Here's a thought, why don't Pakistani dramas give the same spice, dresses and all the mirch masala that people like to watch in the foreign shows?

I don't know the current situation, But Pakistani dramas used to be better than Indian

Pak TV was way ahead of India. This was in the late 70's, 80's & early 90's. Programmes like Neelam Ghar etc were very well made & presented. So were the plays . Not any more. Pak posters have to figure out why.

To an outsider it appears Pak TV is stuck somewhere between the old hardline fundamental Islamic approach and attempts by new channels to gain TRP which is being done through news alone. There appears to be a cultural paralysis and confusion on which decade / century the nation belongs to.

Here's a thought, why don't Pakistani dramas give the same spice, dresses and all the mirch masala that people like to watch in the foreign shows?

The people who watched those old shows have grown up. It's no longer funny to see Kabacha style commedy. Sitcoms in Pakistan are extemely cheesy funny, not ha ha funny. There are no sci fi shows.

Even if you have to make something drama based, how about raise the bar a little...

And no soaps. Whenever I hear the word "SOAP" it just translates into lack of talent. Even out of US soaps.

Why not? If that's what people like about Turkish dramas, then if you want to compete you have to give the people what they want. You can't dictate what the people SHOULD want.

Otherwise pack and leave.

Thats the question, how do we ascertain if obscenity is what people are looking for? How exactly did these private channels determined that Turkish shows are a hit in Pakistan, when we donot even speak Turkish?

They are dubbed in Urdu, obviously.

They will judge from the ratings and the fact that every advertiser wants a slot between those shows.

It's not obscene if its properly rated and parents do their job in not showing them to children.

They will judge.................. which means, decision to promote foreign culture in Pakistan was taken by private channels and not public/viewers. This also signals that interference from PEMRA on this matter has become mandatory.

Who is the judge - obviously the viewer, the "usual suspects" can claim that it's some conspiracy - but judge, the market, is the viewer, and the is happy not to be feed the boring radical religiosity over and over again.

But what does this say about the Pakistanis, why do they like these foreign shows? Why do they relate to them? Why do they think that their emotions can be invested in these shows?

Media channel is just a dukaan. If a Kasaii starts to sell local Pork in Pakistan and complains why everyone's buying foreign beef, then its he himself to blame. He will obviously either try to sell local beef, or go for foreign beef himself, if local is not available.

He is not deciding, the people are deciding, hes just making an informed business decision.

The people want their beef.

No channel is forcibly making anyone watch Turkish dramas. Teen din Turkish dramay na dekho, dekhna 4th day they would be off the air.

Lollywood woes: Man with censor’s scissors outlines new agenda

The heavily criticised and much-divided censor board of Pakistan is fast turning over a new leaf. The board recently laid off incompetent members and revised its censor policy, while trying to go the whole hog on much needed revamping.

Dr Raja Mustafa Hyder’s appointment to the board seems like a good idea. The man came off as deserving, competent and seasoned enough to introduce some important changes to the board.

“We are trying to bring a more modernised form of censorship and promote entertainment for entertainment’s sake,” says Hyder, based in Islamabad. “We have to make sure that the material does not incite riots or hurt our national honour.”

Welcome changes

The new censor board has “cut the excess fat”, which had been associated with the institution in the form of nepotism and cronyism, said the new chairman. The original 64 members on the board have been reduced to 21.

It now includes representation mainly from bureaucrats, lawyers, and anchors. When asked why people from the industry were not present on the board, Hyder said, “It will fuel a conflict of interest.”

During a full-board meeting, Hyder explained that a new rating system would be implemented, and licences and the rating should me made part of a film’s trailer. He also said that the censor board would soon be updating its outdated screening hall and moving away from 35mm films.

The rating system will be brought to more normative standards so that viewers can also pre-censor the film before deciding to watch it. Hyder said that the rating system would be broken down into three categories: ‘C’ for cleared, ‘B’ for banned, and ‘R’ for restricted films. However, it wasn’t clear how a film marked as ‘B’ would reach the viewer in the first place.

Hyder explains that the ratings will be based on variables of national security, obscenity, nudity, dances, gory images, hurting national/religious sentiments, bestiality and lastly plagiarism.

“What is good for India may not be good for us,” says Hyder. “We must pay heed to our national identity and culture while censoring

However, Nadeem Mandvi*walla, the managing director of Mandivalla Entertainment, thought that the rating system was futile as films were being cut in spite of it.

“It makes no sense to have a rating system and then cut films. Furthermore, no matter how much you improve the rules and regulations, the films are available through the internet and DVDs,” said Mandviwalla.

Qualified optimism

The appointment of a new censor board chairman seems to have provided little encouragement to people from the film industry.

Chaudary Kamran, a producer and a vocal critic of the government’s censor policy, said that federal government’s role in censoring should be limited to foreign films.

“The issue is that the Punjab government is not doing anything for films,” says Kamran. “The other issue is that not many Pakistani films are being made to begin with.”

There is similar complain within India too, bollywood has been accused of destroying Indian culture, encouraging rape, and destroying local movie Industry in some states.
Specifically about promoting local movie Industry, govt can certainly help funding or giving tax break to local movie Industry. Also local movies can fight back by making more experimental movie, or movies with human interest story... which many not need high budget.

In India, multiplexes in malls have suddenly opened possibility of making small movies for 'class' audiance, who care less about star cast and more about the movie. Local industry like marathi and kannada which was in decline before, are seeing some gains now due to the multiplexes.

Friends, this not about film makers or censors, it's about an ideology that one will find in all corridors of power in Pakistan - note, national security, national identity and what these crazies call culture, form the basis, or arcs or platforms, from which these crazies continue to launch their wars against Pakistan - Note Heavily made up Indian women, foreign shows, vulgarity, Dancing and national HONOR are all intertwined in their ideology.
