Varoufakis is the kind of rich guy who likes to think of himself as a communist.
Back when SYRIZA won the elections in 2014,they had been shouting big statements like "We'll tear all the memorandums" or "We'll be playing the music and they (the EU) will be dancing" or "Go back madame Merkel!". All these were quotes by Tsipras.
However,when they became government,they were faced with the tough Europeans and quickly chewed all their words.
The implementation of capital controls frustrated and angered Greeks. I remember this scene. Waiting in line to withdraw 60 Euros per day from the ATM.
Most politicians of course didn't have a problem. They were loaded with cash and deposits in foreign banks.
The SYRIZA government soon declared a referendum concerning the austerity measures and the bailout in Greece.
The people overwhelmingly voted for "NO".

Eventually,Varoufakis left SYRIZA and founded his own party "Mera25".
In the "debate" of the political leaders (which is actually a series of questions by reporters live on TV) 3 weeks ago, Varoufakis' replies ranged from vague to Utopian to idiotic.
Varoufakis wanted to create a digital currency parallel to the Euro,if he got to power,with each the government would be paying people online and they would be paying for public services etc.
He said that drilling for oil and gas would not be the best solution. He argued that oil and gas drilling would only bring profit in 15 years and it might not even bring profit,depending on the prices at that time period and that drilling for oil and gas only brings tensions in the region and is an ecologic disaster for the environment. He said "floating wind turbines" are the future and we should invest in that.
He was then reminded that for an ecologist,he is the politician in Greece with the highest energy footprint.
He and his wife own 2 cars (apart from the MP one),5 motorcycles and 1 small boat.
A few months ago,he went to a neighborhood of Athens which is the "stronghold" of anarchists and all kinds of radical leftists. He went at a bar or restaurant with his wife and without his police escort. Probably considering himself a leftist revolutionary or something. Well,a large group of anarchists appeared,took him out and beat him up.
He denied that they were "leftists" and kept saying they were "bouncers" and "people of the night". However,the anarchists were arrested and videos of him getting beaten up by them were found on their cell-phones. They didn't deny it.
His plan for the Army was to abolish conscription,saying "only in this way we can increase the readiness of the Armed Forces".
