Xi cites Confucius as positive example for modern nation

You are quite right, he caused great damage to the Chinese traditional culture.

He actually destroyed entire family tombs, ordered the red guards to burn family scrolls that were hundreds, if not thousands of years old. Those can never, ever be recovered again. Mao destroyed the legacy of entire dynasties of Imperial China. Epochs that lasted thousands of years....!

Future history will define him as a sinner. He was also a scholar and has good talent, but in his later years and done triggered a disaster, really sad.

Rape is another thing, most abortions today are not because of rape, but because of other reasons, and it's one of the reasons modern society has a low birth rate.
I do believe men and women should be equal in law,but then again men and women are different, the men are strong, more independent, can be frightened by the pressure .The women are not,it's unfair for women to compete with men in the market, the real equality is men have their places in society, the women have their places, the women's places in house,in home,it's the real equality.

So women should not read, write or drive because it is useless outside the home. After all their place is in the home right? How can men and women be legally equal if they have different "roles"? What if someone wants a different role?

This is why I say you are the one that wants to take freedom away from others - you want society to pressure others to conform to what you think is the best, instead of allow people to decide for themselves what is the best.

It is bad, but only from an archaeological point of view. The dynasties and many bad traditions were holding China back. It was time to filter out the bad (being "humble" for instance - the current media definition on being humble means you have low self esteem and do not recognize your own strength. That is why Japan always claims to be the best at this or the greatest at that or the first, whatever - because it already recognized that being a "humble Asian" is just one of those stupid orientalist lies). Culture is fluid. Some cultural elements do not fit with the times. For example, Europeans no longer wear white wigs, believe in divine right to rule, etc.

I doubt anyone would possibly argue that ending discrimination against the poor, ending real torture of prisoners (such as 凌迟), ending feudal land ownership, establishing modern taxation systems, establishing modern science, etc. are bad. Yet someone here is arguing that a "small" government - that is, one that does not have modern taxation, science policy, etc - is good.

Read, write or drive has nothing to do with compete with men in market place, and I don't think the law should forbidden the women to compete with the men for jobs,my main point is we can develop a culture,in this culture, women think it's best for them to take care family rather than compete with men in the things they are not good at,education and media can play it's role in this.
And there is no discrimination against the poor or feudal land ownership in China, sorry, the so-called landlords were just richer farmers, they are not different with the mainstream farmers and they can become richer or poor in future,it's a normal thing in every country, those so-called landlords didn't have any special rights nor they own serfs like the real landlords of Russian and Europe. And for Mao's utopia,20-30 million farmers died of hunger in Great leap forward, again,in first time of China, the population decrease in peace era.Communism can never work, the large government will end in slavery

So you are saying that the media should tell people to do things rather than report facts and events with no bias. Ok.

We call this "brainwashing" and "propaganda" elsewhere. Apparently this is not the case when applied to you.

The landlords are not just richer farmers. The very act of landowning puts them in a position of power over tenant farmers that had no land of their own.

No one knows how many died in the Great Leap Forward. There are still bones being dug up from WW2 - why are there none from the Great Leap Forward? And even if there were that many - so what? Was it malice (like 花园口决堤事件)? Or was it the result of a misguided policy? And if it was a misguided policy, then it is still better than doing nothing. Man Qing and KMT allowed more wars to be fought on Chinese land. PRC is also the first era in which the Chinese military has become purely expeditionary and never fighting on Chinese land. PRC is the first era where China is directly competing with peer states across the world.

Know what small government looks like? Somalia. Know what big government looks like? United States.

Neither of us want westernization. You want traditional culture to come back fully. I want a uniquely Chinese modernity. I think that a retreat into tradition is cowardice and will never work - look at the state of countries today that are trying to regress back into purely traditional culture. I also don't want western modernity. I want Chinese modernity that uniquely combines the best of Chinese tradition with the useful parts of global culture. A modern culture is the prerequisite to growth. And you know, there's a few things you can never argue against: in the ROC and Qing, individual scientists that happened to Chinese could do well - but there was no such thing as Chinese science. Only in PRC era has there been actually Chinese science.

Example: Japan

Did not Japan bulldozed all its cultural relics in its march to modernization in the 18 hundreds ? What cultural relics are there is Japan today ?
Singapore did the same in the 80s. I was living in Singapore when many pre-war shop houses were bulldozed.

During the Meiji Restoration and subsequent modernization of Japan, the Emperor personally promulgated a dualism of Tradition with Modernity. There were no desecration of family tombs, temples, but rather the Meiji Emperor declared that Japan should be externally modern as the West, but internally grounded on Japanese Tradition and Culture.

I'm not a fan of KMT,this party in my opinion worse than CCP,however KMT was not as cruel as CCP treated the people,hm and their job in Taiwan not very bad
Somalia lacks a central government, government is necessary, small government not means no government. And Somalia has many warlords, they are small tyrants,as I point in earlier posts, many tyrants are worse than one tyrant,in fact,we can't say there were small governments in warlord control area, because those warlord control everything there

KMT treated the people far worse and far more cruelly. 花园口决堤事件 is one example where the KMT purposely killed 1 million peasants overnight to stall the Japanese army for a few days - a few days that turned out to be militarily useless. In Shanghai during the 1920's, you could find dead bodies on the street, but this disappeared instantly in 1950's. The life expectancy in 1930's, before the war, was 34 years of age. The life expectancy in 1950's was already 50 years, on-par with some European countries.

Many Taiwanese hate KMT, as well as CCP in the mainland too.

That is why many of them choose DPP and Japanese.
