LAHORE: Former President Pervez Musharraf has said the country is facing many challenges and conspiracies are being hatched against it. He said President Asif Ali Zardari appointed Salmaan Taseer as Governor Punjab in consultation with him.

Talking to journalists after condoling death of Pakistan Muslim League-Q Chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s mother here on Thursday, Musharraf said Pakistan is facing serious challenges, however, he hoped that these would be tackled.

As regards Lahore attack, former president strongly condemned Lahore attack and termed it a conspiracy to weaken the country.

“There should be no conjecture or statement without substantive evidence”, he added.

He said the government should improve training standard of law enforcing agencies so that they are prepared for any eventuality. Musharraf said he is in contact with Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani and lauded his services for the country.

In the meeting, former federal minister Javed Ashraf Qazi and others were also present.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information Sherry Rehman has confirmed that Salman Taseer was appointed Governor Punjab in consultation with former president Pervez Musharraf.

Talking to media here on Thursday, she said Pervez Musharraf was consulted in the matter because he was still president of the country at that time.

Sherry Rehman said nothing has been decided about the lawyers long march. However, she permission could be granted to the long march if it remains peaceful.

Efforts are being made for reconciliation between Pakistan Muslim League-N and Pakistan People’s Party, the Information Minister said.

See Musharraf was the President. The President appoints Governors, they are provincial equivalent of Presidents.

Musharraf is saying that even though it was HIS call to make Taseer President, the entire thing was discussed with Zardari and the appointment was with Zardari's consultation.

Musharraf says Zardari is in touch with him​

ISLAMABAD (March 06 2009): Former president General Pervez Musharraf (Retd) has said that President Asif Ali Zardari is in touch with him and is consulting him on different national and international issues. "Salmaan Taseer was appointed Governor of Punjab by President Zardari after consulting me and he gave the clean chit for Taseer as the Governor of Punjab," former military dictator said.

While talking to reporters at the residence of Pakistan Muslim League-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain here on Thursday. Musharraf visited Chaudhry Shujaat to condole with him on the demise of his mother.

Musharraf termed the Lahore terrorist attacks on Sri Lankan cricket team a conspiracy against Pakistan, saying that some hidden forces had became active to degrade Pakistan internationally. The terrorists had attempted to tarnish the image of Pakistan in international community, he said.

He was of the view that the country was facing many challenges and conspiracies, being hatched by some hidden forces against it. "We need commitment and determination to frustrate these conspiracies," he added.

"Cricket is dying in Pakistan, but we should be hopeful that Pakistan would soon recover from this situation and grounds will be opened for the game," said the former president, who was being blamed for aggravating not only the political and law and order situation of the country, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) as well.

When asked about the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), the former military dictator said that he would talk on NRO at an appropriate time. "The proper time for talking on this issue has not yet come," he added.

Musharraf stressed the need for improving the training standards of the law-enforcement agencies, saying that the government should take cognisance of the increasing incidents of terrorism and enhance the capabilities of police and other agencies. "The government must improve training standards of the law-enforcement agencies and provide them with modern equipment to quell the terrorists," he said.

To a question regarding his contacts with his successor, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, the former commando general said that he was in touch with General Kayani and was holding meetings with him.

Musharraf lauded the services of General kayani for the country and for Pakistan Army. He said that General Kayani was discharging his national as well as professional responsibilities and he had improved the image of Pakistan Army besides training standards.
