Op-Ed: Yep, the world has a new role model for political and economic development

Is America still the world’s role model? More people are making the argument that America is no longer the world’s role model. But others such as Martin Dempsey, a retired US general who served as the 18th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, still hold onto the belief that the US, and only the US, can light the world: “Heard China claims to be ‘role model’ for the world. Nope. The world has a role model. Unless we talk ourselves out of it,” he recently wrote on Twitter.

Judging by the responses, many are skeptical about this claim. “Psst: We’re not currently the world role-model,” one user commented. “We are a laughing stock,” a different user wrote. “To this observer America looks like a role model for a deeply corrupt democracy descending into civil war,” Margo Kingston, a retired political journalist, commented. “Pretty sure the rest of the world is striving NOT to be anything like US,” another user wrote.

The largely negative responses are not necessarily an accurate reflection of overall public opinion, but they do point to a larger truth, one that is becoming increasingly clear in this new era of world politics. That is, whether or not the US actually remains a good role model for the world, people increasingly believe that the US is, at the very least, no longer the world’s only role model. This is in part because of the decline of the US and, in part, because of the rise of China.

While the US still has an important role to play in this new era, some people are not exactly echoing Dempsey’s position. Fareed Zakaria, who writes a foreign affairs column for The Washington Post, said that the Chinese model has become an “alternative” model. And John Kelly, the current White House Chief of Staff for US President Donald Trump, recently acknowledged in an interview that China is “another world power.” From online comments to the highest levels of the US government, a coherent message is forming: the world does not just revolve around the West anymore.

And it is not hard to see why. China’s ruling party has lifted hundreds of millions of people out of poverty and created a thriving middle class, transforming the world’s most populous country into one of the world’s most powerful in record time. At the same time, China is helping other countries rise with game-changing initiatives such as the Belt and Road. The reality is that China is moving forward and closer to center stage. Meanwhile, the US appears to be turning toward isolationism and protectionism.

All of which, of course, means that China can light the world too. At the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, President Xi Jinping said that the path, the theory, the system, and the culture of socialism with Chinese characteristics have kept developing, blazing a new trail for other developing countries to achieve modernization. It offers a new option for other countries and nations who want to speed up their development while preserving their independence; and it offers Chinese wisdom and a Chinese approach to solving the problems facing mankind.

Also as stated in the 19th CPC National Congress report, China remains firmly committed to building a new type of international relations featuring mutual respect, fairness, justice, and win-win cooperation.

China does not need to claim to be a role model for the world, because the advantages of the Chinese model are being increasingly recognized around the world – and at a time when the disadvantages of the American model are being highlighted. So whether one wants to admit it or not, a new role model is in town.

You are wrong. Surely soon enough China will lead the world in a new revolution where peoples everywhere will overthrow the existing order and install the Chinese model of governance. China will be swarmed with young foreigners hungry for Chinese wisdom of leadership. They will learn with bated breath and they will return to their home countries with new and better ideas on how to lead the masses.

Nope..try again... I'll take any scandinavian or West EU country as a model... in every sphere of the society... thousands of years before any Chinese model...

And for those jumping on your horses... the model we speak is the POLITICAL é ECONOMICAL one... don't try to jump on other subjects...

I do not think China model is exportable. The point is not to offer an alternative.

It is to let others know that alternatives are possible.

Every nation can be an alternative in their running of national affairs.

The China Model is not valuable as something to copy. It is valuable as it has destroyed the myth of US exceptionalism. Countries do not want to copy like blind. They do not like to be imposed.

This is the greatest threat to US dominance on global political discourse. Of course, series of policy failures by the US also contributed to this trend.

China has a well-articulated plan to entirely destroy US political hubris.

These alternatives always existed and will continue to exist. What you are saying is neither new nor exceptional.

The irony is your "idea" is that US model/exceptionalism is... what give and made China what she is today...
China model is not new neither created by China... it's an hybrid btw Communist ideology and Free MArket.. A model who made concessions in her ideology to be able to survive and expend in the world...

And for those seeing China with her expension inland and out has being something "made by great minds" it's just a BIg economical country... catching the train... so it's logical that the advance that we see is fast and strong...

But the Q, the most important one is..; What will China became/do when she catch up? Will she be able to innovate beyond every human knowledge or will follow... or fall.

The Chinese model is like a boat made from Swiss cheese. Sure it's floating now but it has so many holes.
They will also already having problems with trying to control people's thoughts.
Long term, the Chinese model will collapse and either take the communist party down, or the country down.

Democracy and freedom are the only way to go.

How realistic is it for a developing nation in Africa and elsewhere to follow the Scandinavian or EU model?

As to what made China model different, maybe this will help.

Americans used to criticize Singapore for being a 'nanny state' but now they are studying our healthcare and education system, some of the most pressing issues they face now. After studying our system, they came to the same conclusion; it only works because we are able to combine elements from both conservative and liberal by being a nanny state. And therefore our model is not applicable for them.

https://www.vox.com/platform/amp/po...356118/singapore-health-care-system-explained

I'm saying this not because I think our model is inherently superior. Different countries have to look for different models because of differences in culture and history. It wouldn't get through the Congress if the US tries and follow our model on healthcare. Singapore is much smaller than the US and our Confucian culture views the government as a role a father would play in his family while Americans believe in individualism.

So every country has to look for its way to suit itself. There's no 'one size fits all'.
Like what our PM replied to a British interviewer when asked about greater freedom in Singapore: "The world is a diverse place. Nobody has a monopoly on virtue or wisdom. And unless we can accept that, and we prosper together and co-operate together, accepting our differences...I think it becomes difficult."

Origins of Meritocracy in China

An exemple is Norway... It was the poorest in the EU Decades ago... it's one of the richest in the WOLRD now...
Some may say it's because of the black gold.. yes it helped... but it wasn't the main condition...

So yes it' spossible to do so in every country around the world and even inAFrica... the only condition is someone with enough goodwill power to impose it... and yes... they will be a long road... but Impossible should never be a word used for us Humans... and China is the definition of it.

If you spoke about China dev and avance of today 50 years ago... you will seen as the most stupid man on earth...

As for meritocracy... We know both of us..; that China Meritocracy is limited to a part of the population... turning a blind eye on it...just show the general hypocrisy... I have Chinese friends who are Doctors/ENgineers etc... and yet their last name and place of orign (south china and west) can't give them the same respect / place and value as others... So NO China is not a Meritocracy as some want to portray it, but sure there is for a " specific" part of them with all the good conditions...

The West are those who are nearer to perfect/Full Meritocracy. Where it's easier for a noname guy to be president... while in China... the sphere of power/influence is made of past important families per exemple... same for biz. And don't mistake the new rich in China as a success of meritocracy...

Western electoral democracy has reached it's level of incompetence.
