By Tang dynasty, xinjiang was under control, and China were able to went as far as to compete for tributary states with the Abbasid Caliphate.

End of Tang saw a period of disunity, as generals formerly under Tang army became warlords and formed their own kingdom. China proper was unified under Song but they were never really in position to take back xinjiang due to new nomadic/other threats from Tufan, the Khitans, xi xia, Jurchen Jin dynasty, and later on the mongols.

Well done. From what I've been reading, it doesn't seem like a major insurgency situation over there anyway. More like 'taming the wild frontier' kinda situation.
