have met so many Hafiz that have no clue about the meaning of what they have memorised. I am not a Hafiz but I have studied the Holy Quran with translation and read different interpretations of it. A Muslim's priority should be able to understand the Holy Quran before even thinking about memorising it. This is why we have scammer mullahs fooling the masses and they have turned Islam into a highly profitable business for themselves.

He demonstrated himself to be incapable of progressing forward the moment he couldn't achieve the minimum required pass mark, whereas others could.
No. 20 marks doesn't mean to let somone on minimum required passing marks. Its only for the merit list.

It hurts those who aren't Muslim or those who (for whatever reason) never finished Hifz-e-Quran.
What is your opinion on minority quota in education dear Mr. Adviser?
Dead Silence.

Doesn't minority quota hurt Muslims?

@krash Can you shed some enlightened moderation to this issue? since your friend has presumably lost his ability to type. (Let's pray Ya Science please help Mr Agnostic muslim)

The mindset is a gift that keep giving. Watch this video and weep.
When we make decisions like the above this is what happens.
Allah help us from this Jahalat.

All you need to know about what constitutes Islamic wisdom in the 21st century in one Facebook post.
The damage this is doing to generations of people that are born into Islam is incalculable.

What is your opinion on minority quota in education dear Mr. Adviser?
That depends on how the quota's are structured and whether the community in question has suffered historical discrimination and/or continues to suffer from direct and indirect discrimination and prejudice.

What is the requirement to get into med school in Pakistan? Is it just marks?

Why not turn it into a "holistic" & points based system? You get points based on both marks & extra curricular like volunteering, sports, work, etc. Although giving extra points for being a hafiz is essentially the same thing, it shouldn't be limited to it.

I can tell you as a med student that learning medicine is all about memorization. If someone can memorize the Quran they should have no problem memorizing medical knowledge. Of course being the difference b/w a good doctor & a great one requires more than just knowledge but that depends on your character. However, being a hafiz shows that you're able to put in the hard work & shows dedication, ability to focus & discipline, etc. So those who say what good is being a hafiz are just plain wrong. Buzzwords like these are what meds schools in the west look for. I'm guessing it's not the case in Pakistan

Additionally a person with Islamic education (most Huffaz have thorough Islamic education despite anyone saying otherwise) is more likely to see his patients like human beings rather than just a bag of money as most doctors in Pakistan are just robbers and murderers with license.

Hafiz shouldn't be memorising Quran to earn more marks but instead to please Allah.

No and No and day is of judgement is not far when Hafiz of Quran being disrespected

regardless of the intention no one can memorise Quran by heart unless he is blessed

By showing respect and giving Hafiz of Quran extra income is a reward for them which show our gratitude to them

The 2nd Rightly Guided Caliph and leader of the Believers Umar Bin Khattab RA gave all Hafiz of Quran a extra stipend to cover their expenses

and no one was more just than Umar Bin Khattab RA May Allah be pleased with him
