Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chief Yasin Malik detained and moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq placed under house arrest on Thursday after sepratists called for a shutdown to protest the killing of cilvilians and the assassination of senior journalist Shujaat Bukhari.

Malik was taken into custody from his Maisuma residence this morning, a police official said. He said Malik has been lodged in police station Kothibagh. The official said Mirwaiz was placed under house arrest at his Nigeen residence. Hardline Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani continued to remain under house detention.

Markets, businesses and educational institutes were closed in the capital Srinagar and other districts while vehicles staye doff the roads. There was a heavy deployment of police and CRPF in sensitive parts of Srinagar’s old city to prevent any protests.

Jammu and Kashmir is under governor’s rule after the Mehbooba Mufti government collapsed after all its alliance partner BJP withdrew support earlier this week.

Geelani, Mirwaiz and Yasin Malik had called the strike after three civilians were died in protests before and on the eve of Eid. They also demanded an international probe into the murder of Bukhari.

“The journalistic fraternity has faced tremendous hardships during the past many decades while carrying out its professional duties. It is because of the contribution of the vibrant Kashmiri media that reports with sincerity and against all odds that the world community that the ground situation in Kashmir gets highlighted and their contribution can never be ignored,” they said in a joint statement.

Rising Kashmir editor-in-chief Shujaat Bukhari, 50, was assassinated just outside his office in Srinagar on June 14. His two personal security officers were also killed in the attack. A man caught on camera stealing the pistol of one of the security guards was arrested .

Police on Wednesday detained another person for questioning from north Kashmir’s Bandipora district

Reports from other cities and towns in the Valley also indicate that the shutdown derailed normal life there too. Rail services were also suspended as a precaution.

India making things harder for themselves again.

Encounter in JnK... 4 terrorists trapped... no stone pelting or demonstration on encounter site...

Mehboba Mufti was holding an intelligence report of JnK police and was not sharing it with other defence forces... rightly kicked out...

Baki separatists are running and hiding for their life...

Explain how?

This matter can be easily resolved by talking with Hurriyet, withdrawing troops, re-instating autonomous status of Kashmir under Hurriyet, talking with Pakistan to downscale militarization of LoC, stopping hateful rhetoric against Pakistan, withdrawing Gujurati Hindu settlers from Kashmir, prosecuting and giving tough punishments to military/police/border forces who have raped/tortured/murdered innocent civilians.

This is the only way India will get Kashmir back. Otherwise doubling down on failed policies will inevitably result in loss of Kashmir by India. How long can you hold a population hostage? History shows that it’s not very long.

Let me share some facts from ground situation of Kashmir:
  1. Hurriyet is front end of terrorists and ISI chimps
  2. Everybody in kashmir knows this fact, gun wielding 'freedom fighter' are power of this religious group
  3. If Hurriyet says we will not kill anyone, trust me NO ONE will participate in band or shutdowns
  4. Except for particular area of South Kashmir, rest is solidly with India.
  5. That south kashmir needs same methods that was deployed by pakistan in Baluchistan, FATA. Using air power to kill people. Done and dusted.
  6. Rest, with no money. no one will come to stone pelting and come to call from masjid. It is unemployment driven by political power who collects all central money and make properties in Delhi/ Gurgaon/ Mumbai and send their kids to foreign universities.
  7. This Andrabi is biggest bigot, her kid is enjoying 'western' life in Newzeland while she is forcing poor kids to take arms.
  8. All people can see this in Kashmir

All propaganda. No facts, and definitely not from the ground.

... Or abrogate article 370

Changes can happen in other ways too as suggested by you, they will happen only through the ballot. Those who claim leadership in J&K need to contest elections to show ( & see for themselves) the percentage of representation they have in the state.

Till then they remain rabble rousers & shall be treated accordingly.

Hurriyet are the voice of Kashmiris. No matter what you say, you can never dispute this.

Why make them change? Why doesn’t India change its stance and start respecting Kashmiris for a change?

However, you do understand the current situation and Modi’s policies are pushing Kashmiris and Pakistan together.

Check my posts from last month, I clearly mentioned that I will traveling to Kashmir with my family for 10 days. yes, It was lovely where people respect tourists and hate local political including Hurryiet guys for corruption. You are just a keyboard warrior who knows nothing.

Sir, I respect your views , however will disagree with most of them.

PDP and BJP tried the peaceful approach as suggested by you, however during Ramzaan ceasefire the same huriyat regrouped and upped the ante. With LeT they even killed an unarmed Kashmiri soldier during eid. All huriyat leaders are filthy rich and most of their children are studying /settled in Europe or USA.

I will reiterate that your post is in good intention, however execution sometimes need to be different due to several factors.

Now, the neutralization is inevitable but let's see the after effects.

Yes this is the Indian view, however I am more interested to see the actions of my Kashmiri brothers and sisters under occupation. Hurriyet has been resisting like true leaders and We are proud of them. The whole world is watching the Kashmiris out in the streets.

Possibly, let them stand for elections and show whom they represent. Kashmir is not an entity by itself nor was it ever one. It is one of the regions of the erstwhile state of Kashmir ruled by Hari Singh.

Why make them change? Why doesn’t India change its stance and start respecting Kashmiris for a change?

What changes are you talking of ? Respect is mutual, those who do not respect or abide by the constitution of the nation ought not to expect any.

However, you do understand the current situation and Modi’s policies are pushing Kashmiris and Pakistan together.

No I do not understand nor do I accept your remark as true.

Until you see the reality of the situation, you will be trying to force a square block into a circular hole. Kashmir issue cannot be resolved through force, but it will always ignite the Kashmiris against you. Learn from Pakistan’s support of Kashmir and it’s gaining the love of everyday Kashmiris by only vocal support.

Sir, do you think the same if Pakistani govt has issued article 370 or similar for Azad Kashmir? Sometimes you have to pay to be tolerant and India under Congress rule never learned it.
