Zardari, Altaf join hands to deal with present situation
* Zardari invites political leaders to Iftar dinner * Kaira says Zardari said nothing against ‘establishment’ * PPP prepares ‘counter-strategy’ if governor’s rule imposed in Sindh
KARACHI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) founding leader Altaf Hussain and former president and PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday had a long conversation over the telephone during which the two leaders exchanged views on the current political situation of the country and other issues of mutual interest.
According to a statement issued by the MQM, they also talked about changes taking place at international level. Both the leaders agreed that the country needed unity in present circumstances. They particularly emphasised that the permanent residents of Sindh living in its urban and rural areas, whose interests were tied to peace and tranquillity of the province, should forget their differences.
They said that the people of urban and rural areas should promote peace and brotherhood and express mutual sentiments of offering sacrifices for each other.
Meanwhile, Asif Ali Zardari invited the leadership of all political parties for an Iftar dinner today (Friday).
Formal invitations to political parties were dispatched on Thursday, according to the local media, which added that Zardari plans to discuss the ongoing political situation of the country at the event.
The development comes just days after the controversial press conference of the former president. Most of the parties’ leadership criticised Zardari for the act and stressed harmony and better working equation between opposition and the government.
On the other hand, Pakistan People’s Party leader Qamar Zaman Kaira lashed out at political leaders for misconstruing Asif Ali Zardari’s statement, and clarified on Thursday that the party stands by national institution.
“The PPP has always stood by the army,” Kaira asserted while addressing the media.
Kaira said there was a “need to fully understand the context of the former president’s speech”.
He said the PPP has always strengthened the national institution. “Even when Bhutto was hanged, we blamed Ziaul Haq and his accomplices. We never blamed the institution.”
Claiming that the former president had always lauded the army’s role in eliminating terrorism Kaira said, “We have already said we don’t want any hurdles in the military operation. Why then would you think we would say something that is considered anti-establishment?”
Meanwhile, the PPP has reportedly devised its strategy against any possible attempt to impose governor’s rule in Sindh.
According to reports, the strategy has also been approved in the last meeting of the party’s Central Executive Committee.
The PPP senior leadership has also decided to tender resignations form Senate and National Assembly and would launch a massive protest movement across the country against the government.
Similarly, the party leadership would also challenge the imposition of the governor’s rule in the Supreme Court (SC). Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari is in Lahore to counter any emergency situation.
