Xi Jinping has taken over as leader of China, securing the Communist party's top spot and oversight of the military after a political transition upset by scandals that have added fuel to public demands for change as the country faces slower economic growth.

Xi's elevation to party general secretary and chairman of the commission that oversees the People's Liberation Army was announced in a dispatch by the state Xinhua news agency following a week-long party congress that underlined the communists' determination to remain firmly in power.

Xi will lead a new seven-member collective leadership of technocrats: Li Keqiang, the presumptive premier; vice-premier Zhang Dejiang; Shanghai party secretary Yu Zhengsheng; propaganda chief Liu Yunshan; vice-premier Wang Qishan; and Tianjin party secretary Zhang Gaoli.

The members of the new panel filed on to the stage at the Great Hall of the People and Xi addressed the gathered reporters.

The son of a party elder, and vice-president for the past five years, Xi will lead the world's second-largest economy amid increasingly vocal calls for economic and political reform including from within the 82 million member party itself.

At ease with colleagues, Xi takes over the party leadership from the stiff and technocratic Hu Jintao and is expected to assume the presidency in March.

Congratulations to the Chinese brothers and their great leader. I'm sure he has the courage and integrity to set China on the right track. For too long China has been a spectator as far as world events are concerned. It's time for China to take an active role.

I heard he will push for greater wealth distribution in the form of pensions and social/medical security. Good going....but expect that stash of 3 trillion to get eroded. those reforms are expensive as hell. Even if one might presume they wont be exacted in such detail as over here, the sheer number of population guarantees stellar amounts of funds required.
Anyhow, a painful but necessary step, which might prove in useful soon as China will face the inevitable peril of aging population. What's the retirement age in China now?

I really hope so, but not going to happen. The leaders are corrupted to the core. Even he really wants to, but he can't do much without approval from others.

You are right.The problem now begin to loom in China.And the social security department in China previously declared that it will launch a plan to extend the retirement age because of the forthcoming deficit of social security funding,it caused a huge stir in China.People and media both challenged the idea.Finally the department corrected itself due to social pressure. Even though the intractable problem is not solved yet in China as it isn't in other nations.

The retirement age in China seems now 60 for men,55 for women.I'm not sure but I think it's almost.

Let's hope that Xi is truly a great warrior because a lot depends on that. Iran, Pakistan, North Korea, Syria, Gaza, South China Sea, the Diyu island, Tibet, everywhere the warmongers are showing their venomous fangs!
