By Javed Akhtar
WASHINGTON, May 5 (APP): A whole gamut of Pakistan‑USA relationship will come under discussion when President Asif Ali Zardari will meet his American counterpart Barack Obama here on Wednesday. Policy‑makers in the USAs Capital attach great importance to one‑to‑one interaction between the two leaders, hoping that it will set a new direction for addressing their security concerns in the overall interest of the Pakistani nation that ensures peace and development in South Asia as whole.
While pleading Pakistans case on security issues, President Zardari will also assure the American leadership that they fully stand by international community on counter‑terrorism that also help to defeat anti‑USA sentiments in the region.
A senior Pakistani official told APP that President Zardari will avail the opportunity to brief President Obama on his countrys priorities and concerns towards security issues.
During the meeting, President Zardari wishes to represent the true sentiments of the nation, keeping in view the policy‑framework, evolved by the Special Parliamentary Committee on National Security, the sources said adding Pakistan is committed to follow the home‑ground strategy in dealing with militants.
When asked to comment on the significant of the Zardari‑Obama scheduled meeting, Information Minster Qamar Zaman Kaira said, Pakistan would seek a better appreciation of its position on various issues relating to the fight against militancy and security perceptions.
We will try to put across our point of view on various issues because it is very important that the United States understand the security situation from the Pakistani perspective and we hope to succeed in conveying our position on fight against extremism and internal security challenges.
The President talks, he said will focus on improving the overall bilateral relations between the two countries, aimed at pushing forward their cooperative partnership in all sectors of common interest.
Kaira welcomed the introduction of a Congressional legislation Monday to enhance US assistance for Pakistan hours before the arrival of President Zardari, but argued that more important than all thins is that our point of view is well taken. Zaman said there are certain misperceptions in the media and President Zardari and the Pakistani delegation would try to correct them during three‑day first official visit to USA.
According to the sources, the talks between the two leaders will also help to bridge the existing gap between the two countries perception as how to effectively counter terrorism and push forward their common agenda of promoting socio‑economic development in the region.
It will be preceded by a mini‑summit, being hosted by President Obama, bringing together President Zardari and the Afghan President Hamid Karazai to discuss a viable strategy to check militancy.
About Zardaris engagements in Washington, sources further said besides attending a trilateral summit with President Obama and his Afghan counterpart Hamid Karzai at the White House, the Pakistani leader is scheduled to have a series of meeting with American leaders including Vice President Joseph Biden, Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
Zardari will also be interacting with top congressional leaders on the Capitol Hill including members of the influential Senate and House Committees dealing with foreign affairs.
