I personally don't feel any such "competitor" will sell - I don't see people buying a smartphone that doesn't have Google Store. The gigantic ecosystem of apps they have can never truly be replicated by a Chinese copy.

Well if anyone at all can, it is China. But yes it will be a herculean task. And also google leaving out a huge country like China will also be huge hit to their revenues. And they really dont want to take a risk about what chinese tech companies can or cant. Already Huawei has created its own OS and working on its Gapps alternatives.

And that is why we keep having several bugs with these ROMs when we flash. Usually you will have camera, fingerprints, flashlight or some other sensors not working. I think DIY phones and software are the future.

You also need app developers to create apps for other platforms specially on HTML5 without too many bugs to deal with. That is the hardest part because Google and Apple pay big money to app developers. Without good apps, all you have is some basic features like chat, phone calls, browsers etc. If most apps work on cloud and browser, we are well set with DIY devices. A good ARM optimized Linux distro will suffice.
