Xiaomi becomes market leader in India

China Plus Published: 2018-07-07

As smartphone maker Xiaomi prepares for its initial public offering in Hong Kong, the company has now surpassed Samsung in the Indian market to become the market leader for smartphones in the country.

At this mobile phone store in Mumbai, Xiaomi smartphones have been flying off the shelves.

The Beijing headquartered brand has even overtaken Samsung to dominate the smartphone market in India.

Store owner Prashant Redekar says it's largely because of Xiaomi's value for money in a price conscious market.

"They are giving functions which other companies are not giving in low cost. They are giving 2GB RAM and 16GB memory in 7,000 rupees. Other companies are giving that function in 10,000 or 11,000 rupees."

Xiaomi smartphones surged to take a 31 per cent share of shipments in the country in the first three months of this year compared to just over 13 per cent in the same quarter last year, according to Hong Kong based Counterpoint Research.

The phone manufacturer is tapping a market where there are still large numbers who don't own a smartphone. But Chinese brands like Xiaomi, and Vivo and Oppo, mean more people can afford to buy these devices. India is now the second largest smartphone market after China.

And cut price data deals from India's telecom companies which are in fierce competition are also helping boost demand.

There's also tough competition in the phone sector, with Indian brands also making budget devices.

N Chandramouli the chief executive officer of research firm TRA in Mumbai, says Xiaomi will have to work hard to maintain the top position.

"There is no clear victor here. You've seen a Samsung like brand which is existing for so many years still suffer the consequences of a low or a high, every time it's a fight every day. I think unless they have a very clear cut brand strategy in India, there will be very few people who know which brand is Xiaomi's brand, meaning there's a Mi, there's a Redmi, there's a Xiaomi."

The company's Redmi and Mi smartphones are manufactured at six factories in India.

And Xiaomi says it wants to expand its presence in and set up production of goods ranging from TVs to t-shirts in India.

There are some who turn their noses up at budget brands, though.

"I usually tend to go for brands that have been there for a long time, so say to take names, would probably be a Samsung or an iPhone or something like that."

But with a population of 1.3 billion, Xiaomi is well aware of the huge opportunity to ring up sales in the country.

They make good phones at lower cost, Samsung started to make good phones at a budget too. I just got a Nokia 6.1 for my mom this summer.

Now please some one tell me that "Xiaomi " is an indian company started under great Modi G's made-in-india initiative. And also that red dragon ( China) has been completely boycotted in India.

Xiaomi aims to sell more than just smart phones. I guess, step by step, they will bring to the Indian market their wide variety of smart home/life appliances, including TV sets, cookers, music box, projectors, and others.

Xiaomi is more than a smart phone company although it is little knows outside China.

Xiaomi is readying for an IPO in HK.

That will significantly boost the company's value and ensure greater cash flow, R&D spending, etc.

I wish Xiaomi will become the Panasonic of China.
Mi only can survive in India (dont know why India like illegal copied Mi phone plus spyware ), other market is too hard specially under US's sanction and TPP nation dont buy cheap-illegal copied plus spyware CN phone, thats why Mi's share sink today

I should say Xiaomi is great. I own one, bought at the Taipe store. The problem is, Xiaomi still does not have brick and mortar stores in a majority of locations.

Besides, do not underestimate India market. That's about one sixth of humanity.

Same answer. Mi will collapse if keep selling phone wt little benefit and ppl dont buy $1,000 USD Mi phone like they buy $1,000 IphoneX and Samsung S.
----------
Bcs its so cheap, so Mi phone almost make no benefit compared to Apple, Samsung. And bcs it only get small benefit, so investor dont believe XiaoMi has good future specially undr US sanction now.

Thats why Mi's share sinked yesterday.

You are making false accusation, which is unethical and taints your reputation.

Only thing is that the IPO came under a new (stricter) IPO guidelines and in a very unpredictable global economic environment.

This does not mean much for the long term prospects of an innovative company like Xiaomi. It will climb the ladder and the early investors (probably lots of investors from Vietnam, too) will benefit.

Have you tried Xiaomi AI? It is excellent, and, with every update, getting smarter. Before judging, I advice you to try one.

Do you have Xiaomi store in Vietnam?

I told u that CN will be in chaos in 2023 due to US sanction and TPP ,every smart investors can see it, thats why they will not buy Mi's share or any CN phone IPO.

"a very unpredictable global economic environment." is CN chaos. If CN can survive after 2023, then maybe investors will buy Mi share:cool:

VN have Xiaomi shop, Xiaomi phone is OK, but only poor ppl buy Mi cheap phone while customer looking for 1,000USD phone will buy Iphone, Samsung instead of Mi flasg ship phone.
